Item Clause Resources & Discussion

Hi, this is Beelzemon 2003. Here are many sample teams that my chums and I created for the Gen 2 with Item clause format. The teams were created by Earthworm, GustavoJR, IronBrony75, Jame$ J, Rage, ReeceHughes, RevivalMaya and me; FOMG also suggested some changes to make them more viable and AidedFurball, Alpha Male Pysduck, Sam Samantha, Stealth Croc and Zalarye helped us to test them. We polished the teams as much as we could, still, if you have any suggestions to improve them, feel free to share them below.

By the way, I posted a lot of replays of this meta below the samples, that way you can have an idea of how battles behave under Item clause.

Recommended Items for Gen 2 with Item Clause – Detailed List

This is a list I created to help those players who want to play Gen 2 with item clause, but don't know which items to use. OK, without further ado, let's go!

Note: Click on the name of the Items to view their review.

Excellent Items for Ubers, OU and other tiers

Here are the items that I consider every team should have.

Leftovers (still exist in Gen 8): The strongest item of the game and one of the main reasons of why Gen 2 matches last longer than those of recent gens; Item Clause prevents more than one pokémon to begin the battle with this object, so I would consider unfair to ban it. Leftovers recover 6.25 % Hit Points (rounded down) at the end of each turn. Give this item to a bulky pokémon that can take a lot of punishment like Forretress, Snorlax, Tyranitar or Venusaur.

Miracle Berry (equivalent of Lum Berry from Gen 8): The second strongest item of the meta (at least in my opinion). This item cures burn, confusion, freeze, normal poison, bad poison and paralysis.

Clerics make good use of Miracle berry because it guarantees them to switch in and use Heal Bell at least once without worrying about status conditions like Sleep or Freeze (which end their utility…and their lives!).

The item is also good for fast pokémon that don´t like any kind of bad status like Alakazam, Gengar or Starmie

Lead pokémon are also good candidates for Miracle berry since they tend to face status users at the beginning of the battle.

Finally, Miracle berry works wonders on Flail and Reversal users because it guarantees them to use those moves at least once without worrying to get frozen or paralyzed. Dodrio, Gyarados and Scyther are good using Endure + Flail/Reversal because they don´t have to worry about Spikes damage.

PRZ Cure Berry (Equivalent of Cheri berry from Gen 8): This item cures paralysis, it is good if you have two fast pokémon on your team and you already gave Miracle berry to one of them. Mewtwo, Electrode and Jolteon like this berry a lot.

Mint Berry (equivalent of Chesto Berry from Gen 8): It cures Sleep. Good for Rest users like Raikou, Suicune or Zapdos.

Good Items for Ubers

Mystery Berry (equivalent of Leppa Berry of Gen 8): When a move runs out of Power Points, this item restores five of them. You can make good use of this item with pokémon that have recovery moves like Giga Drain, Moonlight, Morning Sun and Synthesis, also, if you´re playing Ubers, it is handy for Ho-Oh´s Sacred Fire and Lugia´s Aeroblast.

Good Items for Ubers, OU and other tiers

These items are good, but not as much as the ones mentioned above. I listed the firsts eighth in alphabetical order.

Bright Powder (still exists in Gen 8): Not one of my favorites; however, good players consider it a good item. Bright Powder reduces the accuracy of all moves by 7.8125 %, so, for example, Ice Beam´s accuracy goes from 100 % to 92.1875 %. The only moves that aren´t affected by Bright Powder are Feint Attack, Swift, Vital Throw, Thunder (while raining) and any move used after Lock On or Mind Reader connected. Give this item to bulky stat users like Umbreon or Rest Talk users like Suicune or Zapdos.

Charcoal (still exists in Gen 8): Boosts the power of Fire Type moves by 10 %. Although any pokémon can use this item, many agree that Moltres is, by far, its best user. The idea is to use Sunny Day and then spam Fire attacks. Moltres hits like a truck with Sunny Day and Charcoal, just to give you an idea, if Snorlax doesn't have Leftovers, Fire Blast and Flamethrower 3 hit KO it; on the other hand, if Snorlax has Leftovers, Fire Blast 3 hit KOs it while Flamethrower 4 hit KOs it. Snorlax has high Hit Points and Special Defense, now imagine what Moltres would do to pokémon with less HPs or Special Defense, scary!

