There are many sets that have a certain surprise factor to them due to being uncommon and completely different from the Pokemon's normal fare. These Pokemon can make or break battles -- -theley're called gimmicks.

Let's just start by defining gimmicks. A gimmick is anything that is completely different from a Pokemon's normal fare or a completely different Pokemon entirely. These sets can catch the opponent off guard and throw off their battle plan while advancing yours. Netting a surprise kill or two can mean the difference between a win and a loss. This is not like Expert Belt Latios or something where you're running a standard set but switch up the item and maybe a move with the same general goal. This is your DD Latios, your Scarf Scizor, your RP MixTar. These Pokemon completely turn the tables on their common counters and win you battles.

Now that we've defined a gimmick, let's talk about the purpose of this thread. This thread is the place to post your gimmicks and to discuss the role of gimmicks in competitive battling. Another good discussion point is the use of them in tournaments vs. the ladder, where it's the difference between winning one battle and consistency. How do these gimmicks affect defensive teams. Are there defensive gimmicks? What works? What doesn't?

Why it works: Almost all Latios are specially based, so a physically based one surprises many opponents and can thus be more difficult to deal with. Dragon Dance lets Latios boost its attack to acceptable levels and its Speed to beyond insane levels, outspeeding pretty much every Choice Scarfer in the game. Outrage is pretty powerful when boosted as well. Earthquake is Latios's ace in the hole, nailing Heatran, Jirachi, and Tyranitar -- three common Latios counters, among other general coverage uses. Draco Meteor still hits hard even with minimal investment and nails Pokemon like Gliscor, Landorus-T, Hippowdon, and Donphan that could easily take the Outrage or Earthquake but can't take special attacks all that well. It's also great to kill stuff like Gengar and Starmie when you don't want to go straight for the Outrage. HP Fire lets it be a little more self sufficient by wrecking Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Forretress, Scizor, and Skarmory, but sacrifices the insurance against physical walls and in general that Draco Meteor provides -- plus you can just as easily run Magnezone and end up with the same result, while getting rid of the aforementioned physically bulky Pokemon can be tricky. It's a great surprise set that can wreck unsuspecting opponents.

My description is a little on the longer side, but it gives a general idea of what to include in a description -- how the set works and why you'd even use it over the standard set. This last part I bolded because it's very important. In order for a gimmick to be worth forgoing the utility provided by standard sets -- they're standard for a reason, after all -- it must possess desirable characteristics that set it apart from the norm.

The basic idea is that you prey on Fortresses/Ferrothorns without activating the berry and with a sub on, and charge beam them to death, sub on the next thing that tries to attack you until you get to Custap territory, move first next turn and KO them, and then with a sub on proceed to murder the third switch in. Seeing how that may seem optimistic, you can always use the berry at the very least guarantee the 2HKO on the second mon.

Use it under the rain and say gg all. Sub on status/leech seed and destroy. Raindance to predict a ttar switch in and defeat it with Focus Blast(ttar doesn't have boost of Sand with rain dance). Hurricane is obvious like focus blast. Sand destroyer nadus is a wonderful set and with Sharp beak the power of Hurricane is boosted. Nice also if u lost the weather war.

Tentacruel (M) @ Black Sludge

Under rain, this set of Tentacruel can be very tricky to deal with. His respectable 100 Base Speed united to Swords Dance, Rain Dish + Black Sludge and Waterfall rain and STAB boosted is able to inflict serious Damage and give to Tentacuel more staying power. Poison Jab is the second STAB move which allows Tentacruel to deal with Grass Pokèmon like Celebi. Rapid Spin is still a support move, you can even try Double-Edge.

Mew @ Choice Scarf

I really love this set of Mew. I use it in a volturn team and it work perfectly. Why? U-turn > Volt switch for ground user, i don't like be locked on a hippowdon for example. Ice beam is amazing for dragons(100 base power of speed like Salamance) like Salamence, Dragonite and others. Flamethrower is for Ferrothorn(2hko) and Scizor(Ohko). One of the check of this mew was Heatran. Heatran after the scouting the of this mew's set was a perfect counter. So i placed EQ to ohko it and for magnezone too. With Synchronize i can send it on the toxic to toxic together the toxic user. A nice bait killer!

MALEFIC (Chandelure) (M) @ Expert Belt

That chandelure.... is powerful. Why? >400 spatk for wonderful damages. The unique problem is that speed... but it have Flame Charge who boost its speed and is very very powah. Killed the main counters( dragons and ttar, if you use hp ground, heatran and ttar if you use hp ice) this chandelure win battling alone lol. Supported by a trio with hp ice it can work perfectly. Modest because it can't anyway outspeed scarf pokemon with timid nature, but with modest nature he can ohko Gliscor and Landorus-T with fire blast(if u use hp ice) and ho heatran with hp ground. If you use sr+ 1 layer of spikes ttar is 2ohko and do a lots of kills. Shadow ball is ohko to jellicent and latias/latios/gengar and others, fire blast kill all the pokemon weak to fire. Flame charge for speed and the hp ground for tran, ice for lando and gliscor sure ohko and for dnite. Flash fire can boost the power of this chandelabrum. He can survive to a EQ of sash trio and kill him with flame charge+sball and break all the sunny teams without eq saur/nature power sawsbuck. Very, very dangerous.

Terrakion @ Ice Gem

Ice Gem HP Ice Terrakion. This set is design to be able to catch incoming Landorus-T as they switch in to take a Close Combat or Stone Edge but instead you can hit it with and HP and be able to OHKO after SR damage. Close Combat and Stone Edge are standard and SD is added to make up for the heavy investment in Special Attack since the 140 Atk EVs make it pretty weak. If you really need to get past Landorus-T and Gliscor this is a way to go.

