Live from Other Metagames, on the Smogon forums, this is Pokemon's...Got...Talent! Here's your host, nv!

Thank you, thank you! Welcome to "Got Talent?" a unique metagame where the (contest) conditions of moves now determine the stat a move uses for damage calculation. What this means is each condition happens to correlate with a stat, allowing for some crazy, fresh new strategies that can win over or surprise the opponent!
Rules:

Mechanic: Moves are now separated into their contest conditions. Each move now uses the stat correlating with its contest condition for damage calculation.
Clauses: OU Clauses
Bans: OU Banlist with the following bans:
Shuckle
Speed Boost
Unbans:
Aegislash
Hoopa-Unbound

Strategy:

There are 5 contest conditions (Cool, Tough, Beautiful, Clever, and Cute) and every move happens to be classified into these 5 groups. Each condition also happens to correlate with a specific stat (minus HP), meaning Cool = Attack, Tough = Defense, Beautiful = Special Attack, Clever = Special Defense, and Cute = Speed.

Q&A:

Q: How does damage calculation work?
A: Scald, a Tough move, coming from Slowbro now uses its invested base 110 Defense stat, rather than its uninvested base 100 Special Attack stat for damage calculation.

Q: Are status moves affected by this new mechanic?
A: No as they don't cause any damage to the opponent in the "attacking" sense lol.

Q: What about setup moves?
A: Setup moves will work as normal; however, setup moves such as Iron Defense and Amnesia will boost Tough and Clever moves respectively, allowing for a plethora of new setup options, giving even more creativity.

Q: Does the Physical/Special split stay intact?
A: Yes. Even if a special move uses the Pokemon's Attack stat (Dark Pulse or Vacuum Wave for example), it will still hit the opponent's Pokemon on its Special Defense stat.

Q: How does Foul Play work with it being a Clever move?
A: The mechanic doesn't change as the description of the move itself is "The user turns the target's power against it. The higher the target's Attack stat, the greater the move's power."

Q: How does Unaware work? Does it still block the offensive boosts from the new boosting moves?
A: Unfortunately, no. Unaware only ignores the boosts to Cool or Beautiful moves while only ignoring the defensive boosts to a Pokemon's Defense or Special Defense, meaning that the most common boosters can power through Unaware Pokemon.

Q: Where can I play this?
A: Thanks to urkerab, it is playable on the ROM server!

THIS IS HEAT nv! Offense is going to be dominant (i think) funny thing i found

Impish Nature

Shuckle with that base 230 attack :^). So Shuckle is like a bulky sweeper. EQ and Rock Slide are tough, and Knock Off is Clever which takes Shuckle's legendary 230 Defence / 230 Special Defence to its attack. Shell Smash is to boost the defences (or toughness) and then sweep while having more bulk.

The Xatu Warrior
im just going to repost what i said in the main conversation for convinience sake:

lmao speed boost ninjask sounds insane. especially with a choice scarf oh my lord bug bite and return gain DESTRUCTIVE wallbreaking power.
+1 252+ Atk Choice Band(actually is scarf) Ninjask Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 91-107 (27.2 - 32%) -- 58.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
doesnt sound like much at first...but then you realize that skarm is constantly pressured...as
+3 252+ Atk Choice Band Ninjask Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 151-178 (45.2 - 53.2%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
the more it roost stalls, the more it cant fight back.if only jask had the bulk to tank 140 def iron heads (never thought id say that)

in other news...cotton guard furfrou sounds RIDICULOUS. i mean look at this:
+3 252+ Atk Huge Power Furfrou Wild Charge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 374-440 (111.9 - 131.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+3 252+ Atk Huge Power Furfrou Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 246-289 (58.5 - 68.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+3 252+ Atk Huge Power Furfrou Wild Charge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Sableye: 202-238 (66.4 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
not to mention this makes it STUPIDLY bulky to anything hoping to hit its defense. not to mention its last move can be snarl to hit spc def walls even HARDER.

tbh, stall sounds like its job is both easy, and hard. it can now have some insane offensive power...BUT it also fears mons with "colourful" coverage. as stuff like snarl furfrou can be used to get past the few walls that...well...wall it since it still hits the opponents spc def.

This is a pretty neat idea actually. Not too long ago I was wondering what would happen if Contest stats had any effect on normal battles, and this is a pretty interesting spin to put on it I think.

