In Monotype more so than other tiers, there are huge threats that can be very hard to get past for types that have a large amount of shared weaknesses. As such, teambuilding in Monotype can be tough and there are so many teambuilding pressures that it can be difficult to decide what to do add on to counteract them. This thread is meant to serve as a resource by showing checks and counters to common threats in the Monotype metagame.

Rules:
1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion, along with the big types that the Pokemon is a threat to. Within ≈ 7 days' time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week, for one type or for every type.

2. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

3. Follow the definitions for checks and counters, by MattL in The Smog Issue 32! (With a loose interpretation , as since this is Monotype it is hard to fit these criteria.)

4. Make sure your Pokemon is viable. If your Pokemon isn't ranked in the viability rankings here, then don't post it.

5. From Tuesday to Friday each person can only nominate one Pokemon. From Saturday to Monday each person can nominate as many Pokemon as he/she wants.

6. Post calcs if not obvious, and definitely provide a few lines of description.

7. You may reserve a check or counter, but you must post within a day of reserving or it's free for someone else to take.

8. Help people out if you think they're wrong, but please be nice.

9. Avoid flooding and "memeing", don't post if you have nothing to say.

10. If you have any suggestion about the project, PM me on Smogon.

i dont think steel should be listed as one of the types seeing as standard defensive mega scizor and skarmory both switch into this hoopa u set with ease

76 SpA Hoopa Unbound Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory: 108-127 (32.3 - 38%) -- 97.1% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
76 SpA Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Hole vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory: 96-113 (28.7 - 33.8%) -- 0.9% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Fury vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 136-162 (39.6 - 47.2%) -- 41% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
76 SpA Hoopa Unbound Psychic vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Scizor: 81-96 (23.6 - 27.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock

If Hoopa locks itself into any move other than drain punch (which the above can switch into) bisharp can kill it with sucker or pursuit or cripple it to the point where and priority kos it
252 Atk Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 214-253 (71 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
(Pursuit gets the same bp as sucker if he switches out)

If your feeling cheeky even Doublade can beat hoopa 1v1 with iron head and shadow sneak
252+ Atk Doublade Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 216-255 (71.7 - 84.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Doublade Shadow Sneak vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 109-129 (36.2 - 42.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

And even if you dont have your 2 S rank pokemon or are missing your a ranked bisharp and doublade excadrill still revenges hoopa u and ferrothorn can counter it

180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 124-146 (35.2 - 41.4%) -- 99.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 258-304 (85.7 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 283-334 (94 - 110.9%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

For hoopa u to really be a threat to steel teams it should be running the steel breaking set (pretty sure barian/pk kaiser made it)

mandibuzz can switch in to literally any of this hoopa-u's attacks. even though it's nowhere near outspeeding, hoopa can barely touch it, while mandibuzz can click foul play to possibly ohko and click roost to get hp up if it's worn down a little by pebbles. the calcs speak for themselves (even though i'm pretty sure they're lying, what is this sorcery)

Answer to SubMindRaikou :

Honestly, Steel was a mistake from me. And about Fairy the rules specify "one Pokemon" not a core, and yes Klefki is the "only" viable counter to Scarfed Hoopa-U Gunkshot in Fairy, so i think Fairy can be type weak to Hoopa-U without Klefki. I keep Fairy and remove Steel. Thanks for the remark.

Ice check.

Sets:

Weavile @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Knock Off
- Low Kick
- Pursuit

or...

Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard / Pursuit
- Low Kick / Pursuit

Explanation:
While it should be switching in Unbound Hoopa's STAB moves only in desperation, Weavile checks it very well. Choice Scarf Weavile works best against it due to the fact it can freely hit Hoopa with Knock Off or trap it with Pursuit if it was locked into an unconvenient move or it tries to avoid a potential Life Orb-boosted Ice Shard.

Note: all Pursuit calculations are for instances where the target switches out.

Choice Scarf Weavile:
252+ Atk Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 277-327 (92 - 108.6%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Weavile Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 229-270 (76 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Weavile Pursuit vs. -1 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 343-405 (113.9 - 134.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Life Orb Weavile:
252+ Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 149-177 (49.5 - 58.8%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Shard vs. -1 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 224-265 (74.4 - 88%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 270-320 (89.7 - 106.3%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO

If Weavile is forced to switch-in directly:
160 Atk Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Fury vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 128-151 (45.5 - 53.7%) -- 41% chance to 2HKO
160 Atk Hoopa Unbound Gunk Shot vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 205-242 (72.9 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Staraptor @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Double Edge
- Close Combat
- U-turn

Get Staraptor in, press U-turn, done. Get Staraptor in, press Double-Edge, done. Get Staraptor in, press Brave Bird, done. All KO Hoopa-U, making it a perfect counter to it. Intimidate helps bluff a defensive set and weakens the power of some of Hoopa-U's moves, which is why it's a soft counter, because Psychic is unaffected by Intimidate and still does a good chunk.