Say hello to Scizor, a Pokemon that lures and beats Tentecruel, Jellicent, and Ferrothorn (thinking I'm locked into BP). Flying Gem Scizor is a very cool Pokemon, as it beats most of it's own counters. The idea behind this set is to come in on something like -2 Latios, SD up as they switch in Jellicent, and KO with Acrobatics. This can open up a sweep for another physical sweeper like Feraligatr. Scizor also provides some utility in that it offers priority for stuff like Kyurem-B and Terrakion, as well as being a solid check to Latias.

EVs and nature are used to get max power, while out speeding Jellicent, Tentecruel, SpDef Heatran, and other Scizor's. Jolly is necessary for these reasons, but the lack of power is sometimes pretty crappy. SD is used to hit the switch ins hard. Bullet Punch is STAB and offers pretty nice overall coverage on offensive Pokemon, while bluffing the banded set. Super Power is used to nail Ferrothorn thinking it can come in on BP, and Acrobatics beats most of Scizor's counters. Flying Gem bluffs the choiced set even better, and obviously adds power to Acrobatics.

Volcarona @ Passho Berry

Volcorona has been feared as one of tournament's most clutch Pokemon, it gets the job done and works very well against all sorts of teams. You can never quite guess the exact set Volcorona is running either, as more often than not it can be running a completely different set than you expected. This Volcorona beats out Heatran specifically, and it also beats out water types thanks to Passho Berry. Although it may seem strange, Passho Berry is useful enough due to the prevalence of Hydro Pumps and Scalds in today's metagame. You can use Giga Drain over Bug Buzz if you like, as its all up to team design and preference. Giga Drain definitely works very well with Passho Berry. After setting up with Quiver Dance you can smash any waters types like Rotom-W and Keldeo that attempt to check it. Volcorona is definitely a very flexible Pokemon and can work on many different teams. This is obviously not just sun exclusive, and it works on virtually all types of teams, as long as you have a Rapid Spinner that is. The gimmick really comes in the item, and because of that it allows it a whole new opportunity of setting up on multiple threats that otherwise would normally beat it. The EVs allow it to outspeed Breloom while giving it max special attacking power. HP and SDef give it some additional Special Defense which allow it to handle those Hydro Pumps after +1, and paired with Passho Berry you can easily absorb these attacks and set up a second time, which can ultimately mean sweeping the opponents entire team. It is a very solid set which fits on mostly weatherless more than sun from my experience, but it would definitely work well on Sun as well. It does pretty well against Rain as it can take Scalds being throw around, especially at +1. An interesting set to say the least.

Haxorus@Focus Sash

Since Haxorus isn't very bulky, it will be facing many possible OHKO's from powerful attacks. To guarantee survival at full health, Focus Sash is used to nab a Dragon Dance. After doing so, Hax can now lay down the law by spamming any powerful move it wants. Outrage obviously hits things retardedly hard and EQ hits even the Levitate users that normally do not fear ground moves. The crux of this set is being able to use a 200 base power fighting move at will without any drawbacks in the name of Reversal. At +1, Hax literally cannot be countered. It is able to get through the likes of Skarmory and Forretress without even needing SR on the field; that's something no other Haxorus would be able to do with the same boost. Of course there are many ways of getting around this Haxorus, which in include entry hazards, status, priority moves, multi-hit moves, sand, hail, and faster choice scarfers. Also, if extremely bulky pokemon or Intimidate users are at 100%, than they can stomach a neutral hit and either faze hax out or straight up kill him after his focus sash has been broken. Of course, all sash users are worried about this so the goal is to eliminate all these possibilities to allow haxorus to sweep.

Smeargle (F) @ Choice Scarf

Ok, ok this smeargle is wonderful in offensive teams. If your opponent hasn't a spinner u set the SR. If you opponent set the SR u can spin( with no fear of a possible antispinner, no one use spin Smeargle). Spore, the classic move of smeargle, with scarf became a annoying move. Encore for boosters, subbers and protecters. I use it with DDos and that strategy work very well.

Breloom @ Choice Scarf

I like to use this Breloom every now and then for the surprise value - it's basically the epitome of a gimmick, so why not post it here? Although it is weaker offensively than the other common Breloom sets, it can take advantage of the Choice Scarf boost to get a surprise Spore on something that would normally outspeed it. Since a sleeping Pokémon is virtually a dead Pokémon in the current metagame, you can score the advantage right off the bat. This Breloom works well as an anti-lead with Bullet Seed, breaking the Focus Sashes of many common hazard leads, and putting the leads it can't kill to sleep. It matches up excellently vs. all of the weather leads, as even Ninetales can't shield itself from Spore (unless it has Sleep Talk). Despite not getting any additional power boosts, Mach Punch is still useful on this set to revenge kill things like Terrakion after a RP, and now you can also deal with Mamoswine due to outspeeding it, and hence avoiding death by Ice Shard. The last option is basically filler - Low Sweep is a nice STAB option which is stronger than Mach Punch, and ScarfLoom will outspeed almost everything at -1. Alternatively, you could use Stone Edge for coverage against Flying types, Fire types and Gengar.

Latias (F) @ Choice Scarf

Generally speaking, Latios would be the better scarfer because his offensive presence is simply bigger, but Latias can still perform a scarf set in her own way by being able to both revenge kill and support the team. Draco Meteor is her strongest STAB and therefor the best option. The second attack depends on preference: Surf provides coverage by nailing pesky Heatrans, Psyshock gets close to OHKOing Keldeo and Terrakion (although it should be noted that these two only go down to it when they're already dented) and HP Fire surprises incoming Scizors, Ferrothorns, Skarmories and Forretresses. HP Fire is the least desirable of these choices, though, because you need to run 30 speed IVs to use it, meaning you'll now speed tie with Jolly Cloyster at +2. Also, the aforementioned 4 Pokémon hate it when they get a Choice Scarf tricked onto them, meaning Trick can cripple incoming Ferrothorns well enough. Trick is also a great tool for when the scarf isn't necessary anyways because everything that can outspeed Latias is gone already or wasn't there to begin with. Healing Wish is where Latias separates herself from her brother, though, because in exchange for offensive presence, she can sacrifice herself to restore a crippled team member to full health in exchange for her life. This makes her a great tool late-game, because once you don't need your revenge killing Latias anymore, she can Trick her scarf onto whatever switches in, then go out with a Healing Wish in order to let one of your crippled team members clean the rest of the opponent's team, making her quite unpredictable.

