Project Lure That Threat: LC Edition: Week 7 - Foongus

spiedr (Spinarak) @ Eviolite
Ability: Insomnia
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sticky Web
- Megahorn
- Sucker Punch
- Psychic

Although Croagunk's STABs are resisted by Spinarak, Spinarak's Bug/Poison STAB moves are left walled by Croagunk, which can easily set up Nasty Plots or Bulk Ups in front of it (or just Knock Off and attack in the case of this week's set, point is Spinarak is walled). By using Psychic, you can easily 2HKO Croagunk. It's also fun because no one expects Psychic from a physical attacking spider!

Pawniard @ Eviolite
Ability: Defiant
Level: 5
EVs: 156 Atk / 36 Def / 116 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Sucker Punch
- Psycho Cut

Gunk is a pretty good Pawn check, and if they are running it that's probably their go-to Pawn "counter" because there's like 4 Pawn switch-ins in LC. So they switch it in, you Psycho Cut on the switch to assert dominance, they get tilted from getting thrashed by a Psycho Cut Pawniard, and the game pretty much ends right there. Good on teams that want Gunk gone for something else I guess!

156 Atk Pawniard Psycho Cut vs. 132 HP / 116 Def Eviolite Croagunk: 20-28 (86.9 - 121.7%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
(20, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24, 28)

Mienfoo @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 196 Def / 36 SpD / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- U-Turn
- Acrobatics

Gunk is a pretty good Foo check, and usually Gunk is a team's Fighting answer, so while Acrobatics on Foo isn't that uncommon, it's still a good lure as most Gunks expect Fake Out or HJK, so they Knock Off Foo's Eviolite and get destroyed by Acrobatics. While AcroFoo isn't uncommon by any means, it's still a good lure to things like Foongus and Cottonee.

0 Atk Mienfoo Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 132 HP / 116 Def Eviolite Croagunk: 14-18 (60.8 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

With some prior damage, Gunk gets killed by Acrobatics.

And if you Knock Off Gunk's Eviolite:
0 Atk Mienfoo Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 132 HP / 116 Def Croagunk: 22-26 (95.6 - 113%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Surskit @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 20 Def / 196 SpA / 20 SpD / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
- Baton Pass / Sticky Web
- Hydro Pump
- Psybeam
- Signal Beam

With full investment and a life orb, Surskit can make an excellent lure to tons of things, and can even be used to clean up on teams with its excellent coverage. Not all Surskit need to run Sticky Web, especially if the enemy team has Snivy and Pawniard and whatnot. With a hefty 14 Special Attack, it rivals the threat that is Life Orb Cottonee. Psybeam is an easy OHKO on Croagunk, and most Croagunk will never suspect it considering that they never run it. Signal Beam and Hydro Pump are two good STABs, only really resisted by things like Mantyke. Baton Pass can be used as a sort of psuedo U-turn, to stop things like double switches and whatnot, and if you feel that you don't really need to lure in things like Croagunk you can even run Agility and pass it to a teammate. Of course, you can also be a complete pussy and just run Sticky Web like every Brazilian out there, but that's up to you!

On the analysis and common, not a lure, acro foo also sorta goes into that category but no one uses it anymore

I posted it exactly because I saw acrofoo, which I think its more common than zen carvanha anyway
So here's the 1760 usage stats if you want hard numbers.
Acrobatics 12.782% on Mienfoo
Zen Headbutt 27.070% on Carvanha

And the 1630 usage stats
Acrobatics 15.796%
Zen Headbutt 27.246%

Zen Headbutt is actually in the top 5 moves for Carvanha even in the 0 stats, right behind the standard Protect/Waterfall/Crunch/Ajet. Acrobatics is near the bottom, a trend that's actually been going on for a while. While you end up seeing more AcroFoo simply because Mienfoo is on more than a third of teams and Carvanha just isn't, you're actually far more likely to see ZHB on Carvanha than you are to see Acrobatics on Mienfoo.

I mean it's not like a bad "lure" or anything, it's just that it's not particularly unexpected.

I'll put a Zorua Sprite here later

Zorua @ Life Orb
Level: 5
Ability: Illusion
EVs: 36 Def / 196 SpA / 36 SpD / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot / Knock Off
- Dark Pulse
- Extrasensory
- U-turn / HP Fight

Extrasensory is hyper standard on Zorua but it functions as a lure due to Illusion. You can disguise it as a common Pokemon that Gunk walls, like acro-less mienfoo and pawniard, and get the OHKO with Extrasensory. You even live VWave if you can't make the prediction.

