A strong core is one of the single most valuable things to form when creating a new team. Cores are typically made up of a group of Pokémon that, when used together, work excellently toward accomplishing a specific goal, and any good player uses them, intentionally or not. The majority of cores have varying characteristics that allow them to triumph in different areas, and depending on your team, cores can be built to succeed offensively or defensively. An offensive core is a group of Pokémon that are both focused towards and designed to enable the team to break through most other team styles while being balanced for general play. A defensive core is a group of Pokémon chosen to give a team a solid set of resistances and the ability to switch into many of the common and threatening attacks in the metagame, allowing it to stick around long enough to win the match. Overall, cores function as a fantastic base or starting point for a wide range of teams and they are commonly used while teambuilding to achieve a specific goal.

:altaria-mega:Posting Guidelines
  • Any person can post a core in this thread. The cores are broken down into four categories: offensive cores, balanced cores, defensive cores, and weather cores. When posting your core, please make sure to state which one of these categories your core falls under.
  • Although the way your core works may be obvious to you, this may not be the case for others. As such, when posting a core, please make sure to explain how the core operates and any other details you think are important to include. These explanations do not have to be long.
  • Here are some things you may like to include when explaining your core:
    • Offensive Core: Should your core be an offensive one, such as Mega Manectric + Scizor, you could explain how those two Pokemon work together to break down their similar checks and any other synergistic traits. You could also mention any weaknesses the core has and any additional partners that you believe can work well with the core.
      • Here is a good example from the ORAS OU version.
    • Defensive Core: Should your core be defensive, such as Hippowdon + Skarmory, you could explain their typing synergy allows them to cover problematic Pokemon for one another, or any other synergistic attributes you feel are relevant. You could also mention any weaknesses the core has and any additional partners that you believe can work well with the core.
      • Here is a good example from the ORAS OU version.
  • This goes without saying, but please make sure that your post includes the sets your core is using. In addition, try to include an explanation of any EV spreads deviating from the standard 252 / 252 when needed. Replays are also very helpful and highly encouraged when posting cores.
  • Please do not post a core that has more than 3 Pokemon because cores bigger than this can restrict building immensely.
  • Please be respectful of the cores people post in this thread. If someone posts a core that you think is ineffective or just plain bad, there is no need to jump at their throats. With that said, constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged - simply be nice!
:urshifu:Core Selection Process
  • I will carefully monitor the cores posted in this thread. When the time comes, I will evaluate the posted cores and decide on which ones will be featured in the archive.
  • While the selection of good cores can often be subjective, I will also take into consideration a variety of aspects before deciding which cores are featured in the archive. This includes quality of explanation, general effectiveness of the core in the current metagame, and so on.
  • When I decide which cores will be featured in the archive, I will also try to announce them and provide brief explanations behind why certain cores were selected and why others weren't. This feedback can potentially help give people a clearer picture of what we are looking for.
    • Additionally, If a core is originally rejected from the archive, I can definitely provide some tips on how a set or spread can be tweaked so the core meets the standards we look for.
  • Just like with anyone else who posts a core, please feel free to bring up any concerns you might have with our posts and/or the cores we select! However, please be sure to be polite, and if it is a simple question/concern, feel free to PM me directly.

To get this thread started on a higher note, I'll leave a few more personal cores that I've been liking recently

+

One of my favorite pairings in the current meta. To me, the combination of Roserade + Rhyperior forms arguably the best hazard stacking core on offensive teams right now, as Roserade can easily switch into and Spike against Defog Rotom-Wash that would otherwise be difficult or Rhyperior to keep up Rocks against, while Rhyperior can do the same against Flying-types that would trouble Roserade, such as Salamence or Moltres. Their offensive potential combined with defensive synergy also gives them many opportunities to switch in and set hazards against other miscellaneous Pokemon that they can force out, which is huge for allowing their teammates to keep up the pressure late-game.

+

We've seen a huge resurgence of SubToxic Aegislash in the recent tournament lately, and Volcanion shines as a wallbreaker that can easily find entry points against the majority of Pokemon used to switch into it, such as Heal Bell + Flamethrower Mega Altaria and specially defensive Scizor. Beyond this, these two also have incredible type synergy that allows them to reliably cover each other's weaknesses, with Aegislash checking faster offensive threats like Salamence and Nihilego and exploiting other Waters like Slowking and Rotom-Wash that would otherwise threaten Volcanion in return.

+ +

Mega Steelix compresses a Nihilego check that can also absorb Knock Offs, which Nasty Plot Rotom-Heat appreciates being able to fall back on. It also has a tendency to lure in and weaken opposing Grounds with Toxic, which makes it easier for Rotom to break past them. Amoonguss completes this core with a failsafe option against offensive Waters that can bring in Flying-types for Rotom.

