Dewpider, Araquanid Discussion

The ability is really strong, yes, but that's why they gave it to a shitmon. The question is of course, why not just give Araquanid a good stat spread instead of creating a godlike ability that will undoubtedly end up on some other Pokemon and make it broken beyond believe?
Other way around bud. They gave it stats to match its OP ability.

It's ability, unlike stats, makes it very powerful with Water attacks but nothing else. This gives him an interesting way of being efficiently hard hitting on physical and special sides but with the catch of only hitting hard with Water types moves. High stats gets rid of that idea and let's all of his moves hit hard creating a weakness/limitation to balance out his strength.

Holy crud, just read the edit. So essentially when using a water move this thing effectively has 140 base attack, 100 base Sp. Attack, plus double whatever investment you put into it.
That's not how it works actually. Just like with Huge Power/Pure Power, the actual stat is doubled, not the base stat. If I'm not calculating it wrong, when using a Water move, uninvested neutral Araquanid has the equivalent of base 118 SpAtk and and 158 Atk. When fully invested with a positive nature, it's the equivalent of 149 SpAtk or 189 Atk.

Except that... no. The damages are doubled after the STAB or the rain boost for example.
So it's way more that just doubling power/atk.

No, it's the same thing. It's multiplication, it doesn't matter whether you "apply" STAB or Rain or the stat boost "first".

Where are its eyes? Are the eyes the little reddish orange things behind the headlight looking things? Or are those headlights the eyes?

Also, this Pokemon is beautiful. The fact that it's literally a 5'11 water type spider is amazing to me.
The highlights are the eyes.

The squiggly lines are the pupils, when it faints those squiggly lines turn into straight lines like they blinked or something.

Dewpider same thing, those rounded lighter rings in its eyes are pupils and they go straight across when it blinks or faints.

Name one example of an ability on a pokemon that has been more of a forced nonsense reach than this?

Thank you very much. I wonder why they made Araquanid so big. A lot of people assume it's a small spider but it's almost 6 feet tall.

Actually isn't the spider it's based on really tiny? I have so many questions about the design, it's almost alien like. Like the UB's.

Thing is, it actually makes sense from a flavor perspective for Sticky Web not to be available to all spider Pokemon. While all spiders do produce silk, a lot of them don't spin webs. Diving bell spiders do create webs underwater, though (albeit just as a home and to provide structure to their diving bell, not for prey capture), so it oughta be able to learn it. Galvantula actually shouldn't, though, since based on its morphology it seems to be a hybrid of a tarantula and a jumping spider and neither of those families are web-builders. Ariados is kinda debatable, since Spinarak is based on Theridion grallator (a web-builder) and that would make me think it should keep that, but Ariados' morphology is partway between that of web-building spiders and certain ant-mimic and wasp-mimic jumping spiders (including the delightfully strange Orsima ichneumon).

Anyway, to make sure this post isn't totally off-topic, what are your thoughts on the possible utility of Lunge over Leech Life as the Bug STAB of choice? Because you're not doing all that much damage with Leech Life, the recovery will be pretty limited, but the Attack drop could potentially be pretty useful for Araquanid's longevity (and that of of its partner in doubles).
Ah... that would make sense. Still doesn't explain how a water strider is able to learn it though... You seem to be quite an expert on arachnids haha.

But after looking at what Lunge does, considering it's the same base power, I would have to agree with it being potentially better than Leech Life, at least on a more defensive set. 68/92/132 bulk is obviously more leaning towards the special side, so an attack drop could help with its less but still decent physical defense.

It makes sense from a fluff/flavor perspective: the bubble surrounding it softens the impact of its tackles, bites, etc. so it has a low base Attack. On the other hand, it's also one of the few Water-types to have literal water on its body (like how many Fire-types have literal fire on their tail, back, or what have you), so it also makes sense for it to get such a hyper-specialized water-themed ability.

Here's a video of Araquanid and Pelipper in a doubles battle. It survived a Z Move used by Arcanine with Sunny Day and OHKO'd it the next turn with Liquidation. And it almost OHKO'd Tyranitar but it survived due to Sunny Day.

Dude, Araquanid is HUGE! I love it!

Edit: Araquanids water Z-Move in the rain has to be DEVASTATING!

Edit: Water Bubble also doubles the power of Water-type attacks. This is apparently less important to Game Freak than being a Water Sport + Water Veil combo. This is now 100% Confirmed
So does it also reduce the dmg done to the partner in doubles? Or are we talking Singles right now and forever?

I had to check again the damage formula to see my mistake, I really thought it wasn't only a multiplication. But indeed, it doesn't matter.

if you think this buggo is frail you are clearly wrong. it is able to tank 90% of super effective hits and deal near 80% back if the attack isn't resisted lol

The issue is, it's meant to come in on good matches but after stealth rocks and chip damage, it can only come in to nuke stuff a couple times. (Bring it in on heatran, lose 25%, something resist is brought in that outspeeds, araquanid leaves, comes in later, loses another 25% and basically 25% from chip damage both times etc..)

Stats don't make bad typing bulky. Avalugg isn't OU.

I can see this needing wish or healing wish support, maybe grassy terrain with tapu bulu.

i completely agree with you that if hazards are up it will severely weaken this pokemons defensive purposes but i see it as a slow revenge killer that doesnt have priority but is fatter and can restore HP with leech life and the perfect mon for trick room. plus the fact that it threatens so much of the OU meta, and thus forcing out switches, is such a positive as it can easily give you initiative. also its typing isnt as bad as i first thought. only 3 weaknesses in flying, electric and rock is so good. and with Duggy most likely running the OU meta flying is its only real problem. Offensively the only resists ive found are mega ven, amoongus and ferrothorn (which can be trapped and killed by Gothitelle if shadow tag isnt banned) and volcanion which duggy traps and Revenge kills. it also is an amazing sclad switch in and punisher! not very many offensive mons can reliably stop and scare out scald spammers without risking a burn or a large chunck of HP being taken, but now Araq can punish keldeo, slowbro, and starmie (offensive starmie calc 252 SpA Life Orb Starmie Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Araquanid: 126-149 (37 - 43.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO) I dont think this mon will be OU but it will definitely be top tier UU if not BL solely due to the stealth rock and speed weakness. but to be fair, every team carries a spinner or a defogger so you never know.

This sounds a lot like dragalge, which has better coverage and typing, but still can't hold its own due to being killed before it can do anything or revenge killed even harder.

It'll be a fun mon, I can see using this in OU even if its placed in UU or BL.

Here's a video of Araquanid and Pelipper in a doubles battle. It survived a Z Move used by Arcanine with Sunny Day and OHKO'd it the next turn with Liquidation. And it almost OHKO'd Tyranitar but it survived due to Sunny Day.

That's a pretty big story spoiler that Blue is fought in a Double Battle and uses Z-Moves :/ I would've liked not to know that before playing the game...

Oh, and I didn't actually watch the video. I got that just by seeing the title and reading your post.

Pokedex entry from Moon:

"Despite what its appearance suggests, it cares for others. If it finds vulnerable, weak Pokémon, it protectively brings them into its water bubble."

That's actually really sweet lol. But I wonder if it knows that its actually drowning them.....

Pokedex entry from Sun:

"It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown."
