NU Jellicent (QC 1/1) (GP 1/1)

[OVERVIEW]

Jellicent has a great defensive profile that grants it advantageous matchups into many top-tier threats, including Salazzle, Toxicroak, and Vaporeon. Jellicent faces stiff competition from other great Water-types in the tier like Mantine, Vaporeon, and Gastrodon, but its great utility movepool makes it quite difficult to be taken advantage of by traditional Water-type answers such as Toxicroak and Decidueye, and it beats opposing bulky Water-types head-to-head. Despite Jellicent's great defensive typing and movepool, its stats leave much to be desired, leading to it taking more damage than it'd like to and spending more turns recovering health instead of shutting down opposing walls. Jellicent also greatly suffers from being limited to only four moves. Taunt and Recover are basically mandatory, and any combination of status move and STAB move always ends up walled by something: Toxicroak walls the combination of Scald and Toxic, wheras Normal-types like Indeedee-F and bulky Dark-types like Scrafty and Guzzlord can easily shrug off Will-O-Wisp and Hex.

Taunt in conjunction with Water Absorb lets Jellicent shut down Water-types like Vaporeon, Gastrodon, and Araquanid that rely on status ailments to beat opposing bulky Water-types. Scald + Toxic lets Jellicent spread status as effectively as possible and gives it the best matchup versus opposing bulky Water-types, whereas Will-O-Wisp + Hex lets it threaten Toxicroak as well as walls like Sylveon and Vileplume. Note, however, that each combination struggles with a different group of checks to bulky Water-types. 76 Speed EVs let Jellicent outpace even Jolly Copperajah and Glastrier, both of which can be quite threatening if not burned. A Colbur Berry lets Jellicent serve as a reliable switch-in to Fighting-types like Passimian, Toxicroak, and Gallade, even if they use Knock Off. This also lets Jellicent attempt to status Dark-types like Drapion and Guzzlord once before switching out, making it easier for its partners to manage them.

Jellicent is quite proficient at shutting down defensively oriented teams, making it a great partner for Pokemon that need a little help getting past those teams like Choice Scarf Indeedee-F and Heliolisk. In return, these Pokemon do quite well into the offensive teams Jellicent struggles against. Jellicent appreciates Vileplume's defensive qualities as both a Grass- and Electric-resistant Pokemon and a sturdy Knock Off switch-in. While very good at spreading status, Jellicent's vulnerability to it from faster Pokemon it cannot use Taunt on such as Toxic Mantine and Arcanine makes clerics like Sylveon and Diancie great partners. In return, Jellicent takes on Steel- and Poison-types.

Other Options
====

Jellicent could use a Choice Specs set with the highly coveted Water Spout, and although that, Shadow Ball, and Jellicent's rainbow of coverage options seem quite scary, its poor Special Attack and Speed in a tier with plentiful Water-resistances and -immune options would prove detrimental. While the Choice Specs set may catch checks like Scrafty and Snorlax off guard, it is often outclassed by faster and more powerful Water-types like Inteleon and Starmie. Jellicent can use Strength Sap for recovery, but Recover's consistency makes it much more preferred. Cursed Body can be quite useful into Choice-locked attackers and Pokemon with a single attack, especially with Jellicent's Taunt, but Water Absorb's utility in the tier is unmatched and gives Jellicent a lot of its viability.

Checks and Counters
====

**Grass-types**: Faster Grass-types like Alolan Exeggutor, Decidueye, and Tsareena threaten an OHKO with their powerful STAB moves and also have pivoting moves to take advantage of threatening Jellicent out.

**Electric-types**: Heliolisk is immune to both of Jellicent's STAB moves, and Rotom-C easily comes in and gains momentum off Volt Switch.

**Offensive Water-types**: Jellicent may effectively shut down defensive Water-types like Vaporeon and Mantine, but it cannot effectively threaten stronger and faster ones like Inteleon and Starmie, and they both boast super effective coverage.

Despite Jellicent's great defensive typing and movepool, its stats may leave much to be desired, often taking a bit more damage than it'd like to, forcing it to Recover often and leave itself more vulnerable, while wasting precious Taunt turns. (The primary slashed moveset of Recover / Taunt / Scald / Toxic is wholly walled and beaten by Toxicroak, so you're going to need to specify Will-O + Hex.)

(That last point in the above sentence works into an addition I want here: 4MSS. Jellicent always ends up wanting to run more moves than it can, and that point should definitely be emphasized up here.)

Taunt in conjunction with Water Absorb lets Jellicent shut down passive Pokemon that rely on their Water-type attacks to do any damage like Vaporeon and Araquanid, completely walling them with Water Absorb Water-types like Vaporeon, Gastrodon, and Araquanid that rely on status ailments to beat opposing bulky Water-types. A combination of Scald and Toxic lets Jellicent spread burns and poisons very easily, all while preventing recovery moves with Taunt, making it very difficult to manage defensively, although it ends up being quite weak against Pokemon that don't mind either moves such as Toxicroak or Heliolisk. Hex and Will-O-Wisp, while only spreading burns gives Jellicent access to a powerful Ghost-type attack to hit the aforementioned Toxicroak and defensive walls like Sylveon and Vileplume a little bit harder. 76 Speed EV's let Jellicent outpace even Jolly Copperajah and Glastrier, both of which can be quite threatening if not for being burned.(Definitely still willing to discuss a different Speed benchmark because yea these aren't the most relevant Pokemon to target.) A Colbur Berry lets Jellicent serve as a reliable switchin to Fighting-types like Passimian, Toxicroak, and Gallade, even if they use Knock Off. This also lets Jellicent attempt to status Dark-types like Drapion and Guzzlord once before switching out, making it easier for its partners to manage them.

Jellicent is quite proficient at shutting down defensively-oriented teams, making it a great partner for Pokemon that need a little help getting past those teams like Choice Scarf Indeedee-F and Heliolisk, which conversely do quite well into the offensive teams Jellicent may find itself getting overwhelmed against. Jellicent appreciates Vileplume's defensive qualities as both a Grass and Electric resist while often sponging Knock Off. While very good at spreading status, Jellicent vulnerability to it from faster Pokemon it cannot Taunt such as Toxic Mantine and Arcanine make Heal Bell Clerics like Sylveon and Diancie great partners. Jellicent takes on Steel- and Poison-types for the Fairy-types as well.

Jellicent could effectively boast a Choice Specs set with the highly coveted Water Spout, and although that, Shadow Ball, and Jellicent's rainbow of coverage would make it quite scary, its poor special attack and speed in a tier with plentiful Water resistances and immunities would prove to be more detrimental than deadly.(Is there any real reason to use this over Inteleon or Starmie? I feel those two outclass offensive Jellicent too much to justify mentioning it.) Jellicent can use Strength Sap for recovery, but Recover's consistency makes it much more preferred. Cursed Body can be quite useful into Choice-locked attackers and Pokemon with a single attack, especially with Jellicent's Taunt, but Water Absorb's utility in the tier is unmatched and gives Jellicent a lot of its viability.

**Electric-types**: (Heliolisk you mention earlier, but I'd also move Rotom-C down here and just replace its mention in the Grass-types section with Alolan Exeggutor.)
