Project Lure That Threat: LC Edition: Week 7 - Foongus

Mienfoo @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Drain Punch
- Poison Jab
- Knock Off

Snubbul was supposed to be a safe switch-in to Mienfoo, as it can come in on Drain Punch or Knock Off and then just use Thief, paralyze something with Thunder Wave or deal decent damage with Play Rough; thanks to the combination of Swords Dance + Poison Jab Mienfoo is able to OHKO Snubbul. This set is pretty good versus bulky teams as well.
+1 236 Atk Mienfoo Poison Jab vs. 36 HP / 36+ Def Snubbull: 24-30 (104.3 - 130.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Riolu @ Eviolite
Ability: Prankster
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Def / 116 SpD / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Copycat
- High Jump Kick
- Iron Tail
- Swords Dance

Lets give some love to a really cool, yet underused fighting type in Riolu. The premise here is pretty obvious, you SD on the switch, and then OHKO Snubs with your +1 Iron Tail. (provided you hit of course) Then, once Snubs is gone, you can hopefully get an HJK off and start your copycat train.

Sandile @ Life Orb
Ability: Moxie
Level: 5
EVs: 180 Atk / 76 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hone Claws
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Iron Tail

With Intimidate and its typing advantage, Snubbull beats most variants of Sandile pretty safely, so it's lured in easily enough. Use Hone Claws on the switch-in, then annihilate Snubbull with a Life Orb-boosted Iron Tail. The accuracy is what sets it apart from other lures that rely on Iron Tail, since they'll fail 25% of the time. Iron Tail hits stuff like Spritzee, Cottonee, and Archen pretty hard too, so yeah. Good mon/10
180 Atk Life Orb Sandile Iron Tail vs. 36 HP / 36 Def Snubbull: 26-31 (113 - 134.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ability: Prankster
Level: 5
EVs: 196 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Iron Tail
- Copycat
- High Jump Kick

This set is something cool af, its a good lure to both Fairy-types, meaning that it actually has functionality in breaking even more stally teams and powering through the common PorySpritz core. 17 attack is mandatory in order to KO both Snubbull and Spritzee with HJK + Swords Dance boosted Iron Tail. The 196 Health EVs are the best in order to live Play Rough, but if not needing to check Snubbull is fine (since you DO KO with SD --> Iron Tail with SR up) then you can run max speed or even 36 / 116 Spd. Riolu is actually a good mon to pair on teams since its a lot more viable than Axew is and can seriously threaten shittons of mons with HJK --> Copycat. I'd pair a good Gastly answer with this and a good Fletchling switchin, preferably something that doesn't lose to 15 Speed Overheat Fletch as Riolu can outspeed slower Fletch, meaning that it can't revenge kill you. Stuff like Amaura is cool, or Omastar / Tirtouga.

+1 196+ Atk Riolu Iron Tail vs. 36 HP / 36 Def Snubbull: 30-36 (130.4 - 156.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
196+ Atk Snubbull Play Rough vs. 196 HP / 0 Def Roseli Berry Riolu: 16-21 (69.5 - 91.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

12 SpA Spritzee Moonblast vs. 196 HP / 0 SpD Roseli Berry Riolu: 13-16 (56.5 - 69.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 196+ Atk Riolu Iron Tail vs. 212 HP / 196+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 22-26 (81.4 - 96.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
196+ Atk Riolu High Jump Kick vs. 212 HP / 196+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 5-6 (18.5 - 22.2%) -- possible 5HKO

(you always KO spritzee with HJK on the switch --> Swords dance on the moonblast --> iron tail)

OK so for my first post on Smogon: My lure is
Timburr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 76 SpD / 156 Spe

