move 1: Iron Defense
move 2: Salt Cure
move 3: Recover
move 4: Body Press / Fissure
item: Sitrus Berry / Figy Berry
ability: Purifying Salt
nature: Careful / Impish
tera type: Steel / Flying
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* With Purifying Salt making it immune to status and Salt Cure providing useful chip damage, especially against Water- and Steel-types, Garganacl is a dangerous defensive setup Pokemon.

* Body Press is the best option for consistency against offensive teams.

* Fissure severely punishes passive play against Garganacl, at the cost of forcing it to rely on Salt Cure residual damage against offensive teams.

Tera Types
========

* **Flying-type**: A Flying typing lets Garganacl take on formerly super effective attacks such as Earthquake and Close Combat while making it a reasonable check to most Breloom.

* **Steel-type**: Terastallizing into a Steel-type stops Amoonguss from clearing its boosts with Clear Smog and makes Garganacl a decent check to Fairy-types such as offensive Mimikyu and Substitute + Calm Mind Flutter Mane.

EV Spreads
========

* **252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe with Careful**: If using Tera Flying Garganacl, maximizing Special Defense is the best choice for easier setup.

* **252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe with Impish**: In addition to powering up Body Press, a focus on Defense makes setting up on powerful setup sweepers such as Dragonite an easier task.

* **252 HP / 84 Def / 172 SpD with Careful**: This EV spread allows Tera Steel Garganacl to avoid a 2HKO from Breloom's Mach Punch after Iron Defense.

GP 1/1! Quick note: "setup" is the adjective (Dragonite is a setup sweeper), "set up" is the action (Dragonite can set up on Corviknight), and "set-up" refers to a mon that has already set up (it is hard to revenge kill a set-up Dragonite).

This was the right analysis to upload while munching down on some salty (and not the healthiest) french fries lol.

Thanks for the check, and I'll keep that tip about "setup" in mind for now on!

I haven't used Garganacl, but I've invariably seen ghost Tera and lefties. Is this not encouraged?
I think a Ghost tera type is worth discussing (I know Dragonwhale used it on his climb to masterball). The immunity to Body Press is pretty nice in Garg mirrors, even if I feel like Flying does overshadow it a bit with the Fissure immunity.

I don't mind slashing Leftovers in either, Garg is bulky enough to last long enough for Leftovers to matter.

I don't mind adding either of them if other QC members are OK with it!

Ghost tera is definitely good, and while I think pinch berries are better than leftovers, if you plan on making use of garganacl as more of a general utility mon, leftovers can be helpful. I’d say it’s worth adding

The Ghost Tera Type and Leftovers have been added Onsite!

I realize responding to stuff like this after the tag says "Done" may be strange, but this is actually intentional! I'll talk more about it once I get the reservation thread done (sorry that's been taking so long, about 20 mons were uploaded today LOL).

Thanks for brining this up Omastar68 , this likely fell through the cracks because Garganacl was the first analysis done!

About the Garganacl Tera Types Section:
  • Steel-type: Terastallizing into a Steel-type stops Amoonguss from clearing its boosts with Clear Smog and makes Garganacl a decent check to Fairy-types such as offensive Mimikyu and Substitute + Calm Mind Flutter Mane.
Should Flutter Mane be mentioned here? It's definitely an Ubers threat checked by Garg but banned in both BSS Series 1 and Showdown OU. I honestly don't know if it should or should not be mentioned - just asking.

Also on the subject, it may not be in OU tier (officially yet), but Espathra has a similar Protect/Substitute + Calm Mind setup also checked by Tera Steel that might be worth mentioning here if only for Series 1. Currently a rising OU build around 8% usage on Pikalytics: https://www.pikalytics.com/pokedex/gen9ou/espathra

While I do agree with your espartha point, I think it’s generally best to avoid bringing up mons performances in other tiers as a representation of their viability in BSS. BSS’ metagame is a fair bit different from smogon tiers especially considering item clause, and the fact that sleep and ohko clause don’t exist. This leads to some pokes that see almost no success in smogon formats being actually quite good in BSS, and vise versa.

For example, in Gen 8, Glastrier was a massive threat in BSS, but Spectrier was considerably worse off, whereas it was the exact opposite in smogon OU. It’s best to stick to analyzing how a mon performs in the respective tier you’re looking at, and while the comparisons can be made and produce accurate results, I think they should generally be avoided.
