Our first Pokemon looking for a friend this cycle is..

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
- Discharge
- Roost
- Heat Wave
- Defog

Zapdos has been generally consistent throughout the generation as a solid Ground type check and as a defogger. It only benefitted from Zygarde's departure and is still quite the defogger. It is generally seen on Bulky Offense, Balance, and Stall builds, and is a great check to metagame threats such as Kartana and Hawlucha.

Submissions are due next Thursday. Good luck!

Moltres @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 208 HP / 60 Def / 240 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Roost
- Defog
- Flamethrower

Aside from being the better birds competitively (125 SpA Arti never happened), Moltres and Zapdos form a double Defog core that is immensely frustrating to actually break. Alongside Mega Sableye, these three neuter any attempt to play the hazard game thanks to Pressure PP stalling a lot of moves Stealth Rockers carry. Anyway, Moltres can stall out TTar’s Stone Edge, wall Heatran and take on Mawile for Zapdos, while Zapdos checks Lucha, stalls Lando’s Edge PP, and takes pressure (heh) off of Moltres to check Kart, especially if Rocks are up.

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Def / 12 SpA / 40 SpD / 192 Spe
Calm Nature
- Defog / Nature's Madness
- Moonblast
- Scald
- Taunt

Tapu Fini forms a nice core with Zapdos: Fini can cover Stealth Rock users that Zapdos struggles with like Heatran, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Diancie, while Zapdos can do well against Ferrothorn and Landorus-T. In particular, the core is great at pressuring Toxapex. Aside from that, Tapu Fini can check Ground-types like Gastrodon, Mega Charizard X, Ash-Greninja. Zapdos can cover Grass-types for Fini. However, they are rather weak to Electric-types, may get overwhelmed by Magearna, and is prone to being walled by Chansey.

Tangrowth @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power Ice
- Earthquake

Tangrowth enjoys Zapdos checking Tornadus-T, while in return it can deal some real damage to troublesome for Zapdos rockers like Mega Tyranitar and Heatran (on the switch).

Excadrill @ Normalium Z
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Giga Impact

Normally, Excadrill has a very difficult time giving up Rapid Spin, and it finds itself walled by a lot of common threats like Rotom-W, Zapdos, and others, so having a reliable Defog user in Zapdos as a teammate frees up an additional slot that allows it to run Z-Giga Impact, OHKOing both Rotom-W and Zapdos at +2. Besides freeing up Excadrill's moveset, this Zapdos is also a solid partner for Excadrill because it checks mons that irritate the shit out of Exca like non-Z Rock Lando, Kartana, Steela, etc. and tends to fit very well onto the sand balance teams that Excadrill is traditionally featured on.

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 188 SpD / 72 Spe
Careful Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Iron Head
- Body Slam / U-Turn

Jirachi is a great partner for Zapdos, especially on Stall and fat Balance builds.
It can handle mons that threaten Zapdos like Lele, Magearna and Kyurem-B, and passing wishes to keep Zapdos healthy and less forced to click Roost to check things that checks Jirachi.
On the other hand, Zapdos defogs Spikes away, which puts great pressure on Jirachi, while checking some things that Jirachi cant like LandorusT lacking rock-type moves, Knock Off Mega Scizor, celesteela and rare things like (M)-gyarados and other threats.

For the most part, Fini can screw over Chansey by Taunting it and clicking Natures madness into range of Moonblast. but besides that, it's ok.

Get votes in by Sunday. I'm also thinking about adding a discussion phase for you all to, well, discuss the submissions. Let me know what you all think about that as well, if you don't mind.

drill.

as for duscussion phase, i guess combining it w submissions phase would be better cuz it takes less time than making 2 separate phases. not sure if the discussion phase is that needed here, however.

Voting fini because it gives you somebody versatility alongside zap, beating a lot of foggers that annoy you and can let you drop fog for ice sometimes

With regards to a discussion phase just let people do it during voting because you’ll probably get like 2 posts max during a discussion phase

Vote: Tapu Fini

Id vote for drill bc it’s the most unique but practically speaking fini is a “better” partner.

Dedicated discussion phases on these projects are always graveyards so there’s no point. Not to mention that there isn’t really anything to “discuss” unless someone posts a partner that’s portrayed as much better than it is in practice or smth.

Alright, that rounds of this cycle! Congrats to Mannat for winning with his Excadrill submission. Archive will be updated with your submission ASAP. With that aside, your next contestant you need to find a friend for is...