- Drain Punch
- Knock Off

-1 196+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Timburr Poison Jab vs. 36 HP / 36+ Def Snubbull: 18-23 (78.2 - 100%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
So Snubbull likes switching into Timburr. Poison jab on a predicted switch and punish Snubbull. PLUS speed creeps Snub by 1 point. Also 2hkoes Spritz if you REALLY hate fairies. Also pjab doesn't miss unlike all those iron tail gimmicks.
Edit: If using Bulk Up, snub comes in as you negate intimidate and then
196+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Timburr Poison Jab vs. 36 HP / 36+ Def Snubbull: 29-34 (126 - 147.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

so yeah mankey is honestly a super underrated mon. hits really hard and has the coverage to bop almost every traditional fight check. it also gets defiant which is cool. a lot of people dont really know what mankey does/that it gets gunk shot, and when they switch in snubbull (their fight check) they suddenly have to deal with a +1 LO mankey that OHKOes their snubbull w/ gunk shot. cool mon, deserves more usage.

EVs: 52 HP / 124 Atk / 76 SpD / 212 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw

Iron Tail's 13% accuracy (it can feel like that) means that this is a dicey choice, but after a Dragon Dance nullifies Snubbull's Intimidate on the switch, it does enormous damage to Snubbull.

Ability: Shed Skin
Level: 5
EVs: 244 Atk / 36 SpD / 196 Spe

Ah, Dratini. What a cool sweeper with priority in Extreme Speed. So, the scenario here is Dratini comes in and attempts to sweep by setting up Dragon Dance. Snubbs comes in, lowers Dratini's Attack, and now you got a +0 Attack +1 Speed Dratini. Now, Snubbs will stay in, predicting you to switch and probably either tWave or Play Rough, and then it gets surprised by a LO Iron Tail smacking it in the face, OHKOing it. And even if you don't set up, -1 LO Iron Tail still does a fuckton to Snubbull.

244+ Atk Life Orb Dratini Iron Tail vs. 36 HP / 36 Def Snubbull: 29-34 (126 - 147.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
-1 244+ Atk Life Orb Dratini Iron Tail vs. 36 HP / 36 Def Snubbull: 18-23 (78.2 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

I'm not going to disagree that this beats Snubbull, but it's also the main set, so I'm not really sure how much of a "lure" it is. More of a surprise for people unaware of damage calcs.

Last week's winner is sparktrain for providing a solid lure which is both 100% reliable and not as obvious as other lures. Melonz also gets a shout out for very similar reasons however.

This Week's Threat to Lure is:

Honedge @ Eviolite
Ability: No Guard
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 36 Def / 220 SpD / 52 Spe
Careful Nature
- Sacred Sword
- Iron Head
- Pursuit
- Shadow Sneak

Honedge has a unique typing which allows for it to switch in and Pursuit trap a variety of threats, most notably Fletchling, Abra, and occasionally slightly-below-full-Gastly. Additonally, Honedge has the ability to hard wall several of the teir's most potent sweepers in Shellder, Treecko the god, non HP Fire/Ground Snivy, and Spritzee, and revenge kill slightly weakened set up sweepers with Shadow Sneak.

Cheryl.

Celesteela is Life

Shellder @ Eviolite
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 36 Def / 76 SpA / 124 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Hydro Pump

So you say Honedge can wall Shellder eh? Well look at this! I actually really like mixed Shellder because most physical walls don't expect Hydro Pump and... well they get Hydro Pumped lol. The EV spread is nothing too special, just 76 SpA EVs to guarantee a 2HKO on Honedge after a Shell Smash. 124 Speed EVs allow Shellder to reach 24 Speed after Shell Smash, which while not as fast as 26 Speed, is still pretty fast, and still allows Shellder to keep a bit of bulk.

+2 76 SpA Shellder Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 220+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 15-18 (71.4 - 85.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 76 SpA Shellder Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 220+ SpD Honedge: 21-25 (100 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO If it's BJ Honedge

Abra @ Focus Sash
Level: 5
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 240 SpA / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Energy Ball
- Hidden Power Fighting
- Shadow Ball

While Shadow Ball has heavily fallen out of favor since Misdreavus left, it still does a good job of luring Honedge as well as beating some psychic types. Honedge takes massive damage from Shadow Ball, so instead of forcing "Abra loses its sash/dies now" it instead forces a 50/50 with Shadow Sneak vs Pursuit to break Abra's sash, and if your Fletchling needs Honedge just gone in order to sweep then you can kill it. This set forgoes the apparently standard for some reason Dazzling Gleam in order to deal with most everything Abra needs too even if Honedge isn't on the opponent's team, meaning that it's still about as effective as non-luring sets. The EVs are standard as hell, and allow Abra to 2HKO Honedge. This lure does require that you predict Honedge to switch in though, since if it doesn't you'll generally still lose in the long run.

