Hippowdon
[SET]
name: Physical Wall
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Slack Off
move 4: Whirlwind
item: Leftovers
ability: Sand Stream
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
nature: Impish
[SET COMMENTS]
Hippowdon's good physical bulk and lack of exploitable weaknesses allow it to switch in on threatening attackers like Zacian-C and Excadrill. STAB Earthquake hits quite hard, OHKOing Excadrill and 2HKOing Zacian-C, while Whirlwind allows Hippodown to phaze out boosted Pokemon like Corviknight. Providing both Stealth Rock support and automatic sandstorm thanks to Sand Stream makes Hippowdon more useful outside of switching in on the aforementioned attackers. However, as a Ground-type, Hippowdon faces competition from Quagsire, who has Unaware to ignore Swords Dance boosts from Zacian-C, who could heavily weaken Hippowdon with a boosted Play Rough. Due to the passivity of Hippowdon, Gothitelle can easily switch in to Trick it a Choice Scarf and nullify Hippowdon's defensive utility, leaving it very vulnerable to Taunt later in the game. Additionally, Hippowdon's lack of mixed bulk means it can't take powerful special attacks, like Life Orb Dynamax Cannon from Eternatus. Teammates like Sand Rush Excadrill or Zacian-C help cover Hippowdon's weaknesses to special attackers with their great Speed and ability to revenge kill many of those threats. Excadrill makes for an ideal partner thanks to Hippowdon's Sand Stream, while Hippowdon checks some Pokemon that may threaten Excadrill, like an opposing Excadrill. Zacian-C makes for a good wallbreaker to get past common defensive Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Corviknight, which Hippowdon is unable to deal with due to its passive nature.
