Lunala is a strong special breaker capable of muscling past special walls like Blissey. Meteor Beam in combination with Power Herb is used to OHKO Ho-Oh as well as boost its Special Attack to further its breaking ability, while Focus Blast and Psyshock can both be used to deal good damage to Blissey. Ice Beam is used to hit Ground- and Dragon-types such as Landorus-T and Zygarde and Roost offers reliable recovery to give Lunala more longevity and further deal damage to the opposing team.
Lunala enjoys having teammates that can take advantage of its breaking ability like Entei. It is vulnerable to Pokemon like Kartana and Solgaleo that can hit it with strong Dark-type coverage, because of this, Magearna makes a strong defensive partner, able to switch into both the Dark-type coverage as well as their other attacks. Lunala enjoys having hazard control users such as Landorus-T or Regieleki so that it can take advantage of its ability, giving it more opportunities to attack, in addition to its own hazard setters such as Heatran.