Few things I found:

Mega Diancie seems like it's buffed a bit as its Diamond Storm and Explosion are Beautiful moves, meaning that it's no longer forced to go mixed if it wants good damage output from those moves (or rather, Diamond Storm in particular as it lacks Power Gem), therefore increasing its overall damage capacity. (Hidden Power is a Clever move though which is a bit unfortunate if it wants to hit Steels that aren't weak to Earth Power hard)

Close Combat is now counter-intuitive to spam as it deals damage off the user's Defense stat and lowers it at the same time. It's still a decent move to use if you need a one- or two-time Fighting move to hit hard with (though at that point, you might as well use Superpower even though it still suffers from that problem), though its distribution isn't oriented towards Pokémon with high Defense so it might be hard to find a good user.

Coil Zygarde seems neat. It has Dragon Rush and Earthquake for STABs that hit off its Defense stat (21 base higher than its Attack, for reference), as well as (potentially) Crunch and Stone Edge hitting off the same stat for coverage. Unfortunately, Extreme Speed still uses Attack, but it shouldn't be that much of an issue as Coil also still boosts Attack.

Oh, and Hyperspace Fury is a Tough move and so hits off of Defense. rip physical Hoopa-U

While this isn't particularly relevant as it's exclusive to an Uber, Psystrike is essentially just a physical move now as it uses Attack to calculate damage and it hits on the opponent's Defense.

also Ice Shard and Icicle Crash are both Beautiful moves, Knock Off is Clever, and Low Kick is Tough. rip weavile (there's still Night Slash I guess but Weavile in general looks to be pretty bad here)

(more on the way eventually, maybe)

Oh boy! Such a creative and fun metagame.

One of the best ideas that I've come up with so far is weather, and specifically the speed-boosting weather abilities combined with Cute moves. For instance, here are some good examples:

• Stoutland + Sand Rush + Return
• Venusaur + Chlorophyll + Grass Knot / Knock Off
• Sawsbuck + Chlorophyll + Return / Grass Knot

In general, there's a great deal of potential with Cute moves:

• Tailwind looks really fun, effectively giving a free Swords Dance/Nasty Plot for a few turns (unfortunately the screens don't work in this same way)
• Baton Passing with Ninjask, or Scolipede if the former gets banned but Speed Boost as a whole somehow doesn't.
• Slurpuff + Unburden + Play Rough
• Accelgor + Unburden + Bug Bite / U-turn
• Hitmonlee + Unburden + Fake Out + Normal Gem, depending on how those mechanics work
• Sceptile + Unburden + Grass Knot

Of course, the main problem with all of these strategies is the insanely limited Cute movepool. Many of these Pokemon have marginal coverage and an inability to do much of anything besides hit hard with these single moves. It's for this reason that I expect Pokemon like Furfrou and Mega Altaria with Cotton Guard + Tough moves to be significantly more effective.

On an unrelated note: it'll be fun to see if Regigigas and Archeops get any use, given that they don't necessarily have to make use of the moves affected by their abilities.

Just going to make a comment about this: Oddly enough, (according to Serebii, at least) the offensive movepool with the Cute condition was actually more diverse back in Gen 4. More specifically, this includes the likes of Aqua Tail (good coverage that's available on a lot of Pokémon), Shadow Claw (similar to Aqua Tail, though it's weaker), Leaf Storm (essentially a 140 BP move which, under the rules of this meta, would have no significant drawback; would get worse on Serperior though ofc), and Brave Bird. The latter would be especially scary on Talonflame given its immense Speed stat.

A mon that looks REALLY (emphasis on really) interesting is Diggersby. It gets access to Return/Frustration coming from base 78 speed for attack rather than the base 56 attack it has normally. This allows it to have massive wallbreaking power while being able to run a positive speed nature. It can invest in defense rather than attack, since EQ and Wild Charge (for skarm and bulky waters like Slowbro, Suicune, Alo, etc.) are tough moves rather than cool. It has 77 Defense which is also a significant boost from its original 56. This also improves its bulk to allow it to tank hits, respectively. There are other cool pokes like Mega Diancie that can do work in the tier that I would like to test once this gets coded. 252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Manaphy: 390-459 (114.3 - 134.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Yeah, Shuckle here is basically Power Trick Shuckle in Doubles except it doesn't get OHKO'd by every physical move and has a reliable method of boosting. It's even scarier if you can back it up with Trick Room support somehow, because nothing is going to move before it under Trick Room unless they're a priority-user.

Shuckle will probably end up getting suspected. The big difference is that Shuckle has base 5 speed compared to Diggersby's 78. That could be the difference in killing a Slowbro or getting Scald burned. By no means is Shuckle bad, it just doesn't 100% outclass. Not to mention Diggersby has a significantly better move pool.

The problem with this is that Huge Power only effects Attack since the ability states it directly.

This means basically that any mon with Huge Power can only use Cool moves to get said boost. Same thing goes for Fur Coat and Tough moves.

But yea I am really excited to see what this metagame can bring to light (first OM to ban Shuckle y/y)

Heya nv!