Magnet (still exists in Gen 8): Increases the power of Electric attacks by 10 %. This item works wonders on Raikou and especially on Zapdos, their Thunder and Thunderbolt deal massive damage on anything that is not immune to electricity. Since Raikou and Zapdos usually carry Rest and Sleep Talk, you can give them a Magnet without having to worry about their survivability.

Mystic Water (still exists in Gen 8): Boosts the Power of Water Type moves by 10 %. This item is more popular than Charcoal, which is saying a lot, nothing is inmune to Water, which makes it a popular attack Type. Give this item to Water pokémon with high Special Attack like Golduck, Starmie and Vaporeon.

Pink Bow and Polkadot Bow (equivalents of Silk Scarf from Gen 8): These items boost the power of Normal type moves by 10 % and since both have different names, you can use them together in the same team. Boosting the power of a move a little doesn´t sound like a big deal until you learn that you can use Polkadot Bow and Pink Bow to raise the damage of the explosive moves Self-destruct and Explosion from 400 and 500 to 440 and 550 respectively! Bomber pokémon like Cloyster and Sudowoodo almost always use their explosive moves, so why not make their last move more deadly?

Quick Claw (still exists in Gen 8): Another favorite of slow and bulky pokémon like Golem, Rhydon or Steelix. It makes any pokémon to attack first 23.4375 % of the time. Your opponent won´t like your Curselax to attack first randomly, will he?

Scope Lens (still exists in Gen 8): This item makes normal moves to have a 12.5 % chance to crit, while moves like Cross chop will crit 33.33 % of the time. Machamp is a good user of the item, also, if it uses Focus energy the odds rise: normal moves crit 25 % and Cross chop crits 50 %! This strategy is risky since everything dies fast on the Item Clause meta and you need one turn to set up, still, if you like to gamble, go for it.

Scope Lens can also be good on Lugia, which, unlike Machamp, can Recover energy with ease.

Thick Club (still exists in Gen 8): This is for Marowak or Cubone (if you´re a fan of the lonely pokémon). These two pokémon are more deadly on Item clause since most of their opponents no longer have the advantage of recovering their energy at the end of each turn. For those who don´t know, Thick club doubles the physical Attack of Cubone and Marowak from 198 and 258 to 396 and 516 respectively.

Power boosting Items (all of them still exist in Gen 8, except Pink Bow and Polkadot Bow, which were replaced by Silk Scarf): If you no longer have more good items, give your remaining pokémon items that increase the damage of their attacks by 10 % like Black Glasses or Soft Sand, something is better than nothing. Below is the list of all the power boosting items arranged by type:

Bug: Silver Powder
Dark: Black Glasses
Dragon: Dragon Scale (in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal) or Dragon Fang (in Pokémon Stadium 2)
Electric: Magnet
Fighting: Black Belt
Fire: Charcoal
Flying: Sharp Beak
Ghost: Spell Tag
Grass: Miracle Seed
Ground: Soft Sand
Ice: Never-Melt Ice
Normal: Pink Bow and Polkadot Bow
Poison: Poison Barb
Psychic: Twisted Spoon
Rock: Hard Stone
Steel: Metal Coat
Water: Mystic Water

I take this opportunity to mention that if you play on cartridge (Gold, Silver, Crystal) and want to increase the damage of your Dragon Type moves by 10 %, you have to use Dragon Scale instead of Dragon Fang. Due to a glitch, Dragon Fang is useless while Dragon Scale increases the damage of Dragon type moves instead; however, if you play on Pokémon Stadium 2, the opposite happens: Dragon Scale is useless while Dragon Fang finally increases the power of Dragon Type moves (oddly, the game still lets you choose Dragon Scale).

No Item: Thieves like Exeggutor, Gengar, Jynx and Nidoking like to begin the battle without items to guarantee the success of their move Thief. Item clause forbids your pokémon to begin the battle with repeated items but not from finishing it with repeated items, moreover, the clause also doesn´t ban to begin the battle with more than one pokémon without items. Play dirty and steal your opponents Thick Club and Leftovers.