Keldeo @ Water Gem

this keldeo really helps against sun teams (and against sand teams too sometime), rain dance on ninetales and then you can get an easily kill with an hydro pump boosted by water gem. then repeat the trick. secret sword gives some generic coverage and allows to hit ferrothorn, blissey, chansey and other things which resist to water-type. finally in the last slot you can basically use whatever you need in your team but hp ice and hp ghost are the most common choices i guess. well, that's it

posting this because nobody has do this yet and i think that set has to be posted somewhere and this is the perfect thread to do it. this thundurus really wrecks, stab electric (use tbolt if you aren't using this on a rain team) + hp ice for generic coverage also called boltbeam, grass knot to destroy gastrodon, quagsire but mostly specially defensive hippowdon which can stall out thundurus with slack off and sand damage. u-turn deals with celebi and hits harder lati twins. nothing else to say, it's probably one of the best support for rain sweeper like keldeo or even starmie but it can be used without the rain as well. give it a try

Tentacruel @ Black Sludge

I've noticed more Toxicroak on the ladder recently, and I don't know if it's just to counter Pony + Dinosaur or just a random increase, but I thought of a cool counter. Tentacruel is normally setup bait for Toxicroak, usually only carrying scald and rarely ice beam, but with HP psychic the tables have completely been turned (unless Toxicroak has earthquake for some odd reason). Exploiting Toxicroak's 4x weakness to psychic, Tentacruel can now deal a huge amount of damage to Toxicroak with no investment, and a decent chunk to fighting types such as Breloom, Keldeo, and Conkeldurr (without giving it the guts boost too).

The first EV spread I provided is a custom one I made to outspeed jolly Mamoswine, which subsequently lets you outspeed adamant Toxicroak and jolly Breloom. You can choose to ignore it and use the standard bulky spread if you'd like, as the loss in bulk is very noticeable.

With hp psychic you don't have to rely on the scald burn for Breloom and Keldeo, but scald is often the better option anyway just in case they want to switch out. Shows how stupid scald is, but I'll save that for another time. ;)

Latias (F) @ Leftovers

Right, so this set is most commonly known for Leftiez RMT. This set is so good at turning the tables on it's usual counters. Tyranitar can't touch this set, neither can Heatran or Scizor. Latias is generally being used to take on Keldeo and Thundurus-T, but being trapped by Tyranitar and Scizor is a bummer. Reflect type easily fixes this problem.

Okay so moving onto the moves and EV spread. Recover keeps Latias nice and healthy for the majority of the match, allowing it to effortlessly wall Keldeo, Politoed, and other Special attackers. Reflect Type is the key to this set, allowing it to beat it's common counters, like Scizor, Tyranitar, and Jirachi. Thunder Wave offers nice utility in that it paralyses the switch ins, and Dragon Pulse is a nice consistant STAB attack. EVs are enough speed to out speed Adamant Breloom, most Tyranitar (any variant but Scarf), and Scizor. The rest of the EVs are placed into SpDef and HP, making it bascially impossible to take down with special hits.

Jirachi @ Shuca Berry

This set may not be the most uncommon gimmick, as it has gained some popularity, but not on a large scale. Basically, this Jirachi is using no Iron Head or Body Slam, and instead is compromising with a more of a lure set. This sets main purpose is defeating common lead Garchomp, Landorus-T, Physicall Defensive Hippowdon, and Rotom-W. This set also does a good job in luring in and taking out Ferrothorn and breaking it up pretty badly with a Hidden Power Fire. Basically, this Jirachi takes out most of its common switch-ins (aside from Heatran) and can also act as a fantastic SR Lead that works well as the game goes on. Shuca Berry is to make sure Garchomp, Landorus-T, or Hippowdon can't take Jirachi out before it can cripple them. Usually, they will have to compromise Stealth Rock for being heavily damaged, or no rocks for getting a weaker hit on Jirachi. This set may not be amazing later on, but it does shine early game when the set is not expected. It does very well in the lead metagame, and getting up Rocks quick is always a nice bonus, as like I said, it is basically always a compromise for you and the opponent. Using this set with Pokemon that benefit from the above things it beats is a wise decision, so things that like Hippowdon weakened (like Terrakion) or Ferrothorn beaten up (Latios) are great partners with this set.

This set isn't exactly gimmicky but you don't see it around much and is very underrated. Lure Victini is absolutely amazing on any sun team. The idea behind this set is a common one of causing major damage by fooling the opponent, as most players would not think to switch their special wall into Victini until their Landorus-T meets a Blue Flare. This set has a lot more options ranging from Psychic to Grass Knot depending on what you need your lure Victini to do. Victory Star also helps on this set since it allows Victini to run moves such as Thunder and Focus Blast without fearing a miss as often as these moves do miss. Blue Flare is stabbed and extremely powerful. Glaciate allows to hit stuff like Landorus-T in rain if im facing a rain team or catch Lati's on the switch in and the speed drop is helpful. Thunder is mainly for stuff like Slowbro. Focus Blast gives you a means to hit those rock types (mainly tyranitar) which you can bait in since this is a lure set.