This OM really seems great, one of the most innovative and unique idea I have seen in a while.

If Shuckle doesn't get banned in this OM I can definitely see it as a very common bulky sweeper. This will be one of the most common threats seen to threaten all teams. If it does get banned, I am sure we all can think plenty of other pokemon that get buffed on a stat to lead the team.

Overall, great OM and I would love to be able to play it on the ladder someday!

-TenucSkenuck

Do you guys think Trick Room could see some use in this metagame, seeing how many really threatening slow sweepers there are (like the aforementioned Shuckle)? One that comes to mind is Mega Steelix, which can use Earthquake, Heavy Slam, and Stone Edge off of its 230 Defense stat, while being fully invested in defense.

Also I was thinking Rampardos could be a threat since it now has access to recoil-free Life Orb and Sheer Force boosted Focus Blast and Thunderbolt off of its 165 base Attack. But that level of power is completely dwarfed by Ninjask and Shuckle and whatnot so it's probably not very notable.

This is a highly original metagame. I love it. XD

Bulky attackers using the modified moves would define this metagame.
Also, Will-O-Wisp can no longer put a stop to most physical attackers.

Aggron @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rock Head
EVs: 252 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Head Smash
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam
- Dragon Tail / Superpower

This is going to hurt a lot. STAB Head Smash coming off 180 base defense and without the nasty recoil. All of these moves use Aggron's stellar Defense stat, so bash everything away.

Tyranitar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Pursuit
- Rock Tomb
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Thunderbolt

This seriously needs a second look. Sand boosts Rock-type Special Defense by 50%, and Tyranitar reaches 738 SDef after Assault Vest.
Pursuit hits amazingly hard. Rock Tomb is a guaranteed 2HKO on Defensive Skarmory after rocks and Leftovers, while crippling those Cute users. HP Flying takes care of a Fighting and Grass, while Thunderbolt uses Tyranitar's still usable Atk to hit Water-types.

Uxie @ Assault Vest
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Psychic
- Knock Off
- Shadow Ball
- Giga Drain

Speaking of Assault Vest. I think AV is pretty broken.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Cotton Guard
- Body Slam / Double Edge
- Earthquake
- Roost

Other Stuff:
Cobalion: Dual STAB Close Combat and Iron Head both come off its 129 base defense stat. It also has Iron Defense to give it even more power. Coverage from Stone Edge and Poison Jab as well.
Eviolite can make bulky monsters that can hit hard. Things like Dusclops can abuse it with Shadow Sneak, Knock Off and Sucker Punch coming off SDef. Eviolite Lairon hits HARDER than Aggron.

I am also a fan of this OM idea. However, I'm thinking more Ubers than just Aegislash can be unbanned here...

Not as threatening with its coverage moves (Low Kick and Gunk Shot) being Tough (base 67 Def) and its lack of usable Cute STAB (to capitalize on its base 122 Speed). It does, however, get Frustration/Return and U-turn as Cute moves (which are pretty much its best options for physical walls), as well as the usual (and unchanged) Hydro Pump and Ice Beam.
No longer has a way to boost the power of its priority now that Sucker Punch is Clever (base 100 SpD) and Power-Up Punch is Tough (base 100 Def). Moreover, the Clever side is not even worth visiting because there is no STAB in that category. It may have a nice Tough repertoire—Crunch, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Power-Up Punch (as mentioned), Double-Edge, Drain Punch, Body Slam—but base 100 does not sound quite as appealing as base 125, Parental Bond or not, especially unboosted and with significantly nerfed priority.
Landorus is infamous for its offensive prowess with Sheer Force. Even though its STAB Earth Power is unchanged, its coverage options are completely different. In particular, Knock Off and Hidden Power are Clever (base 80 SpD), while Rock Slide and Sludge Wave are Tough (base 90 Def). Extrasensory and Focus Blast are some useful Cool moves (base 125 Atk), while U-turn is a handy Cute move (base 101 Spe), but that's pretty much the greatest extent of its coverage. Note the lack of Beautiful coverage moves. In short, its Sheer Force set seems less threatening.
Normally has ridiculous strength with Huge Power and base 105 Attack; now lacks the tools to use it (i.e., none of its useful offensive moves are Cool). In fact, its useful offensive moves are all over the place. Iron Head is Tough (base 125 Def), Flash Cannon is Beautiful (base 55 SpA), Sucker Punch and Knock Off are Clever (base 95 SpD), and Play Rough is Cute (base 50 Spe).

Thoughts?

