ew pentatonix boat why
DLC 2, aka The Crown Tundra has been released, and with it the onset of legendaries and pseudo-legendaries, certain to rock the competitive landscape of 1v1. Alongside this, we have old faces returning to be tested again in the metagame, to see if the power of their opponents can now hold them back from absolute domination. This thread will be dedicated to announcing and discussing the various quickbans in this chaotic time in 1v1, as well as when the 'introductory period' of the 1v1 metagame is over (in reference to our 1v1 Council Policy).

Don't spam post in this thread, or do other obnoxiously formatted posts like one word posts, caps lock spam, etc. Outside of that, just stay on topic of potential quickbans, and you're golden. (Yes, you can post (good) related memes)

1v1 Council has finished voting on the first slate of bans.
This slate was formatted such that any council member could include a Pokemon for voting if they saw fit. These Pokemon would have been suspected as potentially problematic in the Gen 8 metagame, and either were proven to be so through testing or were shown to not be as problematic as initially thought. To clarify, voting Do Not Ban on a Pokemon on Slate 1 does not mean it could not be considered for a Quickban on another potential slate.

Anyway, with that out of the way,

Just as quickly as they returned, they're back in 1v1 Ubers, where they belong. Marshadow and Magearna have been quickbanned from 1v1.

Marshadow was never previously tested in the Gen 8 1v1 metagame, as it was clear the pre-Home metagame version of Gen 8 could not handle Marshadow's nearly unrivaled Speed, unresisted STAB coverage, and straight-up unfair unique move, denying setup as a playstyle and going through Substitute. Marshadow had been quickbanned to Ubers in the previous Generation, but with the removal of Marshadow's absurdly strong signature Z move, there was potential for it to be balanced in a Gen 8 post-Legendary metagame. However, it is immediately clear that Marshadow warps the metagame around it - Marshadow's Speed gives it ample opportunity to set up defensively on anything slower, with its functional bulk alongside items allowing it to tank attacks from frail, faster opponents. Even with the emphasis Gen 8 has on Fairy-types, Marshadow has the capabilities to beat back basically anything that does not have this typing, unnecessarily restricting teambuilding. Even its most basic set of Life Orb is a terror in the metagame, and as such it is unanimously banned.

Magearna's ban follows the same old story from its previous ban. To summarize, it has ridiculous coverage, ridiculous utility options, ridiculous bulk, and ridiculous ambiguity. Magearna can be custom made to fit on every team, and can be crafted to beat almost everything in the metagame. Generation 8 has done nothing but shower Magearna with viable options it can use, and not even the onset of new legendaries and viable Fire-types can affect its broken status. For this, it is quickbanned unanimously.

The other considerations for Slate 1 were Power Construct, Dragonite, Genesect, Jirachi, and Necrozma. Power Construct received a 5-1 DNB vote, and all others were unanimously voted DNB. All Ban/Do Not Ban reasonings for all Pokemon can be found on this spreadsheet.

Banned deucer.
Round 2 of slate voting has concluded

With this being the 2nd slate, the main idea behind how it was structured was effectively to act as cleanup for everything else of note left in the meta after the 1st slate cleared out the major problem children. Hopefully after this slate there won't be any further need for additional slates, but rather individual quickbans if something new comes to prominence after the results here.
With the results of the most recent voting slate, Dragonite has been banned from 1v1! Of course, with this being a quickban, there always lies the potential of consideration for a resuspect down the road, but for the time being, Dragonite's impact upon the meta has been more oppressing than otherwise, hence its removal.
Even before the DLC arrived, there were concerns over Dragonite's impact upon the metagame, and those concerns only came to grow exponentially once Crown Tundra was upon us. While Dragonite's development in the SM metagame was more of a slow burn with it starting off with only Choice Band and then slowly coming to adapt towards Z-moves and Choice Scarf months or even years later, its development in the SS metagame was much more rapid, with plenty of sets between Band, Scarf, Weakness Policy, Mixed, and so forth all coming to light at once, almost immediately making Dragonite an oppressing presence in the metagame, especially in these past few days after Magearna's removal. Pretty much every team had to have something between a powerful Ice user, since not much else can outright OHKO it, a Haban Dragon to pick up the 2HKO, or an outright stall Pokemon in order to wall it. With that in mind, it is no surprise that the rapidly developing metagame simply cannot afford to adhere to such strict limitations being put in place by a single Pokemon, hence its ban.

The other considerations for Slate 2 were Jirachi, Custap Berry, and Endure. All three were unanimously voted DNB. All Ban/Do Not Ban reasonings for everything voted on can be found on this spreadsheet.

Tagging Kris and/or The Immortal to implement.
