Congrats to Platinum God n1n1 for winning this week with his Swords Dance set! You'll be in the hall of fame. Anyways, here's our next mon.

Cycle 6: Tapu-Fini
:sm/tapu-fini:

Tapu Fini has been one of the best pokemon in the metagame, either providing a sweeping threat that isn't easily KO'd, or a support mon with the coveted heal pulse. Your job is to make a different set that is great but not on the stratadex, GL!

:ss/tapu_fini:
Tapu Fini @ Leftovers / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 148 SpA / 108 Spe
Modest Nature
- Muddy Water
- Moonblast
- Psych Up
- Protect

On teams that use a strong setup sweeper like Kommo-o, Volcarona, or Necrozma, Tapu Fini can use Psych Up to copy their boosts and create an alternative win condition for the team. It can also help against opponents to punish their own setup, and you can use it on Weakness Policy holders. While Psych Up is a little used move, Tapu Fini's combination of bulk and just above average Speed and Special Attack make it one of the few Pokemon that can viably make use of it. The item choice is team dependent (depends on whether you prefer immediate survivability or long-term sustainability). The EVs outspeed Kartana at +1 (which can be adjusted to the team) and always OHKO Dragapult with Moonblast, which conveniently leaves exactly enough for max HP.

Tapu Fini @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpA
Bold Nature

- Gravity
- Muddy Water

- Protect/Blizzard

Gravity is helpful with Fini's primary stab move, Muddy Water however Gravity's main use for it's teammates. Gravity is helpful with ground type attackers such as Landorous. It also allows you to use non 100% acc moves without drawbacks like Blizzard, Muddy Water, Thunder and various others. This set runs Muddy Water and Moonblast for Stab and a choice of Blizzard
And Protect. Blizzard allows it to hit monslike Rilla and Amoonguss harder while Protect is well... Protect.

Haze + Soak Tapu Fini

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 124 SpA / 32 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Brine
- Nature's Madness
- Soak
- Haze

General idea

Nature's Madness is perfect on a defensive monster because it doesn't need SpA investment to be effective, whereas Brine is good alongside Nature's Madness due its doubled base power if the opponent is already at 50% hp or less from the former attacking move.

With base 85 Spe Tapu Fini is not that fast as a Taunt user and with 95 base SpA, it doesn't hit hard if not invested.
I decided to use two different support moves for the team in the form of:
  • Soak
Really underrated move because it changes the opponent's typing into Water type and this is useful to get rid of its other typing, thus changing its STAB moves and its defensive typing (good if you have a partner with Electric and/or Grass moves) in order to lower the defensive synergy of the opponent's team.
  • Haze
With low offenses, Tapu Fini is quite passive unless 2 Calm Mind or 1 CM + massive EVs investment. Haze neuters opposing Intimidates (and similar abilities and moves) and allows our teammates to spam moves like Close Combat, Superpower and Overheat, which have high base power but an high drawback.

EVs (spread) and item
  • Stolen from the dex) The EV spread allows Tapu Fini to survive a Leaf Blade from 4 Atk Miracle Seed Kartana as well as a Shadow Ball from a +2 Life Orb Spectrier.

Timid Nature

- Soak / Ice Beam

Most Tapu Fini are reliant on bulk and resistances to check a few threats like Urshifu-R and Kyurem-B, where the former can U-turn out safely and the latter gets off significant damage with Fusion Bolt before it has to fear a Moonblast. Instead, this set outspeeds them and gets off significant damage. It also enables Kartana by using Soak before Kartana slices through something with Leaf Blade. Trick enables you to be less useless against Amoonguss, Porygon2, and other bulky threats as well.

Here is the pitch

Has the offensive meta hurt you. Are you wondering "gee how do I use cm fini rn when I barely get a chance to press cm against the teams I really want to?' or maybe you are wondering "Why am I bad at this game when I can barely think past a first order anaylsis?"

Well you should try the new choice mind fini. Out-speed things you have no business out-speeding, or do more damage than you have no business dealing. Critics rave that fast muddy water accuracy drops like a certain seahorse dragon give a feeling that only matches that of giving a hug to grandma. Thats right. Grandma.

Ut oh!! The team you are facing is too bulky? Or your extra speed/power actually mean very little in this mu? Or maybe there are just some certain mons like a pesky mushroom that are gonna switch into your juicy moonblast. For a limited time offering you can press trick!! Guess what!! You can now calm mind with your newly found berry!! Don't knock the prospect of +1 damage with an above average fini speed.

Here is a funny battle showing what choice fini can do.

Order today while supplies last (Not liable for losses, losses are good, only winners lose).