Fletchling
Level: 5
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 76 HP / 200 Atk / 12 Def / 40 SpA / 180 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Acrobatics
- Overheat
- U-turn
- Swords Dance
So this kills Honedge with 3 Overheats! You hit on the switch, Overheat again, live the Iron Head, and Overheat a third time to kill!
40 SpA Fletchling Overheat vs. 0 HP / 236+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 10-14 (47.6 - 66.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO
(10, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14)
-2 40 SpA Fletchling Overheat vs. 0 HP / 236+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 6-8 (28.5 - 38%) -- 1.1% chance to 3HKO
(6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 8)
-4 40 SpA Fletchling Overheat vs. 0 HP / 236+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 4-6 (19 - 28.5%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO
(4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6)

Amaura @ Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Refrigerate
EVs: 60 HP / 220 SpA / 228 Spe
Modest Nature
- Rock Polish
- Hyper Voice
- Earth Power
- Substitute

This is somewhat standard but nevertheless this set is still good.
You send this out on something you can sub on (eg. Fletch), they switch into Honedge. Earth power should 2HKO Honedge.
220+ SpA Amaura Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 220+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 10-14 (47.6 - 66.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO

If you are the unluckiest person and have to go for the 3HKO after getting two really low rolls, it's still fine. Since you set up a sub. They'll break it turn 1 and you get damage off. Since they expect Honedge to faint the following turn, they will go for a shadow sneak.
196 Atk Honedge Shadow Sneak vs. 60 HP / 0 Def Amaura: 7-9 (28 - 36%) -- 1.1% chance to 3HKO

This just sets off berry juice bringing you to max again. Then you can proceed to KO it turn 3 if necessary but as I said this is highly unlikely.

Note: You can only beat Honedge with a sub up or when it switches in since it beats you 1v1 with Iron head.

Cottonee @ Choice Specs
Trait: Infiltrator / Prankster
EVs: 224 SpA / 36 SpD / 232 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dazzling Gleam
- Hidden Power Ground
- Giga Drain / Memento
- Switcheroo

The prospect of Honedge possibly being hit with a Knock Off or a Stun Spore is quite annoying, but both of these are quite rare, (22.1% and 25.8% usage in November) making it an ideal switch-in to Cottonee, as it easily shrugs off its STAB moves and replies with a devastating Iron Head. However, this set is designed to lure in the majority of Cottonee's counters, particularly Steel-types. Honedge and Pawniard are both 2HKOed by Choice Specs HP Ground with Stealth Rock up, while Magnemite, a fairly consistent check to Cottonee, is cleanly OHKOed before Sturdy is taken into account.

The beauty in this set is that it lures much more than its intended target, thanks to Switcheroo. Foongus, Ferroseed, Munchlax, and Ponyta are among many bulky Pokemon that Cottonee can cripple by offloading its Choice Specs upon them.

Although it can be argued that this set prevents Cottonee from filling its niche as a support Pokemon, it's even more effective at handling the Fighting- and Dark-type Pokemon of the tier, thanks to its boosted Dazzling Gleam, OHKOing Mienfoo after Stealth Rock most of the time, and coming close to OHKOing Specially Defensive Vullaby.

Anyway, here's the relevant damage calc:
224 SpA Choice Specs Cottonee Hidden Power Ground vs. 0 HP / 220+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 10-12 (47.6 - 57.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

220+ SpA Amaura Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 220+ SpD Eviolite Honedge: 10-14 (47.6 - 66.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO

I guess I shamelessly stole it but some run thunderbolt over it etc.