Other Items for OU

Berserk Gene (exclusive of Gen 2): A high risk, high reward item. It confuses the user for 256 turns, but doubles it's physical Attack permanently. If you like to gamble, use this item on pokémon with high Attack like Tyranitar. A good strategy is to give this item to a fast pokémon like Jolteon and then Batton Pass the boost to a pokémon that has Bitter Berry. Be wary, though, because if you switch out, your pokémon will lose its Attack boost for the rest of the battle (it won´t be confused anymore, though).

In Pokémon Stadium 2 this item is buffed because the Confusion only lasts from 2 to 5 turns.

Burnt Berry (equivalent of Aspear Berry from Gen 8): Cures freezing. If for some reason you gave your Miracle Berry to another pokémon that wasn´t your Heal Bell user, then, give a Burnt berry to the latter. Burnt berry allows Heal bell users to switch in against Ice attacks without worrying to get frozen (just stay away of switching against pokémon that have Sleep moves); remember, once your Heal bell user gets frozen, it is practically dead.

This item also has another less popular use: it can help Fire and Water pokémon to switch in against Ice pokémon without worrying to get frozen.

Light Ball (still exists in Gen 8): This is for the Pikachu fans, it doubles the mouse´s Special Attack from the crappy 198 to the mighty 396, the highest of the format! Spam Thunderbolt, Surf and Hidden Power like if there were no tomorrow.

Good Items for Never Used

Stick (equivalent of the Leek in Gen 8): If you´re crazy enough to use Farfetch´d at least give this item to the poor duckling. Stick is better than Scope lens because normal moves crit 25 % and moves like Slash crit 50 %. If you Baton pass Focus energy to Farfetch´d the odds are 33.33 % for normal moves and 50 % for Slash (yes, that probability doesn´t change).

Good Items for Poké Cup

Gold Berry (equivalent of the Sitrus Berry of Gen 8): Restores 30 Hit points after the pokémon's energy falls below 50 %.

Excellent Items for Middle Cup

Light Ball (still exists in Gen 8): An odd electrical orb that doubles Pikachu´s Special Attack from the low 101 to the powerful 202, the highest of the format! Spam Thunderbolt, Surf and Hidden Power Ice like if there were no tomorrow.

Excellent Items for Little Cup and Little Cup Ubers

If you´re playing Little Cup with Item clause these objects are considered musts, since they recover from 10 to 30 Hit Points and pokémon have between 16 and 44 HPs in that meta. Basically, these items give a second life to Little Cup pokémon.

Berry (equivalent of Oran berry from Gen 8): Restores 10 Hit Points after the pokémon's energy falls below 50 %.

Berry Juice (still exists in Gen 8): Restores 20 Hit Points after the pokémon's energy falls below 50 %.

Gold Berry (equivalent of the Sitrus Berry of Gen 8): Restores 30 Hit points after the pokémon's energy falls below 50 %. This item IS allowed on Little Cup and Little Cup Ubers when players enforce Item clause.

Thick Club (still exists in Gen 8): This item is for Cubone, one of the best pokémon of Little Cup and Little Cup Ubers. The Thick Club is a bone of some sort that doubles Cubone's physical Attack from 14 to 28, which is the highest Attack of the format barring Bersek Gene users.

Good Items for Little Cup Ubers

Lucky Punch (was discontinued in Gen 8): Makes Chansey´s attacks to crit 25 % of the time. If you Baton pass the effects of Focus energy to Chansey, the odds rise to 33.33 %. This item only works when held by Chansey.

Lucky Punch can be used in OU and Ubers too, but since Chansey is considered bad there, I consider that this item is only viable on Little Cup Ubers.

Bad items for Ubers, OU and other tiers

These are considered bad; however, games tend to change, so maybe someone will discover a good way to use them in the future.

Bitter Berry (equivalent of Persim berry from Gen 8): Cures Confusion. It is recommended if your pokémon has moves like Outrage or Trash.

