Announcement Plans for SuMo and Beyond

So we're a week before the new fancy Pokemon game launches, and while a decent amount of you have heard about our plans, we haven't officially stated anything. So how exactly are we going to approach this new generation of our glorious turn-based luckfest strategy game? Well, there are a few things that I'll be covering here: Our ban list, the immediate plans we have, and our leadership.

So for the ban list, we're going with a whole new approach. We are going to be carrying over the ORAS ban list in its entirety. This includes the following:

Pokemon: Scyther, Sneasel, Tangela, Yanma, Swirlix, Gligar, Murkrow, Meditite, Misdreavus, Drifloon, all single-staged or evolved Pokemon, and any unevolved multi-stage Pokemon that is unavailable at Level 5.
Moves: Dragon Rage, Sonic Boom, Swagger
Abilities: Moody
Clauses: Species, Sleep, OHKO, Evasion

So why are we doing this? There are a few reasons. The first reason is that we're honestly tired of suspecting everything over and over again. We know that Sneasel, Tangela, Swirlix, Murkrow, etc. are going to be problems. It's a waste of time to go through that process again when we know what's going to happen. While previous tier leaders have had their reasons for establishing the system the way they did, this is simply how I, and others want to do it. I personally also wanted to have an established Ubers list Day 1, which can always come in handy (LC Ubers anyone????). So why carry over everything? Why not pick and choose? The answer there is consistency. We don't know exactly how the new metagame is going to fare so any selections we made other than all-or-nothing would have been pure theorymonning and that's not something we should be doing before we can actually play. This process also allows us to perform retests later on if enough of the community and council feels that it's justified (Yes people, we are open to doing retests this gen!).

The next reason we're doing this is because we're in SPL again this year, and because of this, we want our metagame to be as playable and acceptable as possible in the shortest amount of time, and with all of the new threats and mechanics being introduced this generation, there's no way we could fairly deal with everything while still dealing with the baggage. We'll be able to focus exclusively on the new threats and be able to provide you all with a great metagame much sooner.

So now that we have that out of the way, what's getting the boot? What could we possibly be looking at first? (Note: If avoiding SuMo spoilers skip the next two hide tabs!)

Specifically, we're going to be examining Eevium Z. For those of you that don't know what it does, it's an item that allows Eevee to use the move Extreme Evoboost, which gives all of its stats a +2 boost (excluding accuracy/evasion). Quite simply put, this is stupid. We will be heavily discussing and playtesting this as soon as the metagame is playable and within a couple of days we'll reach a verdict on whether or not we quickban it.

Besides what was posted above, we don't have any immediate plans to suspect anything. We'll see where the game takes us.

Next I'll be going over LC's leadership. Recently, Mambo took some time off to focus on his school work, and I wish him the best in those endeavours. He will be coming back for the new generation but will not be returning to his Moderator duties. While he will still be contributing to our community, it won't be in the same capacity as he did at his peak. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank Mambo for everything he has done for the community up to this point. His work has been highly appreciated.

We won't be promoting a new LC Moderator just yet, but when the time comes we will be sure to let you know. For our tier leaders...macle and I will be staying with you. With a new generation comes a whole new set of challenges, and either of us leaving would shake things up too much. From the first day onward, we will be here putting forth our strongest efforts to ensure that this community and this game are amazing.

Finally, I want to go on a personal note here. For the past few months I've been under various levels of stress. From dealing with depression and death, to moving across the world, leaving my friends behind in the process, it's been a rough year. I've done what I could do but it hasn't been easy. While we can overall consider everything that's been achieved a success, it's been a very rough path. I've been angry with all of you, and you've also been angry with me. I've said bad things about people and groups that I shouldn't have, mainly as methods with dealing with these frustrations, but I know it's not acceptable. I know that I've ruined opportunities for myself because of what I've said, and for all of that, I apologise. I know that simply saying sorry isn't going to fix everything, but it's a start. I want to approach the new generation with a clean and focused mind. I want to provide all of you with the most fair and enjoyable experience possible. Hopefully, we can all look back at the mistakes we've made and learn from them. We can also look back at the good times we've had and remember why it is we're all here. We're here to play Pokemon, socialise, and just enjoy ourselves. So let's do that. In the spirit of mons...