this thing is nu but it can work even in ou. it's one of the most underrated support for rain offense i guess, it counters 100% rotom-w which can be somewhat problematic for rain offense, can setup the stealth rock, hits really hard with hydro pump in rain and wreck celebi with hidden power bug. earth power is for coverage and to hit annoying stuff like tentacruel and other things which resist both hydro pump and hidden power bug. use it in a rain offense and with something which hates celebi (keldeo for example) and it won't disappoint you

this latios helps sun teams a lot. with earthquake it can bypass easily heatran without using dugtrio, hidden power fire hits other steel like scizor, ferrothorn and jirachi and draco meteor is a generic stab. otherwise memento allows an easier setup to a things like volcarona and venusaur which can setup their quiver dance growth respectively and sweep teams after heatran is removed (you can use hidden power ground volcarona, earthquake venusaur and even dugtrio but this latios often does his job so i'd suggest to not lose any slot both in your team or in your mons, using hp ground and earthquake always loses coverage on something else). nothing else to say, try it sometime

Venusaur? No problem! He can take an EQ of +2saur. Ninetales? Walled! Volcarona? Useless. I reset its stat changes with Haze. And with sands? Ttar? Hippowdon? Where is the problem? Wow them and then use painsplit to recover important hp. Breloom? Chandelure resist bullet seed and is immune to Mach punch or focus punch. This Chandelure is very very powerfull!

In an other hand this ferrothorn is bulky and thanks to Iron barbs it can defeat anything if is subbed! Really Nice set to use in a stall team!

With Fire Blast hit ferrothorn, scizor others switch in, with ice beam gliscor or bulky lando. With superpower blissey, who after scout ice beam and fire blast think what that Dragonite is only Special and take a great damage from superpower. Espeed is nice for little cleaning.

this mew is really a good lead for any offensive team, it can setup stealth rock easily and then progress to support a special sweeper of the team, something like lati twins or reuniclus. it's really uncommon (i have seen it only once in a wcop match of taylor so yeah credit to him for this) but with its bulk it can baton pass at least 1 nasty plot and then a lati twins or reuniclus (or any special sweeper as i already said) are really hard to stop so give it a try i guess, it isn't bad as it could look and it can surprise lots of opponent as well (be careful at some roar / whirlwind mons though since they rape this set)

KING (Slowking) (F) @ Choice Specs

That set is dangerous. Slowking is very bulky. For this reason it is difficult to knock him out with a single move. The trait that dream world provides enables it to last even more. It has excellent switch-in, especially on pokemon as keldeo or some bulky water and, supported by some hazardz(for example SR + a layer of spikes) he can do 2hko to ferrothorn. Ice beam ohko the stupid dragons which thinks they can setup on Slowking with their dances. Fire blast is a good choice for ohko ferrothorn( under the rain too) and do serious damage on Celebi in wless. Surf is the main STAB. Under the rain it can ohko jirachi and do 2ohko to rotom-w and others bulkywater. It is 3hko on ferrothorn, but 2 ohko with SR+ a layer of spikes. Psychic is the second STAB and kills Amoonguss, toxicroak and bulky water too. The evs spread to outspeed pokemon with the same speed(like other Sloking/slowbro, amoonguss or Ferrothorn) and max Spatk for amazing damages. The others 240 evs in Hp for more staying power and bulkyness.

Latios (M) @ Choice Specs

Now this Latios is fairly standard outside of Sleep Talk. Not really a huge change from the onsite sets / common sets but Sleep Talk gives you valuable sleep fodder for Breloom and Venusaur w/ Sleep Powder. You come in to take the sleep and as Breloom or Venusaur use the turn to Set up you can fire off a Draco / Psyshock / HP Fire to kill off Venusaur and Breloom (or bring it to its sash). With Breloom being so common and Sleep Powder Venusaur being a looming possibility that it doesn't hurt to have good sleep fodder and Specs Latios is great for that.

I've been saving this one for a while.

Flashback to 2011: I'm playing the UU ladder on PO (still 4th gen), and what do I see? An Altaria. And what does that Altaria know? Draco Meteor and Power Swap. It almost wrecked my team, I barely came away with the win. I've been in love with Power Swap ever since, and this is the first time it's been available on an OU mon.
The main premise here is to actually make Ninetales somewhat bulkier by spamming WoW's and Power Swap drops to the opponent. Bascially, you click Overheat on something you're comfortable using Overheat on, then if it KO's, either Power Swap or WoW according to what type of mon they are (Special attackers Power Swap, Physical WoW, and generally for mixed attackers I like to use WoW because Ninetales' SpD is slightly higher, or Power Swap if I know their best move is special, utility/walls get hit with WoW). It can somewhat parallel Politoed's bulkiness for the most part, and allows Ninetales to actually live longer and do something rather than switch in and out. This gimmick is slightly more consistent and useful on the ladder whereas there are much more offensive teams compared to tournaments. It's surprisingly useful and consistent on Sun teams which need the extra bulk from Ninetales to live. I'd like to say it's effective enough to get rid of the need for Dugtrio, but it isn't. This set gets wrecked by Heatran (but most sun teams do anyways).

There's also the more offensive approach (which I like less) of a 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe spread and timid nature which can run Overheat/Power Swap/Solarbeam or Energy Ball/Hidden Power or other filler if that's your thing.

I think I used this Latias set in two or three of my World Cup matches, and it's growing to be one of my favorite sets to run on tournament teams. Obviously gimmick sets are far more effective in tournaments since it only has to work once which leads to some crazy shit; however, I feel like this is one of those sets that is actually pretty consistent. Flame Orb Latias allows you to lure in almost every one of its counters and Trick. Most of these counters are primarily physical which gives Latias leeway when a Tyranitar or Scizor switches in and threatens with Pursuit as they just lost their item and they are burned. Latias can Trick choice items it may recieve later in the game as well which is pretty cool. Being able to burn Tyranitar, Scizor, Jirachi, Chansey, Blissey, Ferrothorn, etc. and steal their item allows for another sweeper on your team weak those Pokemon the ability to sweep. Tornadus in rain, for example, loves this support. This also gives Latias less of a chance to be Pursuit-trapped and ran over by Tyranitar+Keldeo. Obviously you have to switch in Latias directly at times and burn yourself which is why Healing Wish is an option. Healing Wish gives you flexibility to full heal another sweeper on your team, but you lose survivability that Roost gives. The set is frowned upon by some, but I feel like it's an effective set that fits my personal playstyle and is an effective lure.