Focus Band (still exists in Gen 8): When your pokémon is hit by an attack that would have caused it to faint, this item activates and allows it to survive with 1 HP; however, the success rate is very low (11.71875 %). If Focus band succeeds in preventing your pokémon from dying from the first hit of a multi strike move like Twineedle, it will receive no damage from the following hits in that turn. Focus band also works against Future sight, but fails against damage caused by the Confusion status.

Ice Berry (equivalent of Rawst Berry from Gen 8): Cures burns. This item has a small niche in Ubers where burns from Sacred fire are common. Give it to heavy hitters like Golem, Mew, Rhydon, Snorlax or Tyranitar. I once faced a cocky Ho-Oh who dared to stay against my Tyranitar to burn it, the bird succeeded; however, my Tyranitar healed immediately and killed it with Rock Slide, needless to say, Ho-Oh was not very proud of its joke.

In OU this item is not good; however, you can use it to help your Dragon, Rock and Water pokémon to switch in against Fire pokémon without worrying to get burned.

King's Rock (still exists in Gen 8): Has an 11.71875 % probability of flinching the target, too bad that it doesn't work with moves that cause flinch on their own like Rock slide.

Metal Powder (still exists in Gen 8): According to Bulbapedia, this item increases Ditto's Defense and Special Defense by 50 % even when it is transformed; however, recent tests done in Pokémon Stadium 2 revealed that the icrease is lost once Ditto transforms.

PSN Cure Berry (equivalent of Pecha Berry from Gen 8): Cures Normal Poison and Bad Poison. Maybe it's not that bad considering that Toxic is common in Gen 2.

Analysis of the Item Clause Formats

Introduction to Gen 2 with Item Clause

Gen 2 is one of the most hated generations of Pokémon by two simple reasons: everything lives forever and battles last forever. Unlike modern gens, the strongest pokémon of Gen 2 are extremely hard to take down, also, battles are long (there have been some that have lasted 1,000 turns, literally!).

When Gen 2 came out in 2000, players immediately realized the game was stally and defensive. The Metal Generation was so slow that the Game Freak people did everything they could to prevent future Pokémon games to be as stally as Gen 2: they changed the EV system, changed the mechanics of moves like Sleep Talk and prevented the Gen 3 games to be compatible with the Gen 1 and Gen 2 games.

Many would blame Game Freak for making Gen 2 a Stallfest (after all, they did the games), while others may blame the players. In my opinion Gen 2's stally nature was anyone´s fault, to begin with, it is impossible for the programmers to foresee how the game will be played, moreover, players are free to play in any way they want to maximize their chances to win, be it stally or not.

Like Gen 1, Gen 2 was short lived, it only lasted two years, five months and one day. As I said before, during its heyday, players knew Gen 2 was stally, some accepted it´s stally nature, some used Item clause, some banned all items, while others simply left the game.

What is Item clause?

Item Clause is a rule that has been used in official Nintendo tournaments since Gen 2, the rule has also seen use in some “unofficial” tournaments like those organized by the Mexican community of Pokémon (who are sometimes sponsored by Nintendo).

The clause consists of the following: all pokémon in your party must begin the battle with different items. It is allowed to begin with 2 items that have the same effect but different name, e.g.: Pink bow and Polkadot bow in Gen 2 or Rawst berry and Pumkin berry in Gen 3. It is also allowed to have up to 6 pokémon without items at the beginning of the battle. Finally, it is allowed to use Thief to steal an item that another of your pokémon already has.

Differences with new gens

When players of recent gens try to use Item clause they get discouraged by some reasons, firstly, many items have different names (for example, Chesto berry is called Mint berry); secondly, some items have different mechanics (e.g. Light ball only doubles Pikachu´s Special Attack); finally, many items don´t exist (e.g.: Choice specs, Choice scarf, Focus sash, Eviolite, etc.).

The most common reason given by some players to not try Item clause is that Gen 2 only has one good item (Leftovers); however, this is where the magic of Gen 2 with Item clause lies: you have to try to win with the “crappy” items you are forced to use.

What’s the difference between Normal Gen 2 and Gen 2 with Item clause?