Love the fact that we're banning tons of stuff, just have a few questions about policy.

Will quick bans be decided by you and macle or by the council?
Will we continue using the same suspect process after considering quick bans?
If so, is there still going to be a council after doing quick bans? I missed the last suspect, but iirc they don't really do anything
When will we start retesting? After doing bans, right away, or just when the majority of the community wants to do retests?

Thanks for being awesome, super excited for Sun & Moon!

Great questions! I admittedly left out a bit of stuff concerning our council, so I'll make up for that now:

1) Quickbans will be discussed and voted on by the council. The decision of what is going to be quickbanned will be decided by macle and myself.

2) macle and I haven't come to a complete agreement on this yet but we may possibly be using the council exclusively for suspects this gen, as voting and discussion within the council will allow for a much smoother and quicker process. I have personally wanted to change the system for a while but didn't feel the need to do it yet.

3) Yes, the council will stay intact because of my previous statement.

4) The priority right now is to examine the new threats as thoroughly as possible so we have a proper understanding of what we've received. Once the metagame is at a point where there is no obvious suspect-worthy aspect, we will discuss the possibility of retests. Also, even if voting ends up being decided by council, we will welcome the community's input on potential retests (As long as your reasoning is acceptable).

Part of the reason I have not officially announced the council yet is for two reasons:

1) I thought the list of council members was public already. Apparently that's not the case. In the great words of chillindude829: my b

2) The council is not finalised. We are still considering adding more people to it, and people have also left the council since its reformation a few months ago. I'll make another post/thread about that sometime soon when I officially announce the council and our first mission.

So, I know we have discussed this before but I'd like you to just clarify this for me once and for all: How are we handling who is managing what threads? I understand that people who already manage very important threads actively will be able to continue, such as Fiend handling viability rankings, but about the smaller or less active threads suck as Cores and the Role Compendium, you said they will be given to trusted users who want them/ I just wanted to know if you plan to have a thread or just personally give threads to those who are interested (such as myself)

And seriously Quote. thanks for your hard work. <3

I have a few questions:
What are we planning on doing about Type: Null, are we just going to ban it outright?
Are we planning on starting C&C once the meta stabilizes?
If the council will be used exclusively for suspects this gen, will there be any way for people to get points for TC, or any community involvement in suspects in general?
How exactly will retests be handled this generation?

Thank you for the compliments. They all meant a lot to me. Seriously.

With regards to thread management, I'll have names to threads very soon (in the next couple of days). Once the game is officially released, I will instruct the designates to start these threads as needed, so more relaxed will start sooner than threads that require critical thought, because we need a better understand of metagame knowledge before we can start pumping out important information and analysis.

I'm not even sure if Type: Null is available at Level 5. If it is, don't expect it to be legal.

I'm not in charge of LC C&C, so this answer would be better answered by macle, but I would think that we would take at least a couple of months or so before starting C&C work.

Assuming we go by the system I proposed earlier. then TC would only be available to council voters and the Tier Leaders. However, community members are more than welcome to discuss the matter in threads that we'll have set up.

How will we handle retests? Simple, really. A suggestion will be brought to us by either the public (it would need generous support, not just one person that has the hots for the mon) with a solid argument for it, or from within the council, and then if we think it's legitimate enough to warrant further discussion we put it to an official examination and prepare ourselves so we can vote on it. In a way retests will be handled like any other suspect, except it would be for the opposite reasons a typical suspect happens.

