OU ORAS OU Victim of the Week: Week 9 - Thundurus-I | Voting Phase

Check: Serperior (Honestly a tough one to decide, both Rotom-W and Serp are very good rn)
Counter: Mega Venusaur
I think Venu is a safer pick just because when you face Azu, you never know what set it'll be unless you see the damage roll or you Knock Off its item.
If you switch in Quagsire into Azumarill thinking its Belly Drum, and it ends up being CB, then you just get 2HKO'd by Play Rough. Venu avoids this problem all together since it can deal with both variants. Although its recovery options aren't as good as Amoonguss, you can still fit it on a wider variety of teams, not to mention it has good synergy with mons like Talonflame and Zapdos which are good in this meta.

Alakazam-Mega @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Encore / Protect

A very fast and offensive threat with Magic Guard and a spoonful of tricks up it's sleeves such as Encore, Calm Mind and Hidden Power Fire.
Here comes Mega Alakazam with an insanely high 150 Base speed stat making it one of the few Pokémon capable of revenge killing likes of Mega Lopunny and other fast threats in the tier without the need of a choice scarf. And with a ginormous Special Attack stat of 175, making this pokemon a very hard to switch into threat in the ORAS metagame. Adding on Trace allowing Alakazam-Mega to copy opposing target's abilities such as Regenerator, Natural Cure and Sand Rush making this Pokémon even harder to deal with.

Let's see what kind of checks and counters can you come up with to stomach it's hits.

@ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Def / 160 SpD / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- U-turn
- Roost
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit

It is a very good check to mega alakazam, as it can get a free switch on psychic or shadow ball or be pivoted in and threaten it out with u-turn or trap it with pursuit to remove it from the game. Even if mega-scizor predicts wrong and it stays in on the pursuit it now has to fear the Bullet punch and has to get another 50/50 correct.

0 Atk Technician Scizor-Mega switching boosted Pursuit (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 350-412 (139.4 - 164.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Scizor-Mega U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 306-362 (121.9 - 144.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 248 HP / 160 SpD Scizor-Mega: 78-93 (22.7 - 27.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 160 SpD Scizor-Mega: 94-111 (27.4 - 32.3%) -- 74.2% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 160 SpD Scizor-Mega: 140-165 (40.8 - 48.1%) -- 64.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Garfield (Landorus-Therian) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 208 Atk / 68 Def / 232 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Knock Off

Ok, so. I'm going to be honest with you. M-zam technically 2hkos the entire metagame, and very few things can outspeed or pick it off with priority reliably without prior chip, so I decided to go with old faithful - Garfield.

Garfield can take exactly 1 stab psychic and revenge kill it as shown in these calcs

252 SpA Alakazam Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 183-216 (57.3 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

208 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam: 322-381 (128.2 - 151.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Although, this should go without saying that hp ice will make Garfield drop harder than a Monday Diet. There isn't too much more to say here other than its garfield. Dude performs great game in and game out, good scarfer, intimidate shuffling, knock off, momentum. Good mon.

Check
Best Shiny (Metagross-Mega) @ Metagrossite
Ability: Tough Claws
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit
- Zen Headbutt

Lives a shadow ball so can pursuit and pursuit into bullet punch has a high chance of 2khoing

252 Atk Metagross Pursuit (40 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam-Mega: 130-154 (51.7 - 61.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Metagross Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam-Mega: 97-115 (38.6 - 45.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Metagross: 238-282 (79 - 93.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Check:

Mega Aerodactyl
Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Unnerve / Pressure
EVs: 168 HP / 124 Atk / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Aerial Ace
- Stone Edge / Aqua Tail
- Roost

Aerodactyl is an underrated mon that has the unique role of being a Pursuit trapper and Revenge killer at the same time. Although Aerodactyl speed-ties with Alakazam, it cannot OHKO Aerodactyl even with a round of Stealth Rock damage. However, Aero has a good chance of OHKOing Alakazam with it's STABs. Most often what happens in the exchange is that Alakazam switches out, and that allows you to Pursuit and remove it.

Although taking Rocks damage is a nuisance, Aerodactyl's bulk should not be underestimated. It is one of the few Pokemon in the metagame that can easily take on +1 Volcarona and OHKO it without issue. It can also OHKO or force out many of the dominant forces in the tier at the moment such as Excadrill, Lopunny, Serperior, and Tornadus-Therian.