In Normal Gen 2 you are allowed to repeat items as much as you want while in Gen 2 with Item clause you aren´t. This small difference changes everything. In Normal Gen 2 all pokémon have Leftovers, which makes everything hard to kill to the point you could say all pokémon are immortal; however, in Gen 2 with Item clause, since only one pokémon can have Leftovers, the other five become incredibly feeble and die very fast. In short, Gen 2 with Item clause is a fast version of Gen 2.

How does Gen 2 with Item clause look like?

Gen 2 with Item clause has many similarities with Gen 1 (except that luck is not as omnipresent like in Gen 1), games are fast and furious, most items are volatile (which means that they can only be used once) and EVERYTHING dies fast. The game is way faster than normal Gen 2. In this format, the worst thing that can happen is that a match last 100 turns (which is something that almost never happens); while this sounds bad, it is nothing compared to playing 1,000 turns in normal Gen 2, also, some Gen 1 games last 100 turns too (like those which involve Chansey dittos).

If you want to have a better idea of how Item Clause games are, I invite you to watch the replays that are at the top of this thread (they are below the sample teams). There are LOTS of replays of OU, as well as replays of crazy formats like Little Cup and Middle Cup, of course, there are also replays of Ubers.

Should I play Gen 2 with Item clause?

In my opinion, Gen 2 with Item clause is for you if:

-You and your friends haven´t played Gen 2 before.

-You like Gen 1.

-You like Pokémon Stadium 2.

-You play Normal Gen 2, but want to try something different.

By the way, Gen 2 with Item clause is strongly recommended if you´re going to organize a small or large tournament of the Gen 2 games and you and the other players will use the original cartridges or the Virtual Console version of the games, it is also highly recommended that all games have a timer for the turns and one for the matches (e.g. 1 minute per turn and 30 minutes per game). If you don´t enforce Item clause and if you don´t use a timer, it is very likely that all games will end when one of the players’ Gameboys run out of batteries, on the other hand, if both have their Gameboys powered by an AC adapter (or if both are using Pokémon Stadium 2) things can get worse, because a 1,000 turns match can last up to 16 hours and 40 minutes (assuming each turn lasts one minute)!!!

All people have played Normal Gen 2 since 18 years ago, why should I play with Item clause?

To begin with, that´s not true, Item clause has been used since Gen 2 came out in September 2000. Pokémon Stadium 2, Nintendo Tournaments and some unofficial tournaments used the clause during Gen 2´s glory days. On the other hand, you and your friends are free to play in any way you like, be it the professional players like it or not.

It is true that Normal Gen 2 has also being played since the launch of the games and that it is the more “popular” way to play Gen 2 nowadays, but that doesn´t mean you and your friends have to play it if you don´t want.

To understand better what I´m trying to say I´ll give you the example of one game: Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 (aka Smash 64). That game came out more than one year before Pokémon Gold and Silver and during 15 years a stage called Hyrule Castle was allowed in tournaments. On 2014 players debated if the stage was fair or not, since it was very large and allowed camping and stalling. Some players argued that the stage couldn´t be banned because the tournament rules had allowed it for 15 years and the change would go against the nostalgia of the game. At the end, players reached a consensus of banning Hyrule Castle. As you can see, tournament rules of old games can change as long as players give justified reasons to enforce those changes.

In short, if you and your friends want to play Gen 2 with Item clause, go for it!

I enjoy Normal Gen 2, should I stop playing it and use Item clause?

No. If you like Normal Gen 2, you don´t have to quit playing it. The intention of this article it´s not to force players to play in a way they don´t like, but to give them more options to play the good old Gen 2.

Is Gen 2 with Item clause fun?

Of course it is! Games are fast and entertaining and most strategies that work in Normal Gen 2 are still useful; however, since all pokémon are frail, you have less time to pull them. Stealing Leftovers and good items like Thick Club continues to be a thing, surprises are everywhere and finally, some bad pokémon improve their performance (which compacts the tiers a bit).

Again, if you want to know how Item clause matches are, I recommend you to watch the replays that are at the top of this thread (they are below the sample teams).