"This is somewhat standard but nevertheless this set is still good." Still does it's job and it's still a lure :P

Foongus @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 124 HP / 160 Def / 160 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Foul Play

Not really innovative, but this is an underused move. Honedge can be very annoying for foongus once sleep clause is actived. HP Fire damages are ridiculous, so Foul Play is a very decent option. It also punishes things who trust that foongus is a free set-up with sleep clause (Mainly Zigzagoon). Also Gastly (without SP) takes like 80% on this, Pump-Small and Natu standard LO are OHKOed too with SR.

0- Atk Foongus Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Honedge: 10-14 (47.6 - 66.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO

The Avalanches wins last week's competition with an innovative Cottonee set. It's pretty rad and well thought out.

This Week's Threat:

Croagunk @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 132 HP / 28 Atk / 116 Def / 108 SpA / 116 SpD
Quiet Nature
- Drain Punch
- Sludge Bomb
- Vacuum Wave
- Knock Off

Croagunk can check a lot of threats at once, meaning that Croagunk can often find its way onto a team. Croagunk’s typing grants it resistances to Bug-, Rock-, Poison-, Grass-, Fighting-, and Dark-type moves, and its ability, Dry Skin, grants it an immunity to Water-type moves as well. Croagunk’s resistances allow it to counter and check a slew of top tier Pokemon such as Carvanha, Mienfoo, Omanyte, and Tirtouga, among others. In addition, Croagunk is not checked by Fairy-types and thus annoys teams depended on them to beat Fighters giving it the ability to pressure bulkier teams via typing.

Spritzee @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Aroma Veil
EVs: 212 HP / 196 Def / 12 SpA / 76 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Psychic
- Moonblast

Partly since Croagunk has unwisely chosen to speed tie with Spritzee, even if you don't predict Croagunk's switch in Spritzee will still win, and in fact gains the ability to check Croagunk. While Psychic faces absolutely massive competition from Aromatheraphy and Calm Mind, it does allow Spritzee to heavily damage fairly common poison switch ins like Skrelp and Foongus, outspeeding and 2HKOing the latter once it loses its Eviolite (or you get both rocks and a layer of spikes up). It does nothing to steel types, and is very much a niche option, but can be situationally useful if you need poison types gone.
12 SpA Spritzee Psychic vs. 132 HP / 116 SpD Eviolite Croagunk: 20-28 (86.9 - 121.7%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
12 SpA Spritzee Psychic vs. 124 HP / 160 SpD Eviolite Foongus: 10-12 (40 - 48%) -- 12.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
12 SpA Spritzee Psychic vs. 36 HP / 116 SpD Eviolite Skrelp: 10-12 (45.4 - 54.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Skrelp @ Eviolite
Ability: Adaptability
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 116 Def / 116 SpA / 116 SpD / 40 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Scald
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Psychic]

Not much to be said here. Croagunk is one the few viable switch-ins to Skrelp, as it's immune to one STAB and resists the other. HP [Psychic] Skrelp hits Gunk for 87% minimum damage and, with 40 spe investment, outspeeds 9 spe Gunk. I've found this set works best on teams that like Gunk gone and can deal w/ Ferro (pair it with Timburr or something).

Ok I just missclicked and destroy the post I edited before with the other lure. Sorry for being dumb

Corphish @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 236 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 0 HP
- Swords Dance
- Crabhammer
- Knock Off
- Aerial Ace

This thing destroys pretty much three of its supposed counters. You should just click Aerial Ace twice or SD on the switch.
+2 196+ Atk Life Orb Corphish Aerial Ace vs. 132 HP / 116 Def Eviolite Croagunk: 23-29 (100 - 126%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 196+ Atk Life Orb Corphish Aerial Ace vs. 116 HP / 196+ Def Eviolite Cottonee: 18-23 (81.8 - 104.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Pair this with something like Snivy or LO Carvanha, anything who like Croagunk/Cottonee/Foongus down.
