Gengar finds a niche on Poison teams thanks to its secondary Ghost typing and unique coverage, allowing it to serve as a solid alternative to Iron Moth. Shadow Ball threatens Ghost- and Psychic-type Pokemon like Gholdengo, Pecharunt, and Hatterene. Thunderbolt provides solid coverage by hitting dangerous Flying- and Water-types like Corviknight, Pelipper, and Primarina. Focus Blast allows Gengar to deal with Dark-, Normal-, and Steel-type threats in Hydreigon, Ursaluna-B, Heatran, and Archaludon, while Dazzling Gleam provides a less risky option to hit Dark-types along with Dragon-types like Walking Wake. Finally, Trick allows Gengar to disrupt special walls like Alolan Muk, Iron Hands, and Ting-Lu by granting them a useless Choice Specs, along with Choice locking Kingambit, which can prove problematic for Poison teams. Icy Wind, however, has the solid role of removing Landorus and Gliscor, which pose significant threats to Poison teams.

Amoonguss can take hits from Water- and Ground-types that Gengar cannot handle such as Ogerpon-W, Swampert, and Great Tusk, along with using Spore to grant Gengar safe entry. Amoonguss can also use Foul Play to remove threats to Gengar such as Dragapult and Mimikyu. Galarian Weezing threatens potent Dark-types like Meowscarada, Ting-Lu, and Roaring Moon thanks to its Fairy-type STAB move and Will-O-Wisp. Galarian Weezing can also use Defog to remove entry hazards, ensuring Gengar stays healthy. Toxapex can handle priority from threats like Scizor, Mimikyu, and Lokix attempting to remove Gengar, along with being able to handle threats like Chien-Pao and Barraskewda. Overqwil pairs nicely with Gengar with its immense physical bulk, (AC) being able to take hits from fast physical Ghost- (RC) and Psychic-types such as Ceruledge, Iron Boulder, and Gallade. Overqwil's entry hazards also provide utility in chipping down special walls such as Hisuian Goodra and Ting-Lu, which can both prove problematic to Gengar. In return, (AC) Overqwil appreciates Gengar's Ghost typing allowing it to block Rapid Spin from the likes of Forretress and Tentacruel. Alolan Muk can handle special attacking Ghost- and Dark-type threats like Flutter Mane, Spectrier, Greninja, and Darkrai. Galarian Slowking can switch into revenge killers Gengar can struggle with, such as Choice Scarf Latias and Choice Scarf Enamorus, and threaten them back with its strong coverage moves. Both Sneasler and Okidogi can handle Dark-types like Alolan Muk, Hisuian Samurott, and Kingambit while appreciating Gengar removing Ghost- and Psychic-types like Gholdengo, Hatterene, and Slowbro. Choice Scarf Sneasler can also blitz past problematic foes such as Hoopa-U, Hisuian Goodra, and Chien-Pao without worry. Okidogi, meanwhile, appreciates Gengar weakening physical walls like Galarian Weezing, Toxapex, and Sableye that prevent it from setting up safely. In response, Okidogi can handle Dark-type menaces like Kingambit, Meowscarada, and Roaring Moon without any issues.

Shadow Ball is the STAB of choice threatening Ghost- and Psychic-type threats like Gholdengo, Pecharunt, Hatterene, and Metagross (eeh for metagross, its not like Iron Moth deals with these mons too. What exactly is Gengar's selling point then? Perhaps its trick + spinblocker that heavily punishes stuff and actually does stuff vs steel because Heatran). Thunderbolt provides solid coverage hitting dangerous Flying- and Water-types like Corviknight, Pelipper, and Primarina. Focus Blast allows for Gengar to deal with Dark-, Normal-, and Steel-type threats like Hydreigon, Ursaluna-B, Heatran, and Archaludon while Dazzling Gleam provides a less risky option to hit Dark-types along with nailing Dragon-types like Walking Wake. Finally Trick allows for Gengar to disrupt special walls like Alolan Muk, Iron Hands, and Ting-Lu by granting them a useless Choice Specs (also locks kingambit in a pinch, which is great). Icy Wind however has the solid role of removing Landorus and Gliscor which pose significant threats to Poison teams.

Overqwil's entry hazards also provide utility in chipping down Special Walls such as Hisuian Goodra and Ting-Lu which can prove problematic to Gengar. Alolan Muk can handle Special attacking Ghost- and Dark-type threats like Flutter Mane, Spectrier, Greninja, and Darkrai. Galarian Slowking can switch into special threats Gengar cannot break past such as Choice Scarf Latias (scarf latias is less of a cant break past and more of outspeeds and removes, and technically you can deal with heatran. Maybe revenge-killers instead?) and Heatran and threaten them back with its strong coverage. Both Sneasler and Okidogi can handle Dark-types like Alolan Muk and Hisuian Samurott (Kingambit needs to be added) and appreciate Gengar removing Ghost- and Psychic-types like Gholdengo, Hatterene, and Slowbro.