Cheek Pouch wins last week's competition with a rather smart usage of Zorua which can be coupled with a variety of pokemon to take Croagunk and other threats by surprise rather easily, while additionally having utility in Knock Off or Nasty Plot. ZoroarkForever's Skrelp also gets special mention for being extremely viable however still uncommon enough to take Croagunk by surprise.

This Week's Threat to Lure is:

Foongus @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 124 HP / 160 Def / 160 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Stun Spore

Foongus finds itself a niche on balanced and defensive teams through its incredible pivoting capabilities. Solid bulk when equipped with an Eviolite paired with a stellar defensive typing that grants numerous resistances make Foongus an incredibly tough Pokemon for several top-tier threats, such as Mienfoo and Spritzee, to break. An excellent disruptive movepool that includes Spore, Stun Spore, and Clear Smog means a well-played Foongus is a severe nuisance to the enemy team. What really makes Foongus one of the best pivots available is its ability, Regenerator, which means that Foongus is easily able to switch in and out of favorable and unfavorable match-ups without worry and persist to be a thorn in the opposition's side for most of the match.

Sorry to disappoint, but foongus is unbeatable

As stated in the OP, lures are
specific pokemon that run an unexpected move or moveset in order to weaken or directly OHKO a specific threat, and pave the way for another sweeper
Now, the issue with this for Foongus is that you absolutely have to OHKO Foongus from the get-go, or KO it with a combination of a normal attack followed by an unorthodox move. Given the above definition, 2HKOs where only the unorthodox move is used wouldn't be enough for Foongus, as it could merely switch out and heal back a good portion of the damage, allowing it to continue to check whatever else that doesn't have a special coverage move. For example, say you're using LO Ice Beam Shellos to lure Foongus so that your Wailmer can sweep. Foongus is no longer able to check your amazing new Shellos variant, so on paper this is a lure, but since the goal of this thread is
to improve the Teambuilding aspect LC has currently
it isn't an effective lure, because it's completely useless for an actual team as a Foongus lure; you can Ice Beam the Foongus, but if it just switches out, it'll still be healthy enough to check Wailmer, and even if it isn't, it could just switch in and out on something weaker later in the match until Wailmer can't hope to break past it.
So going back to OHKOing/surprise comboing Foongus, the former isn't feasible for a lure because Foongus is bulky enough that arbitrary coverage moves won't be enough, and if you could OHKO Foongus with anything, then Foongus probably wouldn't be switching in.
The problem with surprise combos is that Foongus is a very important mon, so most Pokemon that could run a coverage move to beat Foongus probably will, and this thread is attempting to improve our knowledge of effective lures, so known threats like acrofoo don't count.
Foongus's bulk again comes into play here, because we are now pretty much left with LO + dumb coverage move combinations. In a metagame where Berry Juice is great and Eviolite is better, viable LO mons better have something extra powerful to make themselves worth using. But once Mienfoo or Corphish reveals its LO and gets rid of Foongus's Eviolite, Foongus is already tipped off that it might be wrecked if it stays in, regardless of the dumb coverage move, because:
236 Atk Life Orb Reckless Mienfoo High Jump Kick vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Foongus: 14-17 (56 - 68%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(14, 14, 14, 14, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 17)
196+ Atk Life Orb Adaptability Corphish Crabhammer vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Foongus: 13-16 (52 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 16)
196+ Atk Life Orb Corphish Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Eviolite Foongus: 8-10 (32 - 40%) -- 99.3% chance to 3HKO
(8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 10)
Which is an issue because if Foongus needs to be preserved to check something else, and this is important because the goal of the lure is to get rid of Foongus so that the something else won't be checked, then as soon as it takes a boosted Koff, there's nothing from stopping it from switching right back out.

There may be a very small number of exceptions to the above that are never ever worth using in practice, but overall I feel that Foongus is not a good choice for this thread for the above reasons. As such I suggest that something less cute like houndog should be used, thanks i appreciate it

after an hour of playing with this set on ladder, I must say this is super fun and I enjoy using it and have successfully lured two foonguses (foongi?)

meet daddy

Wailmer @ Life Orb
Ability: Water Veil
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 76 Def / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Zen Headbutt
- Earthquake
- Substitute

Basically if you see Father Wailmer on the ladder, it's gonna be using scarf Water Spout. This set capitalizes on the often seen Water-type move spam that Foongus can switch in on and threaten the 2HKO with Zen Headbutt. Waterfall is obligatory STAB and EQ is good coverage, and can OHKO Eviolite Pawniard after minor damage, while outright OHKOing any other variation (be it having an Eviolite KOff'd by a teammate or if it's like Scarf) and you love any other attack. Substitute lets you play around vs Sucker Punch on Pawn and avoid Foongus' Spore if you'd like.