Urshifu is mainly checked by stuff such as Amoonguss, Tangrowth, Altaria-Mega, Salamence, and Slowking, most of which don’t want to take hefty hurricanes (with the exception of Slowking) and can be stopped from healing off the damage Urshifu puts onto them via Tornadus’ taunt or can be crippled through its knock off. Mega-Pidgeot is an option if you want more speed and power along with not risking misses but at the cost of priority taunt knock off and not being able to hold Heavy Duty Boots. These two also appreciate shifu taking care of their walls such as Nihilego, Rhyperior, Hippowdon, Rotom-Heat, and chunking the likes of Rotom-Wash and Slowking with Close Combat and U-Turn respectively (they share Slowking as a check so they tend to be able to overwhelm it).

Now it wouldn’t be an NDUU cores compendium without the trusty Gen 5 volt turn core of Rotom-Wash + Scizor + breaker / hazard setter. Scizor and Rotom-Wash both have one weakness (very similar to the common Scizor + Swampert core) and both cover each others weakness, Scizor 4x resisting grass and Rotom handling fire types such as Moltres, Infernape, and Chandelure fairly well. This core generates a ton of momentum but sometimes can fail to use that effectively, which is where the 3rd mon comes in, Nihilego, Roserade, and Nidoking are the best options imo due to the fact Scizor / Rotom-Wash drag in mons such as Moltres, Rotom-Heat, Rotom-Wash, Amoonguss, Tangrowth, Altaria-Mega, Gastrodon, Swampert, Salamence, and many more. If you look through the list of those mons you will notice a lot of them can be threatened by one if not all of the mons shown above with all of them also coming with the benefit of being able to potentially set hazards helping to capitalize on the many switches this core forces.

A low tier duo that can be quite threatning if played correctly. Mega Sceptile is great agaisnt offense thanks to its overkill speed tier that outruns even Zeraora and the typing alongside Lightning Rod allows it to abuse Rotom-Wash better than any other pokemon in the tier, threatning almost every water type, Zeraora, Salamence as well as scouting attempts at being revenged by Scarf Mienshao and sometimes Scarf Zarude makes it a pretty nice pick. Unfortunately it struggles with certain Bulky Steel types like Celesteela or Aegislash and other walls like Amoonguss, Mega Altaria, Tangrowth, Reuniclus and Galarian-Slowbro. This is where Sneasel comes in, it threatens out both Grasses and Mega Altaria and can also trap the Psychics to leave Mega Sceptile free, the Steels don't like to switch into a Knock Off and non-shield Aegislash fears Pursuit. In return, Mega Sceptile can chip or force out Cobalion, Skarmory, Scizor, Mega Aggron or Urshifu-RS.

Shoutouts to MudkipBeans for this goated core

Roserade outspeeds neutral Bisharp and Volcanion.
Urshifu is an excellent abuser of Roserade's spikes, and Roserade is able to take advantage of the Water and Grass types Urshifu forces in. Roserade is notably the tier's best Amoonguss counter, and Amoonguss is Urshifu's most important check.

Moltres is answered by Water and Rock types, all of which die to Bulu and most of which can be used as setup fodder. Bulu struggles with Physically Defensive Grass resists such as Skarmory, Buzzwole, Altaria-Mega, and Amoonguss, all of which are demolished by Moltres.

:Ribombee: + :Bisharp:
Ribombee @ Focus Sash

Bisharp is the best way to abuse Defog attempts, making it essential on webs teams. It also appreciates being able to outspeed certain potential revenge killers such as Nidoking, Chandelure, and Mamoswine. Bisharp also complements webs because its access to Sucker Punch allows it to snipe faster webs immune mons such as Zeraora, Azelf, and Scarf Rotom-Wash.

Defensive Cores:

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD

Amoonguss and Hippowdon are together able to check the vast majority of the tier. Hippowdon is fairly good at absorbing the special attacks used to break Amoonguss, and Amoonguss demolishes the water types used to break Hippowdon.

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 23 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Flip Turn
- Toxic

Scizor lives Nihilego Meteor Beam and outspeeds most slow Aegislash variants, Swampert barely outspeeds common Rhyperior spreads while getting a slow Flip Turn on faster Swampert.
Scizor and Swampert are the backbone of many voltturn teams. They're both great at bringing in offensive threats, but they also have quite good defensive synergy. Scizor provides a 4x Grass resistance for Swampert, and Swampert is able to handle Fire types for Scizor. Both mons only have 1 weakness, so together they're quite good at taking miscellaneous hits from almost anything.