The original Poké Cup tournament of Gen II took place in Japan, it began in November 2000 and finished in January 2001. The first phase consisted of 11 local tournaments that took place in different prefectures of the country, the winners then advanced to a national tournament where they competed to determine who was the best player of Japan. For unknown reasons Daisuke Abiko, the champion of Yamagata, couldn't attend the national event so he had to be substituted by the runner-up Kazuya Matsuda. Below are the results of the national tournament:

Champion: Yuki Sato
Runner-up: Akira Nakamura

1.Raikou @ scope lens
Thunder, hp ice, rest, sleep talk
Talk kou just aces no lefties, hardly slows him down at all

2. Starmie @ miracle Berry
Rapid spin, psychic, surf, recover
Just has good stamina with recover and no lefties, seems like spike damage could stack up fast in this format so i'd prob want to run a spinner.

3. Snorlax @ Leftovers
Lovely Kiss, curse, double edge, rest
I'd always put leftovers on Lax unless it was a sleep talker tbh, he really hurts without them. Sleep, lefties, curse just centralizes the MVP on the poke carrying leftovers

4. Skarmory @ mint berry
Drill peck, whirlwind, rest, thief
Phazer; minty rests, clears the item to hopefully steal something good. Toxic would prob be better than thief but hey, gotta do something to keep with the item theme.

5. Umbreon @ mystery Berry
Charm, toxic, pursuit, moonlight
Super bulky ghost/psychic hunter, seems well suited for no leftovers with recovery & pp boost for moonlight.

6. Machamp @ black belt
Curse, cross chop, rest, sleep talk
Because power, status repair + recovery. Definitely needing Curse on this one as its the Nidoking check and kings Earthquake can 3 shot when champ doesn't have leftovers

Not sure Gyarados, I´ve used Dragon Scale many times on Gen 2 but haven´t tested the damage. We can do a test when you´re available.

Real men use berserk gene. BG Jolt passing +2 attack to a Machamp with Lum (or bitter berry for that matter) can be *brutal*.

In terms of “luck” items: focus band (likely a good source of redundancy for reversal users, probably also good for sleep talkers who can take one lucky turn and turn it into a full heal) and king’s rock (more niche, but fast pokes with compatible moves could use it to flinch a snorlax to death... maybe) are worth remembering.

I like the idea; I thought for some time it would be intersting to implement item clause in gen 2 to speed it up. That replay doesn't seem to work though? Thats not the most exciting team I posted compared to what you guys came up with but thats prob where i'd start til i got a feel. The only thing I'd be tempted to try & fit on some of those teams is giga rain on forretress; seems like a cool idea to keep his hp up. We'll have to have a bot on showdown sometime :)

I´d be happy if we had a separate ladder for Gen 2 with item clause, that way players would be free to choose their prefered way to play the god old metallic generation. We´ve had tournaments of that format on the Ruins of Alph chat sometimes and players have enjoyed them a lot. By the way, item clause does make Gen 2 games WAY FASTER. In normal Gen 2 I´ve seen games of 1000 turns while on Item clause they can last up to 100 turns (however, that´s a rare event). Of course, any Gen can be stally, I have a friend that told me he once saw a Gen 7 game that lasted 3000 turns!!! :o

Lavos

Banned deucer.
There are some fundamental problems with this format that make it basically unplayable.