Garchomp-Mega @ Garchompite
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock

Mega Garchomp was once looked upon as this generation's hot garbage. However, things have been looking a lot brighter for it as of recently, as many players are realizing it's capabilities, and it is slowly proving itself to be a fearsome Wallbreaker, Stealth Rocker, and a powerful cleaner under Sand, and in general, a great pokemon with alot of potential. Now, what's it's ideal match?

Submissions are due Thursday. Good luck.

Also thanks for the tips on the potential discussion phase. That probably won't happen, but do feel free to discuss other's submissions in your votes, while being civil at least please!

Greninja-Ash @ Choice Specs
Ability: Battle Bond
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Dark Pulse
- Water Shuriken
- Spikes

Ash Greninja makes for a fantastic partner with this Garchomp thanks to the fact it lays Spikes alongside Garchomp’s rocks, making it even more difficult to switch into them than it already is while supplying priority and a high natural speed to make for Garchomp’s lack of Speed. And Garchomp supports Ash Greninja well thanks to Mega Garchomp wearing down and killing the Pokemon Ash Greninja hates like Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini, Assault Vest Magearna, Ferrothorn and Toxapex. Ash Greninja even forces these Pokemon in for Mega Garchomp to abuse.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 24 Def / 232 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball / Thunder Wave
- Power Whip

Ferro and Chomp form a nice defensive Dragon/Steel core with some offensive presence. Ferrothorn sets Spikes (which its free to run thanks to Chomp running Rocks), handles Ash-Greninja, chips foes with Leech and can slow down opposing Pokemon with Thunder Wave (which is nice since Chomp is running Mild). Mean while, Chomp is an incredible Heatran answer and appreciates Ferrothorn baiting as many Fire-types as it does. In addition, Tapu Koko has a hard time getting through this core, and they beat almost every remover/hazard preventer in the tier.

Tornadus sprite from Black 2 & White 2

Tornadus-Therian @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Defog

Torn is something that has amazing synergy with like, 90% of the tier. For Mega Chomp, it appreciates the utility and offensive presence Tornadus brings. Torn can safely U-Turn off of typical Torn switch-ins like Heatran, Magearna, and Toxapex to bring in Chomp against them to punish. Offensive Torn, in particular, has good synergy with Chomp, as they can overwhelm mutual checks like Celesteela, Rotom-W, and Zapdos. Chomp can lure them with its strong special attacks while Torn helps put them in range of these attacks (which is especially useful for Zapdos to avoid it Roosting on the Draco Meteor and forcing Chomp out). Once the opposing Flying-resist is removed or severely weakened, Torn is free to mindlessly spam Hurricane to its heart's content.

Kartana @ Choice Band
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off
- Sacred Sword
- Smart Strike

Kartana appreciates how Mega Garchomp does lure shit like Celesteela and Zapdos and smashes them. Tbh any Kartana set could work with Mega Garchomp, Band is just an example.

Tyranitar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 224 HP / 32 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rock Slide
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Earthquake

Tyranitar provides Mega Garchomp with sand, allowing Chomp's Earthquakes to hit even harder. For example, Earthquake goes from only having a 37.5% chance to OHKO AV Magearna after Stealth Rock, to being a guaranteed OHKO even without Rocks. Or having a 50% chance to OHKO Tapu Koko through its Shuca Berry after Rocks.

Hippowdon @ Smooth Rock / Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Whirlwind
- Slack Off

See TTar, but stupidly physically defensive rather than stupidly specially defensive. MegaChomp running Stealth Rock frees up Hippo to run both Toxic and Whirlwind, and in return, Hippo can opt to give up Lefties for Smooth Rock (Smooth Rock TTar is dog's arse, please don't use it).

Reserving Sand Rush Excadrill

Excadrill @ Steelium Z
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin

Assuming I'm allowed to assume both these pair on a sand team, using which ever of the 3 setters and sets you want, M.Garchomp makes a really nice offensive pairing with Excadrill in sand. It has the ability to lure/surprise and weaken many of Excadrills most important checks, being able to smack LandoT and Rotom-W on the special side with Draco and heavily dent Celesteela, M.Scizor and Helmet Tangrowth with Fire Blast, combined with a strong neutral in Sand Force boosted Eq, M.Chomp can quickly wear down the opposing team into range of Exca. M.Chomp can even take on Fire types that threaten Excadrill out of sand, being a solid resist while in turn Excardill is a nice Fairy check as well as being able to absorb a few Dragon or Ice moves. Excardill is also handy in providing Rapid Spin support, meaning that Rocks won't need to be put up as often, relieving some of the pressures on M.Chomp.