Kyurem-B @ Life Orb / Lum Berry

I started using this set on the Tornadus-T suspect ladder (and got reqs with it). I've never looked back. This set combines all of Kyurem-B's best aspects -- namely stallbreaking, bulk, and power -- into one monster of a set. 136 Speed is just enough to outspeed most Dragonite and Mamoswine, which is as much as I think you need. The Life Orb and max Special Attack make Ice Beam hit like a truck, OHKOing literally everything weak to it and many neutral things. It 2HKOes Ferrothorn, and you can take a Gyro Ball. This set can handle most any onslaught from the likes of Starmie, Rotom-W, Jolteon, non-sun Volcarona, Venusaur, Donphan, and more with its improved bulk over the standard set. Modest Kyurem-B has grown in popularity as of late, but not with as much defensive investment -- despite this I think that the sets are similar enough to say that the normal Modest is a testament to the effectiveness of this set. Fusion Bolt does literally everything it needs to do even with the Attack-reducing nature, still 2HKOing or even OHKOing all of the relevant Water-types. Earth Power is what I generally prefer to run in the third slot, nailing Tentacruel, Jirachi, non-balloon Heatran, Rotom-W, and Gengar in particular, though it has a couple other uses against some rarer threats. HP Fire is mainly useful for OHKOing Custap Skarmory and Forretress without having to worry about hazards. In general, Kyurem-B is really nice for any Sturdy Pokemon because it completely ignores the ability thanks to Teravolt. Roost gives Kyurem-B so much longevity, enabling it to act as not just a check but a wall to the numerous aforementioned Pokemon. On a hazard-weak Pokemon (though you'll still want to keep Stealth Rock off the field) that is also incurring Life Orb and possibly sandstorm recoil, Roost is a massive help. Kyurem-B also gets tons of free Roosts. Roost also allows it to ruin stall teams for pretty much all of eternity. I'll sometimes run Lum Berry if I want a perfect match-up against stall and bulky Water-types (fuck Scald) in general.

Tornadus @ Leftovers

When played correctly (and with a little luck), this Tornadus set is perhaps one of the most infuriating things you'll ever come across, almost on par with Liepard. The key difference here of course is that while this set also utilises confusion hax, it manages to be threatening on its own without having to totally rely on haxxing your opponent. The idea is that you use Substitute on a predicted switch, then use Swagger on their check. You can then keep using Substitute with priority until they inevitably succumb to confusion, which gives you the opportunity to get another attack in for free. Thanks to Substitute, you get a safety net if Swagger fails. With this set, you can theoretically beat absolutely anything, although it still constitutes a gimmick as it can occasionally backfire if you give an attack boost to something like Lum DDNite. Still, this set has incredible potential as a wall-breaker and a sweeper.

Fuck this thing. Seriously, unless you play like an utter god, SOMETHING is going to get crippled and annoyed to death. Swagger boosts the opponent's attack -- Foul Play capitalizes on that. Everything not Steel-type just dies. Substitute blocks stray attacks hit through confusion. Thunder Wave is I guess for that parafusion, but that's not why it's so scary -- paralyzing your Scarfer or sweeper can literally mean gg. You have to tread around carefully whenever you fight this thing. Fortunately, it is frail so you can KO it with a lot of common stuff -- unfortunately by that time the damage is often already done.

I'm hyping this a bit over much perhaps, but it's really strong and annoying. It's about as gimmicky as gimmicky gets -- being very luck-reliant -- but the possibility of completely crippling and/or KOing a Pokemon or two is undeniably good.

Now this is a bit of a weird set. This works best on voltturn because of the things it does for voltturn. Voltturn abhors hazards; custap leads and ferrothorn in particular are extremely annoying. That's where this comes in. You send it as a lead against a custap skarm and your opponent thinks you're dumb sending your wallbreaker out so early. But then you taunt it and force it out. By predicting that, you use u-turn. Later on your SR can break skarm's sturdy.
The EVs allow me to outspeed max speed base 95's(haxorus imo is too irrelevant in OU) and rest in bulk and hit hard. The item is leftovers but any preferred item such as dragon gem can be used.

Tyranitar @ Custap Berry

I don't know where I got the idea of using custap berry exactly, but I needed Ttar to by my SR supporter, so I really couldn't afford to be choiced. I know some people use scarf + rocks on mons like Jirachi and Garchomp, but it's really not ideal for Ttar because it's slow and has exploitable weaknesses. Lum and chople are decent options, as you can still bluff choice, but after setting up rocks idk who's still going to think you're choiced. And then there's leftovers, which is an option that should never be used imo. So I went with custap for shits and giggles. And it turned out to not be that bad. The custap really comes in handy against spike stacking hyper offense teams, as you can manipulate your hp by switching in and out. I always thought it was hilarious when I did this against things like +2 Volcarona and scarf Mence which would have caused me trouble me otherwise. The sdef is there so I can switch into specs Latios and take two draco meteors or have a decent shot at living 2 surfs, guaranteeing the trap even if they stay in due to the custap. I chose low kick > superpower in that slot because it still hits a good amount of targets for max damage (Terrakion, Ferrothorn, Lucario), and there's no attack drop to force you out. I guess this isn't a terrible gimmick since it can beat specs Latios reliably without having to guess between crunch and pursuit, but it's still not really the best. It can also help you beat Starmie, but you need way too much investment to be able to take two life orb hydros.

Ice Gem HP Ice Terrakion. This set is design to be able to catch incoming Landorus-T as they switch in to take a Close Combat or Stone Edge but instead you can hit it with and HP and be able to OHKO after SR damage. Close Combat and Stone Edge are standard and SD is added to make up for the heavy investment in Special Attack since the 140 Atk EVs make it pretty weak. If you really need to get past Landorus-T and Gliscor this is a way to go.