Reserving Terrain Extender
:ss/tapu-fini:
Tapu Fini @ Terrain Extender
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 236 HP / 100 Def / 44 SpA / 128 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Muddy Water
- Heal Pulse
- Moonblast
- Protect
(Take my words with a bit of salt, I don't really have much competitive experience in this metagame so let's try to not die)
Since Terrain Extender boosts the turn count of Misty Surge, I wanted to get a bit creative here (also Odd EVs lol :psynervous:.) Normally Tapu Fini would would just be our bulky Heal Pulse mon but in this set with Terrain Extender you're free to be wise on how you pull out your moveset here. Terrain Extender helps Tapu Fini to be protected from Toxic or Amoonguss more turns than often. It can live from an unboosted, no Grassy Surge Kartana (Doubles Fast Set used here):
4 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 236 HP / 100 Def Tapu Fini: 266-314 (78.2 - 92.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Kartana Sacred Sword vs. 236 HP / 100 Def Tapu Fini: 44-52 (12.9 - 15.2%) -- possible 7HKO
Kyurem-Black is also not enough to OHKO it:
112 SpA Teravolt Kyurem-Black Ice Beam vs. 236 HP / 128 SpD Tapu Fini: 45-54 (13.2 - 15.8%) -- possible 7HKO
0 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-Black Fusion Bolt vs. 236 HP / 100 Def Tapu Fini: 186-220 (54.7 - 64.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
112 SpA Teravolt Kyurem-Black Earth Power vs. 236 HP / 128 SpD Tapu Fini: 61-72 (17.9 - 21.1%) -- possible 5HKO
112 SpA Teravolt Kyurem-Black Icy Wind vs. 236 HP / 128 SpD Tapu Fini: 27-33 (7.9 - 9.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Rillaboom is obviously a threat due to an OHKO from Wooden Hammer from Grassy Surge, but as long as you're able to control your threats wisely you should be able to live in the nick of time.

Choice Specs Fini. This is different from Mack Knife's post since it has more focus on damage output and pivotting, without non-damaging moves

Tapu Fini @ Choice Specs
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 4 Def / 232 SpA / 24 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Muddy Water
- Dazzling Gleam
- Ice Beam

This set focuses on utilising Fini's excellent typing both defensively by appropriate switch-ins and offensively, with of course the Misty Terrain bonus. Muddy Water and Moonblast are self-explanatory. Dazzling Gleam gives reliable spread damage and theoretically deals more than Moonblast (60 per target, 120 in total) whilst maintaining OHKOes on Urshifu and Dragapult. Ice Beam lets you 2HKO Amoonguss and a 75.4% to 2HKO AV Rillaboom if you hit it on the switch-in factoring in Grassy Terrain recovery. I rank the moves in the order of what I consider to be most useful and commonly picked, in case you wanted to use another move like Scald (always OHKOes no bulk Heatran and standard 252 HP / 60 SpD Lando-T whilst potentially burning a Rilla switch-in, though Ice Beam also works well in the latter scenario), Hydro Pump (inaccurate nuke that OHKOes standard Incineroar and Diancie) or Trick (messes with Amoonguss and cannot be mitigated by Regenerator as well as potential switch-ins like Rilla).

We priortise HP EVs since, given Fini's naturally high Def / SpD but low HP, it really helps with durability, which helps with pivoting Fini in and out. 8n - 1 to avoid a SR number. 24 Spe enables Fini to outspeed Zeroara under Tailwind. The 4 Def enables this:
4 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 248 HP / 4 Def Tapu Fini: 288-342 (83.9 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Obviously you shouldn't attempt to tank this hit, but it gives a 50% of surviving it from full HP if you're forced to risk it, and Kartana is super common. Rest in SpA. Modest is needed for some OHKOes and 2HKOes. Feel free to move some EVs into Speed if using Icy Wind or Sticky Web: 108 Spe EVs lets you outrun -1 Kartana.

Useful offensive calcs:
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zygarde: 422-498 (118.2 - 139.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 88 SpD Assault Vest Kyurem-Black: 270-318 (59.6 - 70.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 164 HP / 0 SpD Kyurem-Black: 440-522 (101.8 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 20 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 266-314 (65.8 - 77.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zapdos-Galar: 440-522 (137 - 162.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO. The OHKO also means you don't risk Moonblast procing a SpA drop and by extension Defiant.
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Moltres-Galar: 336-396 (104.6 - 123.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Muddy Water vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 272-324 (84.2 - 100.3%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Muddy Water vs. 248 HP / 160+ SpD Incineroar: 240-284 (61 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Muddy Water vs. 252 HP / 116 SpD Diancie: 186-218 (61.1 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Muddy Water vs. +1 0 HP / 4 SpD Volcarona: 186-218 (59.8 - 70%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragapult: 320-380 (100.9 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: 384-452 (112.6 - 132.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Ice Beam vs. 232 HP / 188+ SpD Amoonguss: 226-268 (52.9 - 62.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 100 SpD Assault Vest Rillaboom: 202-238 (50.1 - 59%) -- 75.4% chance to 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Rillaboom: 344-406 (100.5 - 118.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
232+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Fini Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Kartana: 187-221 (72.2 - 85.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

If using Hydro Pump, shift the Def EV to SpA, as 236 SpA guarantees a OHKO on the default spread Incineroar with Hydro Pump (pending accuracy).