First time actively been through a Smogon generation change so I have a few questions if you don't mind :)

Will this subforum be deleted/moved and a new Little Cup forum for gen 7, or will all content in this subforum will be deleted and replaced?

Also about the pre-banning of the original ORAS LC Banlist, would there be any chance that there will be an important factor in SuMo that makes a ORAS LC Uber Pokemon not too OP in SuMo? free murkrow jk

Regarding your answer to how3an's question, aside from the important threads started by the designated you've chosen, will the system of projects, tours, and other threads be the same as where you'll need a forum moderator's approval before posting. Or will there be a new management of making new threads in the subforum, as there will probably be multiple new projects and thread regarding SuMo LC.

Finally, my last question is regarding the LC main thread starters and council, I'm pretty sure this is the case, as are these people being selected of their experience and understanding of LC, or for other reasons that make them suffice. I don't really mean to go in-depth about this as this may be something only the staff discuss, so if it's best not to answer then it's totally fine but I just asked this out of clarification.

Thanks for all your hard work Quote! I'm pretty sure all of the Little Cup community can say the same, and it's going to be a fun ride going into SuMo LC as a community together. Thanks again, and have a good day :)

How many people will be in the council?
Still not entirely sure. If we don't add or remove anyone in the next week or two, it'll be 13 people.

From what I know, traditionally the subforums all get moved to Thread Cryonics to be preserved and new subforums are made.

Well there certainly could be. Any sort of mechanic change or metagame shift can cause a previously banned mon to come back. Vulpix, Scraggy, and Carvanha are all banned in Gen 5 LC but are legal now because of different changes.

The system will remain the same. You will still need to approach either macle or I if you want to post a new thread. The reason I'm organising and assigning some of these threads now is because I want them to be ready when I want to see them posted, in addition to them being important projects.

Council members are chosen based off of their metagame knowledge and experience. I don't expect everyone on the council to be a great player (Look at me, I'm the tier leader ffs) but those that can present strong arguments and properly back them up are considered. The people we have on our council are all respected community members and I can say that they all know what they're talking about.

Again, I highly appreciate all of the compliments. They really do help me get through the tough times.

So will LC Ubers be a real thing? Also LC UU is that going to be a thing again? I would much like to give it another shot even though it did fall into obscurity.

are there plans for LC OMs to be a thing like Extended / Stabmons / AAA

also LC Dubs and maybe LC Randbats?

also i do like this keep shit banned shit, really gives us a chance to not hav eto muddy through guessing how broken shit is but retesting will be painful bc Yanma/Missy arguments are the most sometimes.

also rip Type:Null

I'm hoping that LC Ubers can be established in some way. I want a way for all of those mons to still be usable, but I don't want us clinging to some "tangma" when it's a lot easier to just properly shape together an Ubers meta. Also yes, I want LC UU to exist again. I would like to see it be worked on a bit earlier in comparison to last time so then maybe people will be more willing to give it a shot.

We don't have anything planned for LC OMs but I'm more than welcome to seeing them happen. The major snag that we ended up hitting them them and LC UU is that it could possibly draw attention away from the standard LC metagame and that was apparently something we shouldn't encourage. However, I see it as simply another way of enjoying what we have offered to us. If you don't enjoy the standard LC metagame, but you enjoy LC UU or a particular OM, then abolishing that metagame won't magically drag you back to LC. You'll just find something else to do. I want our playerbase to simply enjoy themselves, whether it means its through our official standard metagame or through UU/an OM. LC is going to have a relatively large amount of representation regardless, so I'm not worried about the expansion of the other metas.

I personally strongly disliked ORAS LC Dubs, but I'm willing to give it another chance. A new metagame can hopefully bring new and positive changes. As for LC randbats, I wanted that to be done this gen but it didn't happen because Caledrith left for his mission, but I'm going to make sure LC Randbats is playable for SuMo. It'll take a while to happen, but I promise it'll happen.