Right, so this set is most commonly known for Leftiez RMT. This set is so good at turning the tables on it's usual counters. Tyranitar can't touch this set, neither can Heatran or Scizor. Latias is generally being used to take on Keldeo and Thundurus-T, but being trapped by Tyranitar and Scizor is a bummer. Reflect type easily fixes this problem.

Okay so moving onto the moves and EV spread. Recover keeps Latias nice and healthy for the majority of the match, allowing it to effortlessly wall Keldeo, Politoed, and other Special attackers. Reflect Type is the key to this set, allowing it to beat it's common counters, like Scizor, Tyranitar, and Jirachi. Thunder Wave offers nice utility in that it paralyses the switch ins, and Dragon Pulse is a nice consistant STAB attack. EVs are enough speed to out speed Adamant Breloom, most Tyranitar (any variant but Scarf), and Scizor. The rest of the EVs are placed into SpDef and HP, making it bascially impossible to take down with special hits.

I'd say this set isn't as gimmicky as it used to be. Gimmick sets that work often become "standard", mainly because they work so well.

This set may not be the most uncommon gimmick, as it has gained some popularity, but not on a large scale. Basically, this Jirachi is using no Iron Head or Body Slam, and instead is compromising with a more of a lure set. This sets main purpose is defeating common lead Garchomp, Landorus-T, Physicall Defensive Hippowdon, and Rotom-W. This set also does a good job in luring in and taking out Ferrothorn and breaking it up pretty badly with a Hidden Power Fire. Basically, this Jirachi takes out most of its common switch-ins (aside from Heatran) and can also act as a fantastic SR Lead that works well as the game goes on. Shuca Berry is to make sure Garchomp, Landorus-T, or Hippowdon can't take Jirachi out before it can cripple them. Usually, they will have to compromise Stealth Rock for being heavily damaged, or no rocks for getting a weaker hit on Jirachi. This set may not be amazing later on, but it does shine early game when the set is not expected. It does very well in the lead metagame, and getting up Rocks quick is always a nice bonus, as like I said, it is basically always a compromise for you and the opponent. Using this set with Pokemon that benefit from the above things it beats is a wise decision, so things that like Hippowdon weakened (like Terrakion) or Ferrothorn beaten up (Latios) are great partners with this set.

I actually have tons of pretty cool gimmick sets, so I will be posting here pretty often with some fresh stuff that works.

Bascially, you click Overheat on something you're comfortable using Overheat on, then if it KO's, either Power Swap or WoW according to what type of mon they are (Special attackers Power Swap, Physical WoW, and generally for mixed attackers I like to use WoW because Ninetales' SpD is slightly higher, or Power Swap if I know their best move is special, utility/walls get hit with WoW). It can somewhat parallel Politoed's bulkiness for the most part, and allows Ninetales to actually live longer and do something rather than switch in and out. This gimmick is slightly more consistent and useful on the ladder whereas there are much more offensive teams compared to tournaments. It's surprisingly useful and consistent on Sun teams which need the extra bulk from Ninetales to live. I'd like to say it's effective enough to get rid of the need for Dugtrio, but it isn't. This set gets wrecked by Heatran (but most sun teams do anyways).

There's also the more offensive approach (which I like less) of a 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe spread and timid nature which can run Overheat/Power Swap/Solarbeam or Energy Ball/Hidden Power or other filler if that's your thing.

Trait: Technician

Say hello to Scizor, a Pokemon that lures and beats Tentecruel, Jellicent, and Ferrothorn (thinking I'm locked into BP). Flying Gem Scizor is a very cool Pokemon, as it beats most of it's own counters. The idea behind this set is to come in on something like -2 Latios, SD up as they switch in Jellicent, and KO with Acrobatics. This can open up a sweep for another physical sweeper like Feraligatr. Scizor also provides some utility in that it offers priority for stuff like Kyurem-B and Terrakion, as well as being a solid check to Latias.

EVs and nature are used to get max power, while out speeding Jellicent, Tentecruel, SpDef Heatran, and other Scizor's. Jolly is necessary for these reasons, but the lack of power is sometimes pretty crappy. SD is used to hit the switch ins hard. Bullet Punch is STAB and offers pretty nice overall coverage on offensive Pokemon, while bluffing the banded set. Super Power is used to nail Ferrothorn thinking it can come in on BP, and Acrobatics beats most of Scizor's counters. Flying Gem bluffs the choiced set even better, and obviously adds power to Acrobatics.

I'm telling ya, I see this set becoming pretty standard, but right now? I'd say it's gimmicky

Latias @ Flame Orb

I think I used this Latias set in two or three of my World Cup matches, and it's growing to be one of my favorite sets to run on tournament teams. Obviously gimmick sets are far more effective in tournaments since it only has to work once which leads to some crazy shit; however, I feel like this is one of those sets that is actually pretty consistent. Flame Orb Latias allows you to lure in almost every one of its counters and Trick. Most of these counters are primarily physical which gives Latias leeway when a Tyranitar or Scizor switches in and threatens with Pursuit as they just lost their item and they are burned. Latias can Trick choice items it may recieve later in the game as well which is pretty cool. Being able to burn Tyranitar, Scizor, Jirachi, Chansey, Blissey, Ferrothorn, etc. and steal their item allows for another sweeper on your team weak those Pokemon the ability to sweep. Tornadus in rain, for example, loves this support. This also gives Latias less of a chance to be Pursuit-trapped and ran over by Tyranitar+Keldeo. Obviously you have to switch in Latias directly at times and burn yourself which is why Healing Wish is an option. Healing Wish gives you flexibility to full heal another sweeper on your team, but you lose survivability that Roost gives. The set is frowned upon by some, but I feel like it's an effective set that fits my personal playstyle and is an effective lure.