As it stands, GSC OU holds a tenuous balance in terms of how its various threats interact with one another. Snorlax is unquestionably at the top of the heap, but many Pokemon exist that can check its various sets - however, all of these Pokemon are highly susceptible to chip damage, which adds up quickly when only 1 team member can hold Leftovers. In the case of a standard stall setup where your curselax checks are Skarm and Ttar, regardless of which of them is holding lefties, you're going to get chipped down by +1 DEdge over time plus the coverage move of choice, and there's nothing you can do to prevent that. Similarly, things like Exeggutor would be borderline Uber if not for the ubiquity of Leftovers, with the item itself enabling Zap and Kou to survive 3 Psychics, for instance. Nidoking in particular stands out to me as something which is largely checked by the presence of Leftovers and is an absolute terror otherwise. This problem is compounded by the lack of longevity on both Spikes users, which you probably don't want carrying your only Leftovers, meaning Spikes are going to be played even more aggressively than they are in OU, and will likely be up on both sides in most battles. As a result, every single switch is punished twice as hard as it should be, rendering common defensive strategies null and enhancing the already overbearing presence of mixed attackers and other fast, powerful Pokemon that don't require stat boosts to sweep. Stall is obviously trashed, but even offensive teams suffer. The standard Steelix, a staple of boom teams, can only gain recovery through Leftovers, usually via phazing. In most cases you'll want lefties on Lax, so Steelix's number of switch-ins becomes highly limited as it eats Spikes damage plus residual chip, forcing it to blow up way sooner than you'll normally see. In almost every case imaginable, the presence of Leftovers is the glue that holds GSC OU together, and by limiting its application, you necessarily dissolve the foundation of what makes GSC so great.

You may read all this and ask "ok, but why is this necessarily a bad thing? Maybe GSC w/item clause is radically different from GSC OU as we know it, but that doesn't make it bad." I'll invite you to play a few games of the format yourself and witness firsthand how atrocious it is. The sample stall teams are garbage, so ignore them. Build your own team (or steal team 2) centered around Explosion, which is the best strategy beyond a doubt, and watch as every single game devolves into a mindless spin of the roulette wheel. Explosions are firing left and right, you're sending in mixed sweeper after mixed sweeper, and a single miss/crit/freeze/etc. will swing the game completely out of control. The entire metagame is like a boom team mirror in OU but with way more random bullshit - the presence of items like BrightPowder, Mint Berry, and Quick Claw make for a miserable experience where you can never be sure if you're outplaying your opponent or simply falling into an RNG-laden trap. I played about a dozen games of this format, and the only good thing I got out of my experience was an even greater appreciation for GSC OU as it stands now.

In conclusion, I fucking hate Item Clause GSC. If you enjoy this tier, you're an agent of Satan.

Lavos, I talked with some friends recently and discovered something interesting, you have a second account where you´re called The pirate97. We fought today in a Gen 2 Item clause tournament. You won your first battle and were having a great time with a tier you supposedly hated, then, you fought me on semi finals and were also having a good time until I won because your Snorlax missed 3 Fire Blasts in a row. After your loss, your attitude changed drastically from enjoying an unknown meta to hating it and insulting me, you also called Sam Samantha "idiot". At the beggining I acted relaxed and ignored your comments; however, after a while I began to act childish too and attacked you. Anyway, I´m disappointed to see that a loss made you lose your control to the point of writing an elaborate post to satanize this meta.

About my attitude, I want to apologize for being rude to you even if I did it to counter your hostility, I should have understood that you were angry for having bad luck and that fighting insults with insults would have only worsened things.

By the way, I once lost Grand Finals on a Gen 2 OU tournament due to bad luck if that makes you happy; however, I didn´t insult my opponent after the fight, I accepted my loss, got angry for a bit and moved on with my life.

Regarding the meta, I have played Gen 2 with Item clause MANY times and have even won 10 tournaments of it. I love Item clause 1 million times more than normal Gen 2 and have some friends that also enjoy the format. Also, I think you didn´t read well the title of the thread: it says "Item Clause GSC Resources & Discussion", it doesn´t say "Gen 2 is horrible, let´s make a revolution and force everybody to play with Item clause". My true intention is to offer players more options to play Gen 2 and let them decide if they like Normal, Item clause, Anything goes or whatever they want.

Thanks for reading my post and have a good day.

PD: I included the link of our fight below as evidence of what I said here.

Haha so if we get a tourney going Lavos is IN! He's quite well known for his unprovoked angry rants Beelzemon, he b#tched at me for an hour straight one day for using 2 electrics I wouldn't pay much attention to it. Personally i'd love to give this a go sometime.

Here´s the link to the replay I tried to share with you yesterday:

replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen2ou-746108352

It´s a fun match of Gen 2 with Item clause, hope you enjoy it.

