Gen 1 Hitmonlee (1v1)

[OVERVIEW]

Despite its pitiful defenses and typing, Hitmonlee finds itself as a niche but quite useful Pokemon in RBY 1v1, thanks to its strong Attack, respectable Speed, and incredibly important matchup against Snorlax, the best Pokemon in the tier.

[SET]
name: Here’s the Kicker (Offensive)
move 1: High Jump Kick
move 2: Jump Kick
move 3: Rolling Kick
move 4: Meditate / Substitute

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========

High Jump Kick is one of Hitmonlee's signature moves and its strongest Fighting-type STAB move, letting it hit Snorlax, Kabutops, Chansey, and Lapras for massive damage. Jump Kick, while not as strong, is slightly more accurate, which helps with securing KOs after a High Jump Kick, especially against Snorlax. Rolling Kick allows Hitmonlee to attempt to flinch its way through slower Pokemon like Rhydon. Both Meditate and Substitute are used to punish a Counter from Chansey or Snorlax, Meditate is preferred for Reflect Chansey, while Substitute helps more against Snorlax.

The main draw of Hitmonlee is how amazing it is against Snorlax and Chansey, two of the best Pokemon in the tier. Because of this, it is best to run teammates that don't like facing Snorlax and Chansey such as Alakazam, Jolteon, Zapdos, Rhydon, Snorlax, and Tauros. These Pokemon can help Hitmonlee in return by beating any threats that might do well against it such as the many Psychic-type Pokemon in the tier.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Counter can potentially be used to improve odds in Normal- and Fighting-type matchups like Machamp, opposing Hitmonlee, and Persian.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tauros**: Tauros is faster than Hitmonlee and can find easy 2HKOs with Body Slam and Hyper Beam.

**Rhydon**: While Hitmonlee can attempt to flinch it with Rolling Kick, it is not very likely, and Rhydon’s Earthquake is a 2HKO. Hitmonlee’s Rolling Kick is a 3HKO, and High Jump Kick has a very low chance to 2HKO Rhydon, so the matchup is in Rhydon's favor.

**Pokemon Hitmonlee Cannot Hit Super Effectively**: Hitmonlee matches up really poorly against every strong special attacker due to its abysmal bulk, and without any super effective damage, Hitmonlee struggles to break through them. It particuarly struggles against Pokemon with Psychic- and Flying-type moves like Alakazam, Starmie, Exeggutor, Slowbro, Jynx, Gengar and Zapdos.

[OVERVIEW]

Hitmonlee is your go-to Fighting-type option in RBY 1v1. It carves out its niche thanks to its strong 120 Attack, respectable 87 Speed, and one of the most unique match-up spreads in the game. It is not your go to anymore, Hitmonlee's main role is to be the Pokemon that can beat Lax the best, but it doesn't have really much else going for it. Also mention Hitmonlee's frailty.

High Jump Kick is one of Hitmonlee's signature moves, and its strongest STAB move of choice, letting you hit Snorlax, Kabutops, and Lapras mention Chansey for massive damage, and Jump Kick, while not as strong, its slightly higher accuracy helps you with securing KOs after a High Jump Kick, especially against Snorlax. Rolling Kick allows Hitmonlee to attempt to flinch its way through slower Pokemon like Rhydon and Sandslash. Sandslash is not that relevant, and you'd have to flinch it 4 times in a row to win. Meditate is utilized for breaking through Reflect Chansey while Substitute can punish any attempts to poison Hitmonlee or predicting a Counter from Snorlax. The main use of the last moveslot is to get around a potential Counter. Meditate also works against Chansey if they click Reflect. Also mention that using Substitute against Snorlax can be risky, since you'll be in Hyper Beam range if they attack.

The main draw of Hitmonlee is always gonna be how amazing it is against Snorlax and Chansey, being some of the best Pokemon in the tier. Because of this, you'd prefer to run teammates that don't like facing Snorlax, like Alakazam, Jolteon, Zapdos, and Jynx, or Chansey, like Rhydon, Snorlax, and Tauros. Include why these Pokemon benefit Hitmonlee and help cover its weaknesses. The best trait Hitmonlee can carry is its presence in preview. Preview is obviously important for any 1v1 tier, and because most teams run Snorlax and/or Chansey, it can deter the opponent from clicking them and allow you to click stronger Pokemon, like the ones previously mentioned. Mentioning Preview in an analysis feels out of place, and also some of these points are fairly self explanitory.

Counter can potentially be used to improve odds in Normal- and Fighting-type match-ups like Machamp, opposing Hitmonlee, and Persian.

Body Slam can help to fish for paralysis and attempt to paraflinch through Pokemon like Jolteon, Raichu and Articuno. Body Slam only gives you a tiny chance in these matchups, its not worth running.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tauros**: Tauros is always gonna be faster than Hitmonlee, and it doesn't need to use Body Slam to guarantee an OHKO with Hyper Beam. Make it more clear that Tauros 2HKOes Hitmonlee with one of Blizzard, EQ, Fire Blast, or Leer into Hyper Beam, though don't list the options.

**Rhydon**: While it was mentioned that Hitmonlee can attempt to flinch it with Rolling Kick, it is not very likely and Earthquake is a 2HKO while Rolling Kick is a 3HKO. Mention that HJK is a roll to 3HKO

**Every single Pokemon it cannot hit supereffectively**: It matches up really poorly against every strong special attacker, and without any supereffective damage, Hitmonlee struggles to beat anything, especially against Pokemon with Psychic- or Flying-type moves like Alakazam, Starmie, Exeggutor, Slowbro, Jynx, Gengar and Zapdos. Mention Hitmonlee's frailty.

Both Meditate and Substitute are used to predict a Counter from Chansey or Snorlax, Meditate can be preferred for Reflect Chansey while Substitute punish any attempts to Toxic Hitmonlee.
Substitute blocking Toxic isn't really relevant for Hitmonlee, instead, its preferred for Counter Snorlax since after a Meditate, it still doesn't OHKO.

this final sentence sounds a bit odd to me. The phrase “come in on” makes it sound (to me) like these pokes are switching in to hitmonlee, which obviously isn’t the case in 1v1. Perhaps a better phrase would be “do well against Hitmonlee such as…”

yeah I get the idea and technically speaking I’m pretty sure it was correct, just in context with how analyses are written that phrase tends to invoke switching

rhydon has around a 60% chance to win vs hitmonlee considering misses from rolling kick and the such.

snorlax is the best pokemon in the tier, so that was added in overview as asked.
