Project National Dex Monotype Creative Sets & Good Cores

This thread is to allow all monotype players to share cool sets and ideas they have seen or made in the metagame. The idea is to not only increase the usage of unique sets in monotype but also to showcase how less used pokemon can be adapted for the monotype metagame. Below states what it means to have a creative or underrated set within the monotype metagame. Any post that is considered a gimmick will not be tolerated in the thread and deleted.

1. What is a creative moveset?
A) It has not previously been widely used.
B) It successfully pulls off a role, and is not strictly outclassed by other Pokemon in that role.
C) It takes advantage of metagame trends.
D) It has had some success. Post replays / logs to strengthen your case.

2. What is an underrated moveset?
A) It is an existing set that for whatever reason isn't common.
B) Its use is meant to prey on specific facets of the metagame.
C) It might be able to surprise and demolish Pokemon that normally counter the usual sets, but does not become a bad gimmick in order to do so.

3. What constitutes a good post?
1) Have a good description of the set.
2) Having relevant calcs to go along with the post.
3) Why did you use this set over the standard set?
4) Showing replays of the set in action.

4. What are some things that constitute a bad gimmick?
A) Using a Pokemon that has no business being used in Monotype, for the sake of using it (Shedinja / Glaceon).
B) Movesets that are inferior and ineffective compared to existing movesets (e.g. Swords Dance Venusaur), or using an obscure move for the sake of hitting an even more obscure check or counter.
C) Movesets that are utterly impractical or are horribly outclassed by another Pokemon (e.g. Dragon Dance Crawdaunt).
D) A bad gimmick is not limited to the above, though. The moderator team and I will use our best judgment to determine which sets should be deleted
E) If your set has been brought up multiple times and rejected for being a gimmick it will be listed in the Gimmicky/Rejected Sets in the OP

Every submission to this project will be responded to in a wave. If the submission is infact Creative and or Underrated it will be approved, however if it is a common set or unviable I will provide an explanation to why the set was not approved. Please also provide replays and a proper description of what the unique set does whether its the EVs, what it techs with a surprise move, etc.



What is a core?
Effective cores are essential in competitive Pokemon, and any good player uses them, intentionally or not. Defensive cores rely on covering a lot of attacking types and common threats within the core while also offering team support so that the core is useful even when walled. On the other hand, offensive cores still have the common attacking types covered between its members, but offensive synergy is most important. Be it one member of the core attracting Pokemon that another member can easily switch into and force out, one member luring and weakening the checks and counters of another, or one member being able to beat the Pokemon that the other can't, those are the characteristics that are wanted from a good offensive core. Finally, there are mixed or balanced cores and support and pivoting cores, which blend into offensive and defensive cores. Support or pivoting elements in cores aim to either provide easier switch-in and set up chances to offensive Pokemon, or help to wall and stall out the opponent in the case of defensive cores. -Alexwolf

The Monotype metagame presents a unique challenge for building viable cores because each Pokemon on the team must share a common type, which leads to shared weaknesses and STAB attacks.

Having a solid core is the starting point for building a top-notch team. The purpose of this thread is to discuss Monotype cores and, more importantly, provide a database of good cores for players to begin building their teams around.

As we have begun a new generation with Sun and Moon, this thread will be starting completely from scratch, so involvement is not only highly encouraged but utterly necessary. If you have an awesome core, we still want to see it!​

Doesn’t take a genius to figure this one out. Pelipper sets the rain, can handle hazards, annoys stuff with its STABs, and can provide momentum, while Mega Swampert eats Electric moves, clicks buttons against everything while rain is up, and can also provide momentum or Stealth Rock. Pelipper also has access to Specs to form an insane offensive core with Pert that is almost impossible to switch into without getting punished by pivot move or nuclear STABs.

While its not easy being green, these two as a defensive backbone for grass can lighten the load alot more than expected. Both Appletun's and Ferrothorn's excellent defense typing allow them to cover each other Excellently in almost every regard. Appletun takes Neutral fire damage, and what damage it would take is halved from Thick Fat, allowing it to take Weather Balls from Zard Y or searing shots from Victini, something its predecessor and potential partner, venusaur-mega, couldn't brag about, along with access to recover and leech seed for sustain, and a surprisingly powerful STAB arsenal of Draco Meteor and the defensive cutting Apple Acid. What Appletun lacks in Defense bulk and tanking powerful ice/flying moves, ferrothorn makes up for without breaking a real sweat. Leftovers and leech seed sustainably allow ferrothorn to outlast most of the threats to appletun, and Ferrothorn's supportive movepool in the way of Spikes or Stealth Rock hazards or even status moves in thunder wave and toxic allow for the eventual slow burn of any pokemon's hp. The core overall allows Grass to manage a few of its glaring weaknesses while maintaining pressure in the form of either hazards, status, or leech stalling.

Watch out! This pair of creepy crawlers will destroy unprepared teams! With there high attack and special attack, there perfect on the same team! But really there able to take on each others checks due to them taking advantage of their bulk investment. For example Volcorana can be a deadly sweeper but it has to be aware of mons such as Blissey, Mantine, and Toxapex. But Pinsir with a boost easily takes down these treaths. And while Pinsir struggles with mons such as Ferrothorn, Melmetal, Cellestela, Volcarona destroys on the 1v1 besides the autonomize set. Alongside the other cast such as scizor to shattter rock types with b-punch, and araquinid to take on mons such as hetran, and rapid spin support from fortress/armaldo, and you'v got a offensive core that will mow down teams.

This set I saw on a team Attribute made and I thought it was super cool. Fairies are the bane of Kommo-o's existence, especially on fighting who are already fighting an uphill battle. This set can lure fairys out letting Kommo-o dd for free then killing with Kommo-o’s z move. This set also has bolt beam coverage for flying types, another weakness to the type.

Normally Pokemon like sub roost Kyurem can wall Greninja's normal sets. Low Kick let's Greninja ko kuyrem after it swap into an ice beam. This also let's Greninja 1hko Bisharp, Weavile, Mega Tyranitar. While also 2hko on Ferrothorn and Heatran both pokemon that can generally be used as defsive counters.

With Mega Gallade being S and A rank on fighting and psyicic respectively, posion teams tends to get mowed down by this pokemon. With 64 attack investment this let's Crobats Brave Bird have a 75% chance of killing from max Heath. Crobat also has speed EVs that speed creep Greninja.

Mega Tyranitar is the best physical attacker that Dark has access, so its kinda easy to figure out why it replaces Urshifu-S. It is a bit slower than Urshifu-S and doesn't has priority moves, but it has more Attack and bulk, its higher bulk let it have more setup options behind dual screens, Tyranitar also has different coverage options to deal with other matchups. Therefore, this is the reason i think that Mega Tyranitar should replace Urshifu-S on the Dual Screen offense core.

I think that Mega Gallade is the main choice to replace Urshifu-S in the Fighting Offensive core. Although you would use both in a Fighting team, i'm just talking about the core here. Mega Gallade is Psychic-type, has access to Swords Dance, Knock Off and Close Combat, and has more Speed and Attack than Urshifu-S, so i find it does a similar role as great wallbreaker and can tank some Psychic moves.