It's actually a solid mon and should see more usage. I love it.

RP CRAN

Cranidos @ Eviolite
Ability: Sheer Force
Level: 5
EVs: 60 HP / 236 Atk / 116 Def / 36 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Rock Slide
- Fire Punch
- Zen Headbutt
- Rock Polish

Is Foongus unlureable?? If so, this is about as good as you can get to doing so. This sucker is a super roll away from OHKOing Foongus with ZHB with Rocks up! You might think two things from here: who switches a Foongus in on CRAN, and if it doesn't OHKO how is it a lure? Well, Cranidos is one of those super dangerous mons that you should always try to scout; what better to scout a monster like CRAN than a super Regenerator mon? Cue ZHB, and Foongus is instantly at ~2 HP. Of course, it can switch out now to get health back, but the ~36% HP it will then be at is far from able to check just about anything, especially not a don like CRAN that can 2HKO it with Rock Slide regardless!

Basically, Cranidos removes just about any chance Foongus has of checking powerful Pokemon like Corphish anymore in the match, usually making it death fodder, and since according to Levi "the goal of the lure is to get rid of Foongus so that the something else won't be checked," Cranidos does perfectly.

Additionally, in terms of the team building aspect of LC, Cranidos does just fine.

While I absolutely agree with Levi in that Foongus isn't exactly the best thing ever for a lure thread, I'll give it a go.

Drilbur @ Life Orb
Ability: Mold Breaker
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 212 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin / Shadow Claw
- Rock Slide

Foongus switches in on Drilbur quite often (although not as often as Pumpkaboo but they don't really synergize), but LO Drilbur can 2HKO it. But to avoid Levi's prediction of Foongus just switching out, Drilbur should SD on the switch, which lets it OHKO Foongus right away, when it will likely remain in to do massive damage with Giga Drain and then switch out to regenerator off most damage or just plain KO. LO lets Drilbur just OHKO Foongus and be in a position to threaten everything slower. Shadow Claw can be run over Rapid Spin or Rock Slide in order to do the same to Pumpkaboo.

But yeah it's a lot like what Levi said but I tried!

Snivy @ Berry Juice
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 240 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Glare
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Fire]

All three of those are a known set (rp cranidos isn't checked by foongus unless to Rk regardless and the latter 2 are pn the analysis, just changed hp flying to fire

gather around ye little cup children to feast yer eyes upon this glory

git gud (Ferroseed) @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 84 HP / 36 Atk / 188 Def / 148 SpD / 36 Spe
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off
- Thunder Wave
- Leech Seed

The basis of this set is that Foongus is one of the safest switch-ins to Ferroseed since it resists Bullet Seed + Leech Seed + Sheer Bulk. But with Knock Off you take off that Eviolite, the bane of Foongus everywhere, so stuff like this can happen next.

236 Atk Life Orb Mienfoo High Jump Kick vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Foongus: 12-14 (48 - 56%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
240+ SpA Magnemite Flash Cannon vs. 124 HP / 160 SpD Foongus: 13-16 (52 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
I like the idea, but no sane player would ever switch this specific foongus set in on Ferroseed since it's not running Hidden Power Fire or even Fighting but instead Stun Spore. Basically it'd be switching in a mon that can only use Giga Drain on Ferroseed. I don't think most people would go for that.

Seel @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 236 Def / 36 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Icicle Spear

Thanks to Seel's pure Water typing, Foongus is expected to be a good switch-in to it due to its great bulk and Water resistance. However, Icicle Spear allows Seel to 2HKO Foongus unless you get 2 hits twice, which isn't very likely. The cool thing about this set is that it does have a chance to OHKO Foongus with 5 hits, so even after switching out to recover off damage from like a 3 or 4 hit Icicle Spear Foongus will not be able to check Seel reliably.

Timburr @ Eviolite/Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
Level: 5
EVs: 76 HP / 116 Atk / 156 Def / 156 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Ice Punch
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch

Foongus is a regular check to Timburr, so you can Knock Off in the switch, and then kill with Sheer Force powered Ice Punch.

116+ Atk Timburr Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Eviolite Foongus: 6-8 (24 - 32%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO
116+ Atk Sheer Force Timburr Ice Punch vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Foongus: 18-22 (72 - 88%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

W/ Life Orb:
116+ Atk Life Orb Timburr Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Eviolite Foongus: 8-10 (32 - 40%) -- 99.3% chance to 3HKO
116+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Timburr Ice Punch vs. 124 HP / 160+ Def Foongus: 23-29 (92 - 116%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