While I do agree that some other Pokemon in Ubers can be eventually unbanned (Mega Mawile in particular for one), I wanted to take the time for the meta to "develop" before we unbanned more than just Aegislash and the only reason it was initially unbanned was because of the "controversy" of its ban in standard play. I will say that some Uber Pokemon are on my list just like a potential Shuckle suspect, but I mainly want to wait until this gets coded / playable before we do too much banning or unbanning.

Alright, here's some balance with a couple interesting innovations. I tried to adequately cover all the main threats but honestly in a meta like this there are probably 3 sets that sweep every team, but this is a good start. I felt that balance like this was the way to go because even though the team is slow, it has a lot of offensive presence as well as defensive backbones. That's obvious based on the meta which is why this will probably be the most common archetype.

Probopass @ Air Balloon
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Magnet Rise
- Stone Edge
- Fire Punch
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Dusclops @ Eviolite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Pain Split
- Pursuit
- Shadow Sneak
- Sucker Punch

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Roost
- Iron Head
- Guard Swap

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost
- Cotton Guard
- Earthquake
- Body Slam

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Heal Bell
- Sucker Punch
- Shadow Ball

Cobalion @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- Taunt

Again, it's pretty clear this meta favors mons with high defense stats, so I expect bulky Steels to be common. This Probopass set is inspired by the Air Balloon Magnet Rise Magnezone set in OU which is used to trap Excadrill.

Dusclops provides a nice special wall and really strong priority, but one of the main reasons it was chosen is to Pursuit trap Ninjask. If they switch, it OHKOs, and if they stay in they can't kill you and you have Shadow Sneak. Also checks Swoobat.

As it tends to be with oms, Skarmory is basically one of the best Pokemon and is the go to essential physical wall. This set is interesting though and is the sole reason why Shuckle isn't that much of a problem. If you see a Shuckle, let them get to +6, let a mon die so Skarm gets in safely, then countersweep them.

Altaria and Skarmory have incredible defensive synergy and this Alt can easily break through slower teams. It's the Serp answer and a bunch of other things.

Umbreon has basically the strongest priority out there and is a super fat cleric, so it's an amazing choice as it provides an emergency answer to Rock spam and really helps out Probopass, Dusclops and Cobalion.

Cobalion provides Rocks and Taunt, both of which are essential, and a Steel and Rock resist with lots of physical bulk and power, which is perfect for the meta. Shuca Berry is definitely preferred because the Rock and Steel types Cobalion is the answer to probably have EQ and are weak to at least one of Cobalion's stabs.

Swoobat @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Simple
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Amnesia
- Stored Power
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Shadow Ball

Speaking of Swoobat, this set is really scary and something that needs to be prepared for. Doesn't require too much explanation but nobody's posted it yet.

Here's an interesting core. I aimed it at being anti-meta. Gligar and Unaware Clefable form a nice core that cover eachother's weaknesses and Unaware Clefable is particularly good because there are going to be mons trying to set up all over the place. Simple Swoobat, for example. Gligar can also pass Agility to Eelektross who at x4 is at 409 Spe which is enough to outspeed the unboosted meta bar megas, unless I'm mistaken.

Gligar @ Eviolite
Ability: Immunity
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Agility
- Baton Pass
- Earthquake
- Roost

Gligar has the job of being bulky and more importantly, passing Agility to Eelektross. While Agility raises Gligar's speed, meaning Cute moves could be used, but Earthquake will still hit harder. And while unboosted, no one wants to be taking Gligar's EQ.

Eelektross @ Lum Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 192 HP / 64 Atk / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Coil
- Zap Cannon
- Iron Tail
- Drain Punch

How often do you get to see that sprite in the forums ;)
After much him-hawing, I think this would be the best set to run for Eelektross. An alternative would be running Assault Vest with Hone Claws being passed from Gligar. Anyway, even though Drain Punch now runs off of the Defense stat, it's still boosted by Coil and deals enough damage to keep Eelektross healthy.
+3 Zap Cannon 3HKO'S everything but Specially Defensive Mega Ampharos which is very, very cool (Provided I did the Calc's right).

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Moonlight
- Heal Bell

I don't really have much to say about this. Cosmic power could be used over CM, but Tough moves would give 3 Phys mons already and there isn't much to choose from on the Smart side. Cosmic Power Drain Punch would be nice considering all the rock and steel types that will be running around though.

I see Machamp as a potential check to all the threatening Steel and Rock types with absurd defenses. STAB No Guard Focus Blast coming off a base 130 attack. That's going to leave a mark. It also has Vacuum Wave for clean-up and Dynamic Punch for mixed attacking. Not many good coverage options, however.

Wonder Room might also finally have its use here as an anti-meta option. That fully invested 230 Def your Mega Aggron was hitting off of? Now its an uninvested 80. A team designed around it would be quite difficult to prepare for.