252 Atk Staraptor U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 488-576 (162.1 - 191.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Staraptor Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 313-369 (103.9 - 122.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 313-369 (103.9 - 122.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

-1 180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Gunk Shot vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Staraptor: 130-154 (41.8 - 49.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
-1 180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Staraptor: 82-97 (26.3 - 31.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
-1 180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Fury vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Staraptor: 162-192 (52 - 61.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Grass Check:

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Leech Seed
- Spikes
- Protect / Thunder Wave
- Gyro Ball

Ferrothorn is by far one of the best checks Grass teams have for Hoopa-Unbound. With a physically defensive based set, it is able to takes most of its moves with ease, especially considering the mentioned set for Hoopa-Unbound lacks Fire Punch. Drain punch/Hyperspace Fury deals only 30-36% damage, as shown by the calcs:
´

180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 110-130 (31.2 - 36.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
180 Atk Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Fury vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 109-129 (30.9 - 36.6%) -- 99.5% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Furthermore, Gyro Ball deals massive damage to it, allowing it to effectively OHKO its target thanks to Rocky Helmet and Iron Barbs (even if Drain Punch heals, the heal still comes before the residual damage, so it will never be at full health)

20 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 258-304 (85.7 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

The week is end, and only few nominations ... I'll uptade archives later on the day.

Week 9 - Quiver Dance Volcarona (Bug)
Types : Psychic Bug Steel Ground Dark Ice Grass Ghost Electric Fairy

Volcarona @ Lum Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Fiery Dance
- Giga Drain
- Bug Buzz

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 228 HP / 252 SpA / 28 Spe
Modest Nature
- Lava Plume
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Earth Power
- Stone Edge

Heatran is one of the most important steel type pokemon, and with its immunity to fire and 4x resistance to giga drain and bug buzz it makes the perfect Volcarona counter. EVs can be anything really, this just outruns Mega Venusaur and non invested base 80s with the rest into spatk and bulk.

+6 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 228 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 79-94 (20.7 - 24.7%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
+6 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 228 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 143-169 (37.6 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0- Atk Heatran Stone Edge vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 340-400 (103.3 - 121.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The only problem comes when switching into a giga drain or bug buzz then facing hp ground next turn, but you didnt slash that onto this set :p

Psychic Check:

Victini @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- U-Turn
- Bolt Strike
- Blue Flare
- V-Create

Pretty much Psychic's most reliable answer to Volcarona without ruining the fundamentals of the team. With Choice Scarf, you outspeed Volcarona at +1 and can easily KO it with V-Create. Note that this is a check not a counter, so it cannot directly switch in as it is 2HKOd on the switch by Bug Buzz.

Calcs:
252 Atk Victini V-create vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 348-411 (105.7 - 124.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 153-180 (44.8 - 52.7%) -- 22.7% chance to 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 228-268 (66.8 - 78.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 303-357 (88.8 - 104.6%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO (Needs +2 to OHKO)

Gotta get the easy ones out of the way :P

Ghost Counter:

Chandelure @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball
- Trick

The only true counter Ghost has against Volcarona, Chandelure can take anything that Volcarona can dish out, and retaliate in return with the power it offers via its 145 SAtk. Being as the Volcarona listed lacks Roost, the Choice Scarf set will work better over the Sub CM set, which works better against Roost variants. Although with each Quiver Dance the damage is reduced, eventually Volcarona will fall after 3-4 hits depending on when it is you actually hit Volcarona (+0 or +1). Calcs to be presented below:

+6 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Chandelure: 182-215 (69.7 - 82.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+6 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Chandelure: 164-193 (62.8 - 73.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Chandelure Fire Blast vs. 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 187-222 (56.8 - 67.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Chandelure Shadow Ball vs. 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 136-162 (41.3 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Chandelure Shadow Ball vs. +1 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 91-108 (27.6 - 32.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Chandelure Fire Blast vs. +1 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 126-148 (38.2 - 44.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Chandelure Fire Blast vs. +2 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 94-112 (28.5 - 34%) -- 1.8% chance to 3HKO
252 SpA Chandelure Shadow Ball vs. +2 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 69-82 (20.9 - 24.9%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

Diancie-Mega @ Diancite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs:4 Atk/252 SpD/252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Diamond Storm
- Moonblast
- Earth Power
- Protect

The fairy princess has come to eat some fire bug booty.

This might seem like a bit of a retarded odd set. I mean, specially defensive Diancie? As it turns out, a Diamond Storm from a Mega Diancie with no Attack investment and an Attack-reducing nature still kills Volcarona. By a lot.

0- Atk Mega Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 828-976 (251.6 - 296.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

But that is not important. What is important is that Diamond Storm mops the floor with Volcarona. Literally:
4 Atk Mega Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 924-1092 (280.8 - 331.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The SpD investment is to take a Giga Drain at +1

252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Mega Diancie: 124-148 (51.4 - 61.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Mega Diancie: 188-222 (78 - 92.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Volcarona outspeeds Diancie at +1, but doesn't kill it.

Fairy Check

Azumarill @ Leftovers
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Protect
- Scald/Seismic Toss
- Perish Song

Absorbs Giga Drain and doesn't care about Volcarona's Stabs
(Pretty much from Thimo's Stall Water with full Sp.Def investment and Seismic Toss as an option for Scald)

Water is not a type to choose from, you can only choose from the types MiyoKa specified in the post

And you could pretty much edit your last post to avoid double posting next time.