I agree that the incessant FREE YANMA/FREE MISSY protests are annoying, but at least these players are saying something. Who knows? Maybe one of those mons will be legal in SuMo.

Yeah rip Type: Null. It's apparently only available at Level 40, so it's looking like it won't be LC legal.

Maybe I am just a nostalgic old fuck, but I have been with Little Cup long before it was an official part of Smogon. I have not been nearly as consistently active as I was in the past because life happened and I started playing more games, but I have been watching things change and browsing the forum and reading the PS! chat and occasionally battling on random alts (especially during classes.) With that being said, I don't think I could have ever imagined Little Cup in the place it is now back when we first came onto Smogon. The community has evolved so much and gained so much more respect over the years, which I know might be hard to believe at times but trust me when I say its true. I think Gen VI was an excellent generation for the tier and that is due in large part to the contributions of players, writers and tier leaders (certainly not because of those damn 17 Speed ties.) The resources for new players and accessible and always improving, and dedicated players are getting better and better. My only hope is that the community continues to accept contributions from new players and innovators and continue to cultivate the skill, knowledge and ambition of people attempting to learn. I think the decisions made and presented in this thread are definitely the best course for Little Cup to expand and progress, even if it means giving up my beloved Yanma to the realm of LC Ubers. It's weird to see yet another generation of Little Cup just around the corner, but I look forward to experimenting in new evolving metagame just over the horizon.

Funbot28

Banned deucer.
While I totally agree that stupid mons like Scyther, Gligar, Sneasel, Tangela, and Swirlix deserve to remain banned come SuMo LC, because lets face it no matter what transition we get these mons will always be quite dumb. I do have to disagree however with leaving more "controversial" bans such as Drifloon, Meditite, Misadreavus, and Murkrow. I would much rather we leave them unbanned come Gen 7 and let the public test and see whether or not they are actually broken due to some mechanic changes (mainly the burn recoil nerf for Drifloon and the Sucker Punch nerf for Murkrow) instead of the council deciding what should be resuspected one at a time. Having multiple suspects should not be deemed "tedious" as it actually helps us constitute what truly is broken in SuMo LC while making the less amount of assumptions as possible.

Also please give LC Ubers a ladder lol, it should have gotten one over LC UU for a variety of reasons :/

I think you are forgetting that we need a stable meta for SPL to help us essentially show off so we can get as many users as possible so we can grow as a community and a tier. Releasing mons that have already been deemed OP in the past is simply to risky for us as it absolutely essential that we have a stable meta to start with so we may attract new users early. Yes, it could result in an optimal meta faster, but again we need to look as good as possible from day 1.

I hope you understand, but if you don't, Quote could certainly explain better than I if need be.

This is by no means official or whatever, but it is a general response to funbot28 from someone who plays/ed a lot of LC and was part of the council for some of this gen.

As the goal for SuMo is to get the meta into a competitive state asap, I find that unbanning the already banned Pokemon conflicts with this as a whole, and retesting the borderline mons that are banned is more aligned with this general goal. Retesting the controversial Pokemon allows us to focus on the issues SuMo brings first, and then we can make the moves to reintroduce these Pokemon when they're metagame influences aren't potentially distorted or dwarfed by something else in the tier. And personally I don't think most of the banned Pokemon should be retested, with only the ghosts having cases in their favor.

Murkrow's issue is it had a fuck ton of attack, two great offensive STABs, and a movepool to let it do whatever it wants. I don't think anyone who played lc competently thought it was healthy, not broken, or otherwise fine to be in LC. Its arguable best set didn't even use Sucker Punch either, and that was still very effective and great at getting around methods of handling it. Yes Sucker Punch being weaker is bad for Murkrow, but that doesn't make it NOT broken from all I've seen of the SuMo leaks. I don't think Murkrow should really be looked at unless the metagame turns out to be rather offensive, and even then I don't think it'll be a great idea. It's been a persistently broken Pokemon in LC.