While Aerodactyl has some trouble breaking through bulkier teams, it can pair well with other mons like Ferrothorn or Cofagrigus that can chip teams down with hazards and status, paving the way for Aerodactyl to clean.

Calcs:
Vs Alakazam
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 128 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 190-225 (57 - 67.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Aerodactyl-Mega Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 238-282 (94.8 - 112.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Tough Claws Aerodactyl-Mega switching boosted Pursuit (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 332-392 (132.2 - 156.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Defensive Calcs
Vs +1 Volcarona
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 128 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 144-169 (43.2 - 50.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 128 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 132-156 (39.6 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Keep in mind it will take even less damage from these mons if paired with a Sand setter like Hippowdon.

scizor is the best counter for sure not being weak to shadow ball and having recovery in roost helps
and not risking a speed tie is good.
ps: mega dactyl does not kill with stone edge and pursuit(if u don't switch out)
so i am gonna be voting scizor

TLDR - my vote goes to scizor as the check

Honestly, there's no real good check to m-zam. But I do want to give a major shoutout to Anvil Head for his m-aero suggestion, the calcs really caught me off guard, to me it looks like a pretty good utility mon that can act as a secondary check/fast clean-up poke in the lategame. Scizor isn't /as/ good even as a check b/c you can easily trap it e.g. and pursuit isn't generally a very common move, you'd rather have u-turn and the likes. I'm still going to advertise m-aero because that looks like a real fun pick to build with as an anti-meta pick

Check: Landorus-T
Ithi makes a good point, the scariest thing about Zam is that last slot can literally be anything, but this case specifically for Encore Zam, Scizor makes a decent check, though it is susceptible to being trapped by Magnezone and being chipped down by hazards. Scarf mons like Landorus-T and Rotom-W are not only great versus Mega Alakazam, but they can also check a variety of fast mons such as Mega Metagross, Thundurus, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Manectric. Landorus-T in particular, always threatens an OHKO vs Mega Alakazam and does not need to preserve health in order to check it.

Congrats to HydreigonTheChild for winning this week with Mega Scizor! Your submissions will be added to the Hall of Fame! Onto week 8 of ORAS OU Victim of the week with our next submission: Volcarona.

Submissions Phase

Volcarona @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body / Swarm
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Substitute
- Fiery Dance

Volcarona @ Life Orb / Lum Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 32 HP / 108 Def / 216 SpA / 152 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 SpD
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Ground]

"When volcanic ash darkened the atmosphere, it is said that Volcarona's fire provided a replacement for the sun." - Alpha Sapphire pokedex entry.
Much like the pokdex entry, it's a fiery beast capable of reverse sweeping entire teams if the right conditions are met.

This week I thought I'd make things interesting presenting 2 of the most common sets currently used in ORAS featuring: Sub Lefties Volcarona and Life Orb Wall breaker Volcarona.
The first set uses substitute to shield Volcarona from status such as T-wave from Clefable, and possible revenge killing opportunities.
While, the second set is utilised to break down common answers to Volcarona, such as Heatran with HP Ground and punish bulky waters with Giga Drain.

Let's see what kind of checks and counters you guys can come up with this time! Good luck and most importantly, have fun! ^^

Deadline: 23rd of March

Aerodactyl is not as pressured by Rocks and has recovery in the form of Roost. Aerodactyl can also OHKO or force out many of the dominant forces in the tier at the moment such as Excadrill, Lopunny, Serperior, and Tornadus-Therian.

Talonflame @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

Talonflame has a abillity called Gale wings, it allowes talonflame to have +1 priority on flying type moves
which mean that talonflame always counters a volcarona

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen6ou-1531963890

here is a replay, we wanted to show you that it doesnt matter how much speed volcarona gets, it always dies to a talonflame.

252+ Atk Life Orb Gale Wings Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Volcarona: 385-455 (102.9 - 121.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

^ Bold volcarona

252+ Atk Life Orb Gale Wings Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0+ Def Volcarona: 530-624 (170.4 - 200.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

IVs: 0 Atk

Follows rule no1 of ORAS: Get those rocks up
only HP ground volc can kill, but it needs to pop balloon first, which means you can get a toxic off, and +1 hp ground doest kill either, so you also get the rocks up.

+1 252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 252 HP / 212+ SpD Heatran: 292-344 (75.6 - 89.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