Whirlpool Fini!

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 88 Def / 148 SpA / 24 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Moonblast
- Whirlpool
- Protect

Without Gothitelle, where can we turn for a bulky trapper? Whirlpool Fini of course! The idea is Fini is a great switch in to many threats, and once on the field it clicks whirlpool as the opponent brings in their Fini counter, thus trapping it. From there you can protect and bring in an ally that can beat the Fini counter.

The spread outspeeds and OHKOs Dragapult in TW with moonblast, dump in defense.

Congrats to talkingtree for winning with his Choice Scarf set. Also congrats for him being the first person to get 2 wins! You're set will be added to the hall of fame. Anyways here's our seventh Pokemon!

Week 7: Kyurem-B

Kyurem-B has been one of the best (If not the best pokemon) in the DOU metagame. Its the only mon to my knowlodge to maintain its Tier 1 placement throughout SS. Its main defining sets are is AV set, which is great utility and its able to take any hit bar Urshifu-R's Banded Close Combat. Next is its LO set, which is great as a mixed attacker while having great power and even greater coverage in Ice+Ground+Electric hitting almost everything for super-effective damage. Your task is to figure out a set that is different from the 2!

Banned Sets

Freeze Shock + Power Herb
:ss/kyurem-black:
Kyurem-Black @ Power Herb
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 44 HP / 204 Atk / 204 Def / 56 SpD
Jolly Nature
- Freeze Shock
- Fusion Bolt
- Dragon Dance
- Protect

Why do you want to use this?
Freeze Shock is an underrated move that has a 30% chance to paralyze, the only downside is that it takes 2 turns to charge. That's where the Power Herb comes in - it can dismiss the 2-turn charge once and do massive damage on your side. Electric-Ice is usually a very powerful coverage typing so it makes good use in this set.

This set allows you to counter Rillaboom who would usually click Fake Out and you would only 2HKO back, however you can fire back a Freeze Shock that's able to OHKO it instead.

204 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-Black Freeze Shock vs. 248 HP / 36 Def Rillaboom: 572-674 (141.9 - 167.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:heatran:
Heatran definetly works as a teammate here being able to count for each other's weaknesses, however both are weak to Fighting so you might wanna watch out.

Chople Berry 3 Attacks

:bw/kyurem-black:
Kyurem-Black @ Chople Berry
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 140 HP / 80 Def / 136 SpA / 152 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry
- Earth Power
- Icy Wind
- Protect

This can be thought of as pretty much AV Kyurem-B but for the physical side, being EV'd to take physical attacks reliably and then some. Chople Berry on the set means that this set is capable of stomaching even Choice Band Urshifu-R's Close Combat, the strongest physical attack in the tier pretty much. This is a set that can pretty much do whatever you wanted AVKB to do, except it's focused on checking a different set of targets; at the expense of losing out on some match-ups, particularly against PsySpam, this set is much more capable against the physical-based HOs featuring CB Zygarde, CB Urshifu, and double Grass. It's still pretty bulky of course, as it's still bulk-invested KB.

As a defensive set, care must be taken with the spread. The Speed is important as this lets Kyurem-B get the jump on Zygarde as well as Heatran, among others. The Special Attack investment is specifically to get the OHKO on 0/4 Heatran. The investment on bulk is meant to live CB Urshifu CC even with Rocks up; despite SR being not as popular, I felt that it was important enough that Chople Kyurem-B actually gets to fulfill its premise even in the edge case. If you don't care about that, 220 HP dump is probably fine lol

As this isn't AV, this set can actually use Protect, which can be pretty invaluable for positioning. EP is for coverage, and Icy Wind is for utility--not much else to say there. The most pivotal moveset choice here is, of course, having Freeze Dry; its ability to hit Water-types such as Urshifu-R and Tapu Fini means that Fusion Bolt isn't as necessary, which also further meants that I no longer have to make tough EV spread decisions due to no longer being mixed. The loss of Fusion Bolt isn't important as that only was really meant to win the CM Tapu Fini match-up, which has been on the downlow as of late. Freeze-Dry is epic as it sort of does both Ice Beam's and Fusion Bolt's jobs in being a STAB attack and hitting Water-types. Of course, it's weaker, but them's the breaks; it honestly shouldn't be felt that much, not for what you want KB to do anyway. If you really want you can use Ice Beam over Icy Wind, but I digress.

136 SpA Teravolt Kyurem-Black Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 324-384 (100.3 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 140 HP / 80 Def Chople Berry Kyurem-Black: 271-319 (63.6 - 74.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Choice Band Zygarde Thousand Arrows vs. 140 HP / 80 Def Kyurem-Black: 139-165 (32.6 - 38.7%) -- 98.8% chance to 3HKO
252+ SpA Necrozma Expanding Force (120 BP) vs. 140 HP / 0 SpD Kyurem-Black in Psychic Terrain: 226-267 (53 - 62.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