This is another cool, gimmicky set I've been a fan of recently. If it isn't obvious to you, here's the primary purpose of Double Edge + Normal Gem:

+1 252+ Atk Normal Gem Gyarados Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Rotom-W: 296-349 (97.36 - 114.8%) -- 81.25% chance to OHKO

+1 252+ Atk Normal Gem Gyarados Return vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Rotom-W: 252-297 (82.89 - 97.69%) -- guaranteed 2HKO


Gyarados is finally able to lure in its #1 nemesis! Being able to kill Rotom-W is pretty rad, and it opens up doors in a game for another sweeper on your team that is weak to Rotom-W to do work. Examples include Mamoswine, Tornadus, Mixed Jirachi, etc. Double Edge has a few other perks bar slamming Rotom-W however. It can nail Politoed for a ton of damage and also can actually hit Keldeo without having to rely on Bounce as a way to OHKO it. This is pretty huge since Keldeo can just spam Icy Wind until you're weak enough to get knocked out by one of its STABs while switching to a Flying-resistance like Tyranitar as you Bounce. Earthquake is just there for general coverage and it hits Jirachi, healthy Magnezone, Toxicroak without recoil + gem, etc. Stone Edge and Ice Fang also have their own merits. Although this set may seem cool, it has survivability issues due to the recoil damage and lack of Leftovers recovery, so it's recommended you use this on a hyper offensive team.

@Subject 18: Life Orb is just far more consistent on that Terrakion as you can simply use Hidden Power Ice on the switch and the main moves you'll be spamming are boosted. Max Attack is wanted as well. Hidden Power Ice needs prediction, not a whole item and 29 Atk stat points wasted on it.

I like to use this Breloom every now and then for the surprise value - it's basically the epitome of a gimmick, so why not post it here? Although it is weaker offensively than the other common Breloom sets, it can take advantage of the Choice Scarf boost to get a surprise Spore on something that would normally outspeed it. Since a sleeping Pokémon is virtually a dead Pokémon in the current metagame, you can score the advantage right off the bat. This Breloom works well as an anti-lead with Bullet Seed, breaking the Focus Sashes of many common hazard leads, and putting the leads it can't kill to sleep. It matches up excellently vs. all of the weather leads, as even Ninetales can't shield itself from Spore (unless it has Sleep Talk). Despite not getting any additional power boosts, Mach Punch is still useful on this set to revenge kill things like Terrakion after a RP, and now you can also deal with Mamoswine due to outspeeding it, and hence avoiding death by Ice Shard. The last option is basically filler - Low Sweep is a nice STAB option which is stronger than Mach Punch, and ScarfLoom will outspeed almost everything at -1. Alternatively, you could use Stone Edge for coverage against Flying types, Fire types and Gengar.

This set isn't exactly gimmicky but you don't see it around much and is very underrated. Lure Victini is absolutely amazing on any sun team. The idea behind this set is a common one of causing major damage by fooling the opponent, as most players would not think to switch their special wall into Victini until their Landorus-T meets a Blue Flare. This set has a lot more options ranging from Psychic to Grass Knot depending on what you need your lure Victini to do. Victory Star also helps on this set since it allows Victini to run moves such as Thunder and Focus Blast without fearing a miss as often as these moves do miss. Blue Flare is stabbed and extremely powerful. Glaciate allows to hit stuff like Landorus-T in rain if im facing a rain team or catch Lati's on the switch in and the speed drop is helpful. Thunder is mainly for stuff like Slowbro. Focus Blast gives you a means to hit those rock types (mainly tyranitar) which you can bait in since this is a lure set.

Matt Tuck's Victini isn't a mixed attacker; it's a lure. I was going to post it last night since PokeaimMD had a PO live video where he demolished everything with it but i fell asleep before I could even search for a sprite.

My only issue with this set is how prediction heavy it is. I would assume its primary niche is sleeping the latis and the like, allowing a keldeo sweep or something. However since it is scarved, you have to predict the lati switch in (which admittedly isnt too hard aside from having to judge skill level on the ladder). Even then, any important poke will be very hesitant to switch in before sleep clause.

This Blissey is pretty much the standard Blissey, but with one crucial difference: it has enough speed to outspeed Choice Band Scizor. This allows Blissey to surprise and kill off Scizor before it can U-turn or Superpower, breaking the volt-turn loop if need be, or just killing off Scizor which may be a threat to the team. If you are wondering, no Flamethrower does not 1HKO, it needs a bit of prior damage such as Stealth Rocks and a layer of spikes, or just 2 hits from Stealth Rock, or more easily, hitting Scizor with Seismic Toss as it comes in.

0 SpA Blissey Flamethrower vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Scizor: 256-304 (74.63 - 88.62%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Spikes

If you are wondering why not just roast Scizor as it is switching in... my prediction is terrible. As is the thread, this is kind of gimmicky, but if you desperately need a way to dispatch Scizor on your stall team, here it is.

This is a bit of a strange one, but stay with me. Skill Swap enables Blissey to combat a few niche threats, in particular Calm Mind Reuniclus. Now while Calm Mind Reuniclus has fallen out of favor in BW2, it still isn't a good idea for a stall team to not be able to deal with it. So if you can't find a way to put Jirachi, Tyranitar, Scizor, ect on your team, consider just changing this one move on your Blissey to deal with it. If you are wondering how Blissey deals with Reuniclus, its quite simple: Toxic it, then proceed to use Skill Swap which gets rid of it's ability and makes it lose health from poison damage. There are also a few other interesting things this Blissey can do, it can remove Gliscor's and Breloom's poison heal, making them lose health from their poison, it steals Dragonite's Mutiscale, swaps Dugtrio's Area trap allowing Blissey to switch out, steals Heatran's Flare Fire, Toxicroak and Tentacruel's rain dish, Venusaurs Chrolophyll, ect. Overall its a fun move to toy with with surprisingly good use on Blissey. Chansey can use this move with pretty much the same effect.

