Project Draft League Matchup Analysis - Cycle 2

Welcome to the Draft League forum's first community project! Each round, you'll be given a draft to build with in a pre-set matchup, and you'll have 1 week to build a team for the matchup and post it in this thread. In the second week, you'll be able to rank other people's builds, and the winner will be the build with the highest average rank. The project will run on a two week cycle, with the following format:
  • I will post a matchup between two drafts on Monday morning, specifying which draft you'll have to build with. The ruleset will be posted alongside the matchup.
  • You'll have until 11:59pm GMT -5 on Sunday to submit a team for the matchup, along with a brief explanation of your sets.
  • There will then be a weeklong voting period where users can rank the teams in the order they believe is the best.
  • You'll have until 11:59pm GMT -5 on Saturday to submit a ranking of the builds - you cannot rank your own build. Do not ask anyone for votes, offer to exchange votes, or attempt to manipulate the voting in any way.
  • The winner will be added to the Hall of Fame post (post #2 in this thread).
  • All discussion related to this project can be posted in this thread.
Have fun :D

Cycle 1:

Your Team:

:great tusk: :volcarona: (tera) :baxcalibur: :rotom-wash: :mimikyu: :kilowattrel: :klefki: :naclstack:
Opposing Team:
:dragonite: (tera) :ting-lu: :iron moth: :dondozo: :lycanroc-dusk: :bronzong: :sylveon: :brambleghast:

For the first cycle, we'll be looking at with two teams that reached the round of 64 of the Draft Kick-Off Tour. You will be tasked with building using SparksBlade's team to take on Zooch's team. With an extremely threatening Tera abuser in Volcarona and Dragonite on each side, how will you tackle this matchup?

Rules:
For anyone unfamiliar, teams in the Kick-Off Tour have one tera captain which is the only pokemon allowed to terastallize on their respective teams. Your tera captain is Volcarona, while the opponent's tera captain is Dragonite. Baton Pass, evasion boosting items, and King's Rock/Razor Fang are banned. Normal Smogon clauses apply.

Building stage ends Sunday 11:59 PM GMT -5

This went through a few modifications, but ultimately decided to settle on this build. Concept is to pressure with hazard stack from Naclstack and Klefki, while also having double T-Wave suppore from Klefki and Rotom. Double status on Rotom to ensure you can try to burn the Ting-Lu. Great Tusk went through a bunch of changes until Naclstack ended up on the team freeing up Tusk to be AV. I originally wanted to be Heavy-Duty Boots as Toxic Spikes Iron Moth looked a bit annoying bar running Boots on everything not grounded an the team had no grounded p8ison, but this lets Tusk switch into Iron Moth, avoiding the 2HKO from unboosted Energy Ball after Stealth Rock. Rotom-Wash is the main D-Nite check and EQ immuntiy. Mimikyu and Volcarona are the main wincons, Tera Grass for Dondozo.

Here comes the rain (No tusks allowed)

Mimikyu @ Leftovers
Ability: Disguise
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 28 Def / 228 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split
- Destiny Bond
- Night Shade

Bringing a defensive Mimikyu with enough speed to outspeed Jolly Nite, This set also lives 3 EQs from Dragonite, Pain Split for healingwhile also punishing Ting-Lu for it's massive HP pool.

Klefki @ Damp Rock
Ability: Prankster
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rain Dance
- Magnet Rise
- Spikes
- Draining Kiss

Our Primary Rain setter, I'm unsure on the calcs, but it lives a wide range of attacks inside rain, while extremely punishable by Sub setters, it does have enough in terms of lead potential and sustain to stay around while offering pivot potential.

Kilowattrel @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Competitive
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 44 HP / 72 Def / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 136 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Volt Switch
- Thunder
- Weather Ball

The massive abuser of rain, Kilowattrel outspeeds the entire roster, by moving EVs into defence and HP, this Kilowattrel set is able to live a +1 E-Speed from D-Nite, while offering punish switching into Brambleghast with Strength Sap. Weather ball inside rain beats Offensive Iron Moth. This set also lives an Accelerock from Sashed Lycanroc.

Baxcalibur @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Thermal Exchange
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 132 Atk / 16 Def / 160 SpD / 200 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Glaive Rush
- Icicle Spear
- Crunch

Baxcalibur... This set allows a range of set up opportunities, but also allows for heavy punish on certain Pokemon, with heavy invesntment into Sp. Def and Speed, you're able to live 2 hits from Iron Moth, while outspeeding any jolly variant Dragonite. The Attack Investment allows for +1 Crunch to 2HKO any Phys. Def. Bronzong set.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Rain Dance
- Will-O-Wisp

A nice defensive pivot able to take on Iron Moth, Dragonite, Lycanroc and Dondozo, Rotom-W does what Rotom-W does.

Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Tera Blast
- Fiery Dance

Volcarona, the Tera Captain takes on a Water Tera not only to compliment itself in rain, but to also offer extra defensive properties against most of the issues that will outspeed or outdamage it. 96 Speed allows +1 Volc to outspeed and OHKO Offensive Iron Moth, while Defence and HP Investment allows for better control against Dragonite, Brambleghast (prior to tera), Lycanroc and Bronzong.

I really like the draft league format and think this is a cool idea. Here is the team I would use.

Great Tusk @ Assault Vest
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Atk / 52 Def / 112 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Ice Spinner
- Rapid Spin

out speeds base 112 speed pokemon (lyconroc and iron moth) after a rapid spin. Has coverage to 2HKO most pokemon on their team except Dondozo. Very solid all-around.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Def / 12 SpA / 104 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Volt Switch
- Discharge

enough defense to take any +1 Dragonite attack and also, great pivot vs ting-lu. Most of the team is physical attackers so having will-o-wisp is great. Hydro pump 2HKO everything it needs to so put points in SpD for more bulk to help deal with Iron Moth.

Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 56 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 196 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Tera blast
- Fiery Dance
- Psychic

This hits pretty much everything (have to run psychic to hit iron moth). Tera Steel is deal with Lyconroc and sylveon. After 1 Qdance psychic OHKO offensive Iron Moth and Volcarona lives any hit. Ting-lu, Dondozo, and Dragonite can be scary for Volcorona all running earthquake but the rest of the team is design to deal with those threats.

Klefki @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder Wave
- Magnet Rise
- Reflect
- Spikes

Klefki is very annoying. magnet rise allows it to resist basically everything minus iron moth and fire punch Dragonite (fire punch is a 3HKO). Klefki sets up spikes and thunder waves stuff.

Mimikyu @ Life Orb
Ability: Disguise
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 24 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 228 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Shadow Claw
- Shadow Sneak
- Swords Dance

This thing just sets up and wins. 228 speed lets it out speed jolly Dragonite. If Mimikyu can get a swords dance it is pretty much over.

Kilowattrel @ Focus Sash
Ability: Competitive
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Endeavor
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave
- U-turn

Baxcalibur and Naclstack aren't very good here. Naclstack lets them set up and Baxcalibur loses to everything (iron moth, lyconroc, sylveon, bronzong, and most tera dragonite). So, I would bring the bird to spread more yellow magic with thunder wave and to maybe get a nice focus sash endeavor combo off. Also, U-turn to pivot out vs Ting-lu (the only one immune to thunder wave).

Congratulations to TONE on winning Cycle 1! Your submission has been added to the hall of fame.

Cycle 2:
Your Team:
:dragonite: (tera) :great tusk: :gengar: :kingambit: :rotom-heat: :gardevoir: :vaporeon: :grafaiai:

Opponent’s Team:

:palafin: (tera) :garchomp: :meowscarada: :klefki: :dondozo: :gengar: :avalugg: :ursaring:

We’ll be looking at two more strong squads that advanced to the round of 16 in the kickoff tournament this time. Both feature menacing round 1 tera picks that allow plenty of room for creativity, alongside strong supporting casts that also feature potentially cheaper ways of checking top pokemon. How will you deal with the menace of tera Palafin?

Submissions are due by Sunday February 26th, 11:59 PM GMT -5!

Good morning, here are my sets for the second match up: https://pokepast.es/2e3e2a42a7fb71b5

:dragonite:
Dragonite @ Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Atk / 160 Def / 44 Spe
Brave Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Tera Blast
- Thunder Wave
- Roost
Dragonite's idea is to make itself a suitable defensive response to Palafin, Garchomp, Meowscarada, and Dondozo. Hitting both water types super effectively with tera blast and being hit with resisted stab options from the same 4 mentioned above it's suitable to slow the opponent's offensedown just a smidge. Thunder wave is primarily for gengar and meowscarada which are speedy enough. Speed isnt incredibly necessary on Dragonite because the only meaningful Pokémon it has the ursaring, which doesn't need much investment. If Ursaring comes, it'll be a breaker which likely means adamant so that's what the Dragonite's speed is crept for.
:rotom-heat:
Rotom-Heat @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Overheat
- Foul Play
- Volt Switch
Rotom-Heat's job is to provide free momentum as the defensive typing is fantsatic into klefki and avalugg, two main support pieces I could see coming. It's a half decent Garchomp/Meowscarada switch in but won't be alive many turns into the game. Foul play to prevent Garchomp from subbing on it, wisp to continue to spread status around the team.
:Gardevoir:
Gardevoir @ Leftovers
Ability: Trace
Tera Type: Psychic
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Def / 140 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Moonblast
- Draining Kiss
- Psychic
- Trick Room
Gardevoir is a fantastic mid-game offensive piece once klefki is chipped. Dondozo is the only notable pokemon that could underspeed in trick room, but 150 base hp makes it a perfect target for bulky Gardevoir's draining kiss to recover health. Klefki/Gengar make for squishy fairy resists, so fairy move spam is a great boon to our offensive capabilities.
:great-tusk:
Great Tusk @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 132 HP / 4 Atk / 120 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Bulk Up
- Taunt
Great Tusk's job is to be a late game cleaner. Booster energy with this spread allows for a speed boost. Close combat hits everything aside from Gengar, from which knock off hits plainly. Air balloon Gengar being a possible set is what makes me think knock off over ground stab; I'd rather account for hitting into a Colbur berry for guaranteed damage than being walled by Gengar. Defensive investment is for possibly having to take a Palafin jet punch or scarf meowscarada flower trick (which bypasses defensive boosts from bulk up).
:gengar:
Gengar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hex
- Sludge Bomb
- Will-O-Wisp
- Substitute
The status spam on the rest of the team is in service of this Gengar set. Being able to freely click hex on a burned/paralyzed pokemon is a fantastic way to allow Gengar to soften up the team for a late game Great Tusk clean sweep. Sludge bomb is for the Meowscarada in case you should be in a situation where you are behind a substitute in front of Meowscarada.
:kingambit:
Kingambit @ Chople Berry
Ability: Supreme Overlord
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Kowtow Cleave
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
Kingambit is a pokemon that freely switches in on Klefki, sets rocks, then tabs out until later in the game once one or two Pokemon on our team are dead. Unaware from Dondozo does not stop Supreme Overlord from boosting our attack so Kowtow Cleave will be able to do a good amount of damage. I fully expect body press Dondozo, thus the chople berry. Taunt is to prevent Dondozo from resting so that we can revenge it much more easily. Jet punch outspeeding sucker punch means it isn't worth it to me over a hard hitting dark stab.