I have always been interested in trying this metagame. I think the power of Spikes and the lack of passive recovery will lead to Rest (especially without Sleep Talk) becoming less viable, which should also make strategies like Screens, Toxic Protect and fast offensive Pokemon more viable. I think it's quite possible for strategies other than Explosion to be strong. Hopefully this gets a chance on the monthly ladder soon.

That said, I understand why people would not want to play this over regular GSC OU, because if they are coming to play Gen 2 in the first place they are probably looking for the (at least slightly) more nuanced gameplay offered by the presence of constant passive recovery.

BTW, is there any reason the two item clause threads are separate?

I respect your opinion, but did you read which were the real reasons of why Lavos wrote those arguments against Item clause? It was because I won against him in a Gen 2 Item clause tournament, check the above posts, I even pasted the link of the replay.

You just use Normal Gen 2 OU, if you discover someone repeated an item during the fight, he or she loses in that moment. On tournaments, mods can actually enforce the rule, so if you try to use 6 pokémon with Leftovers the system doesn´t allow you to fight.

That's cool. I still think his arguments are good and valid, and item clause is a terrible idea.

Recommended Items for Gen 2 with Item clause – Short list

This is a short version of the list I published last week. OK, without further ado, let´s go!

Leftovers (still exist in Gen 7): Recover 6.25 % HPs at the end of each turn. Give this item to bulky pokémon like Snorlax, Steelix, Skarmory or Blissey.

Miracle Berry (equivalent of Lum berry in Gen 7): Cures burn, confusion, freeze, normal poison, bad poison and paralysis. Good for lead pokémon, since they tend to face opponents with status moves like Spore, Toxic or Confuse Ray. The item is also good for fast and versatile pokémon like Starmie, Alakazam and Gengar.

Prz Cure Berry (equivalent of Cheri berry in Gen 7): Cures paralysis. If you already used Miracle Berry, use Prz Cure Berry on a fast pokémon like Electrode or Jolteon.

Mint Berry (equivalent of Chesto berry in Gen 7): Cures sleep. This item is for Rest users like Zapdos, Suicune or Raikou.

Polkadot Bow and Pink Bow (equivalents of Silk scarf in Gen 7): Both items increase the damage of Normal type moves by 10 %. These items are recommended for pokémon with Self-Destruct and Explosion like Cloyster and Sudowoodo. You can use both items in the same team without breaking Item clause.

Thick Club (still exists in Gen 7): For Marowak, it doubles its physical Attack up to 516.

Bright powder (still exists in Gen 7): For defensive stat users like Umbreon, it reduces the accuracy of all moves by 7.8 % (except Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, Swift, Faint Attack and Vital throw).

Quick claw (still exists in Gen 7): Makes any pokémon to move first 23.4 % of the time. Use it on slow resistant pokémon like Curselax, Golem or Steelix.

Scope lens (still exists in Gen 7): Increases the chance of landing a Critical hit by one stage. This item is for pokémon with high Critical hit ratio moves like Cross chop Machamp.

Light Ball (still exists in Gen 7): If you´re a Pikachu fan, give this item to the mouse, it doubles its Special Attack up to 396 (second only to Mewtwo).

No item: Thief users like Nidoking, Gengar or Jynx prefer to begin the battle without items to guarantee the success of said move. Item clause doesn´t ban having more than one pokémon without items at the beginning of the battle, so you have to take that into account if you want to have more than one thief in your team.

Power boosting items (most of them still exist in Gen 7): If you run out of good items, use items that boost the power of certain moves by 10 % (like Charcoal or Magnet), something´s better than nothing. Below is the list of all the power boosting items arranged by type:

Power boosting items

Bug: Silver powder.
Dark: Black glasses.
Dragon: Dragon scale (in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal) or Dragon fang (in Pokémon Stadium 2).
Electric: Magnet.
Fighting: Black belt.
Fire: Charcoal.
Flying: Sharp beak.
Ghost: Spell tag.
Grass: Miracle seed.
Ground: Soft sand.
Ice: Nevermelt ice
Normal: Pink bow and Polkadot bow.
Poison: Poison barb.
Psychic: Twisted spoon.
Rock: Hard stone.
Steel: Metal coat.
Water: Mystic water.