So I recently used this set in my team, and I think it classes as a gimmick. A solid gimmick at that though.



Politoed @ Water Gem

Okay so I dunno who came up with this set first, but I saw this on CTC's Swimming Pools team, and I loved the idea of it, and it's such a cool lure to beat Tyranitar and Toxicroak. The idea behind the set is to kill something off with say Ice Beam, and Tyranitar comes in thinking you're choice'd so they Pursuit. That's when you hit them with a Hydro Pump and KO Tyranitar, winning the weather war easily. Same thing applies to Toxicroak, they switch in on say Focus Blast, and you just KO them with Psychic as they SD.

So, Modest for max power, 12 speed to speed creep other Politoeds, while the rest goes into HP for bulk. Hydro Pump is STAB and hits stupidly hard. Ice Beam provides nice coverage. Focus Blast hit's Ferrothorn, luring something like Toxicroak to switch in. And finally, Psychic is for Toxicroak (and I guess Keldeo?). Toxic is slashed if your team doesn't have problems with Toxicroak, as it nails Jellicent and other bulky Water types thinking you're locked into a move, crippling them for the rest of the game.

Really cool and fun set to use

Yeah, I've seen that set a couple times before @ShootinStarmie -- I even used it on one of my teams. It's really past gimmick status imo at this point and more of a standard if slightly uncommon set, like you said gimmicks often become. I prefer

@Scarfwynaut -- I like your sets because they show the flexibility stall teams have in their Blissey slot. Blissey can be adapted to handle so many things -- the ways you've presented to adapt Blissey are great ways to handle common threats to stall (well I wouldn't rate CB Scizor among the top threats to stall but that's beside the point).

Golurk's main niche over other entry hazard leads is that nothing can Rapid Spin on him when he sets up Stealth Rock. You would be wrong to think that a Ghost-typing is the only trick up Golurk's sleeve though! Unbeknownist to most, Golurk has access to Magic Coat which allows it to beat faster leads. Of course Stealth Rock and Taunt are reflected back, which allows Golurk to insure against hazards being set on your side. You also should not forget that Magic Coat reflects back Spore from lead Breloom too! Now I was having a bit of trouble deciding upon what Golurk should do with its other two moveslots. Right now I am using a page out of lead Machamp's book by using Dynamic Punch+no Guard. After a Pokemon switches out after being Taunted by their own Magic Coat, it can be an effective option to use once you have been brought down to your sash. Your opponent won't like the annoying 50% chance of taking more damage. Ice Punch is used to deter Landorus-T and Dragons. Even if both attacks are not STAB moves, they still pack quite a punch (hehe). Of course you can go for the the more traditional option of using Earthquake and Shadow Punch, which are Golurk's STAB moves. The EV's outspeed min-speed Scizor and maximize attack. The rest are poured into bulk. I am considering using a max attack - max+ speed spread, but if I mispredict with Magic Coat, the bulk serves me well.

I just made this up on the spot tbh but I think it's at least worth a mention

So I was thinking, everyone whines about HP Ghost on Keldeo making it be able to pass Jellicent, right? So... Keldeo lure anyone? Choice Specs Jellicent actually boasts some decent power, you can read more about it on the smogdex (too lazy to type it up) and I honestly just took the exact set there except removed Hydro Pump and slashed it on Water Spout so I could add my idea in: Hidden Power that Keldeo is weak to (I chose grass so you can deal with waters in general too, not just Keldeo and you keep all your speed which is important). Look at this calc:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Jellicent Hidden Power Grass vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Keldeo: 204-242 (63.15 - 74.92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

So the way I've started to notice Keldeo players play is that they honestly will outright send any HP Ghost Keldeo's right into Jellicent because all Jellicent can do is spam status on it. Not this baby. The main idea is that you send it in hoping to lure a Keldeo (shouldn't be that hard most times) and hit it with HP Grass on the switch in, or most times Keldeo will get that low in HP anyways so you can come in and act like you are a wall then just OHKO it. I realize the calc isn't amazing, but it works.

I guess it's more or less on a similar vein to CB Ferrothorn, like there's probably no reason to use it other than snag a kill from the fact that the opponent will never suspect it (which is what a gimmick generally is)

Volcorona has been feared as one of tournament's most clutch Pokemon, it gets the job done and works very well against all sorts of teams. You can never quite guess the exact set Volcorona is running either, as more often than not it can be running a completely different set than you expected. This Volcorona beats out Heatran specifically, and it also beats out water types thanks to Passho Berry. Although it may seem strange, Passho Berry is useful enough due to the prevalence of Hydro Pumps and Scalds in today's metagame. You can use Giga Drain over Bug Buzz if you like, as its all up to team design and preference. Giga Drain definitely works very well with Passho Berry. After setting up with Quiver Dance you can smash any waters types like Rotom-W and Keldeo that attempt to check it. Volcorona is definitely a very flexible Pokemon and can work on many different teams. This is obviously not just sun exclusive, and it works on virtually all types of teams, as long as you have a Rapid Spinner that is. The gimmick really comes in the item, and because of that it allows it a whole new opportunity of setting up on multiple threats that otherwise would normally beat it. The EVs allow it to outspeed Breloom while giving it max special attacking power. HP and SDef give it some additional Special Defense which allow it to handle those Hydro Pumps after +1, and paired with Passho Berry you can easily absorb these attacks and set up a second time, which can ultimately mean sweeping the opponents entire team. It is a very solid set which fits on mostly weatherless more than sun from my experience, but it would definitely work well on Sun as well. It does pretty well against Rain as it can take Scalds being throw around, especially at +1. An interesting set to say the least.

^Sorry if I'm dense, but I don't get why this Volc is a gimmick... because of the Passho Berry? Seems pretty cool anyway, and Passho is not standard and clever. It just doesn't feel like a "gimmick" to me.