As for Drifloon, that will probably be looked at, but I feel that it is will be more pressing to ban ridiculous issues in the metagame first, then retesting the balloon. The goal the council has going into SuMo is to get rid of broken Pokemon and do so in a manner that engenders a metagame where nothing is head-and-shoulders better than everything else. Unbanning Pokemon who only were mildly nerfed makes this process much longer, and is we aren't really sure how they would act in the metagame anyway. With a retest Drifloon can be specifically examined, and it helps us not have to really look at it before we are ready too. Drifloon is a fringe case on how it should be handled, but generally it seems that the more efficient way of handling the suspect process for this generation would be to retest it later on.

Misdreavus and Meditite are only really considered not broken by a few people, and even those few generally admit that it isn't a healthy thing in the metagame. Depending on mechanics and how everything pans out these will also be considered, though Meditite appears to honestly not really change as a whole. Misdreavus may or may not fundamentally influence the metagame in a different way in SuMo than it did in XY, but allowing it to be free from the get-go doesn't really make much sense as it still has its good bulk, good power, good move pool, and its counters are somewhat nerfed by Sucker Punch. As it stands, I think Missy is far more fitting of a retest due to our goal of making LC a good meta as quickly as possible, and the leaks don't reveal much that's in favor of Missy not being broken as it was.

With that all said, I plan on being loud about getting retests done once we "handle" (can't think of a better word) the initial metagame, and if this is something you care about you really should voice your support for the notion too.

Also please give LC Ubers a ladder lol, it should have gotten one over LC UU for a variety of reasons :/
I don't think either should have ever had a ladder, though a challenge option for LC Ubers would be so much better than one for LC UU. LC UU blows

If we're going back to council votes, can we at least go back to the people deciding the suspect like we used to do? This would allow for the reasonable possibility of things being retested when the playerbase as a majority wants to retest them (if it's getting the most votes in that system then that should be enough support) while still allowing for players who actively participate in the tier to have the possibility of TC. Yeah TC isn't too important, but at the same time I'd like to hear why this system wouldn't be ok at least.

Will we be dividing into prebank and pokebank LC like we did at the beginning of this gen?

I might not always agree with you Quote (LC Dubs is fun >:( don't be so mean) but I respect what you've done for LC and look forward to another gen with you and our omnipresent leader Macle guiding us forward into gen 7.

We currently have 13 people on council. If we add too many people it'll slow the process down which goes against what we're trying to do.

You see, I'm actually not a fan of that system, because we either know something needs to be suspected and we're just letting the people do it for us (kinda like when your parent takes you to a store and lets you make the purchase even though it's with their money and they're goading you on), or we pressure you into making a decision just because the option is there. While we're open to taking suggestions, suspects should ultimately be handled by the council. That's why we chose them. Besides, players can still actively participate in the tier even if they aren't able to vote on matters. Discussion topics will be open to allow players to debate on the suspect and possibly help raise points to council members that they may not have considered. On top of that, well-written and thought out posts in those threads can contribute to badges, as good posts in suspect discussions are meant to be informative and helpful to other users.

While I would love to explore the Alola-specific metagame, we only have approximately 2 months before Pokebank is compatible with the games, and given the datamined information we have, it's smarter to just play the postbank meta. RIP Alola LC.

As always, thanks for the compliments. We'll do our best to make Gen 7 as enjoyable as possible.

Hopefully I'm in the right spot, but when do you think that Gen 7 LC will be up so we can start playing? Also please let LC Ubers be a thing. It sounds like so much fun

Question: Will Non-Schooled Wishiwashi be available in LC? It's ability is for all intents and purposes a level-based evolution, and at level 5 it wouldn't have access to it's ability, so would it be possible for it to be legal?

I don't know if it's even worthwhile but it's a borderline case I've been curious about since the reveal of how it's ability worked.

No, it doesn't actually evolve, so it isn't legal.
