Project Core Analysis Workshop (Week 3: Suicune + Ferrothorn: Partners)

Garchomp @ Lum Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Swords Dance / Stone Edge

Garchomp provides this core with Stealth Rock while also being able to check Talonflame, Nidoking and Volcarona. With a Swords Dance set, it can also help Heracross to weaken bulky Pokemon like Landorus-T, Slowbro and Ferrothorn. Garchomp also enjoys Thundurus scaring out Skarmory and threatening Thunder Wave on faster Pokemon while Garchomp can act as a secondary check to Talonflame.

Due to somewhat limited activity, I'll be adding all three submissions as partners to the last core.

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Protect

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

Figured we'd handle Vincune this week, since its been pretty popular as of late. Suicune makes for a potent stallbreaker and win condition with this set, combining its massive bulk with the ability to PP stall certain moves in order to set up multiple Calm Minds. Ferrothorn partners up nicely with Suicune, as Suicune loves Spikes and even Leech Seed healing, and Ferrothorn can help deal with some problematic mons such as Latios, Latias, Thundurus, Raikou, and Manaphy. In return, Suicune is able to force out threats such as Heatran, Talonflame, Volcanion, and Mega Scizor, though it must beware being statused. The two also form the beginnings of a FWG core and have good synergy with a number of common mons on balance teams.

You'll have until the 13th to post threats to this core.

NP Thundurus obviously threatens Suicune with Thunderbolts, and Ferrothorn doesn't appreciate boosted Focus Blasts either.

Thundurus (M) @ Leftovers / Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast

EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
- Recover

Reuniclus doesn't care about the core and can keep racking up boosts while healing up with Recover.

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 168 HP / 252 SpA / 88 Spe
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Fire
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. +2 252 HP / 40 SpD Suicune: 206-246 (50.9 - 60.8%) -- 89.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 332-392 (94.3 - 111.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
Magnezone traps and OHKOs Ferrothorn, which is problematic for Suicune in and of itself, but Specs Thunderbolts will do heavy damage to Suicune, and in fact it cannot boost up high enough that Magnezone's Thunderbolts won't break its Substitutes. Suicune can drain Tbolt PP all the way down, but it takes so much damage in the process that Magnezone has effectively done its job.

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Roost

252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. +1 252 HP / 0 SpD Suicune: 180-214 (44.5 - 52.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Charizard Y in Sun: 102-122 (34.3 - 41%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Mega Charizard Y obviously OHKOs Ferrothorn and switches in on either STAB, while Solar Beam deals heavy damage to Suicune, who needs +2 to outpace Roost. It has the added bonus of a burn immunity and reliable recovery, meaning that it can check the core repeatedly if you keep Stealth Rocks away.

Breloom @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Spore
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Focus Punch / Swords Dance / Force Palm

Immune to Leech Seed, uses Ferrothorn for a free Focus Punch (onto a teammate) or Swords Dance. Ignores Sub with Bullet Seed and still deals almost 50% with a single hit (i.e. assuming it both hits sub and deals the minimum number of hits). It needs to be careful coming in on Suicune though, because it risks a burn.

252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (1 hit) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Suicune: 156-187 (38.6 - 46.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Suicune: 468-561 (115.8 - 138.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 190-226 (53.9 - 64.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Force Palm vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 283-335 (80.3 - 95.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Breloom @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Superpower
- Rock Tomb

Penny saved is still a fucking penny
Mega-Medicham - Has a 80% chance to KO suicune after rocks due to no defensive investment and obviously fucks up ferrothorn.

Manectric @ Manectite
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Overheat
- Hidden Power Ice

Mega Manectric is a huge threat to the core, 2HKOing Suicune with thunderbolt while also OKHKOing Ferrothorn with Overheat, and the fact that it fails to 2HKO Suicune after it racks up (a) boost(s) doesn't really matter since Vincune lacks recovery.
252 SpA Manectric Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 40 SpD Suicune: 218-258 (53.9 - 63.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Manectric Overheat vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 372-440 (105.6 - 125%) -- guaranteed OHKO
P.S: Flamethrower Manectric is dong, don't use it lol

To be honest, any good offensive grass type threaten those two Pokemon greatly. Doing Serperior.

Serperior @ Life Orb
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Dragon Pulse
- Glare / Taunt / Giga Drain / Synthesis

Serperior is able to come in onto Suicune with ease and can threaten it to switch out. Serperior carries HP Fire which handles Ferrothorn. The last moves also help against some of the partners that also does well against that core and not just those two pokemon alone. For example, Glare / Dragon Pulse helps against M-Latias which helps that core not get demolished by Pokemon such as Breloom. Taunt can force Suicune and Ferro to possibly waste a turn for you to gain momentum. The only thing Serperior really has to worry about the two above Pokemon is Scald burns (but who doesnt tbh) and Ferrothorn's Gyro Ball.

Some calcs

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Serperior Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 359-426 (101.9 - 121%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Life Orb Serperior Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 40 SpD Suicune: 330-390 (81.6 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 68 SpA / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Discharge/Thunderbolt
- Roost
- Defog
- Heat Wave

Thanks to zapdos' coverage, it can easily get rid of these two. Even a boosted suicune's scald does nothing to zapdos and it just gets 3hkod if not 2hkod by discharge. Even if suicune does get up 2 or 3 boosts, zapdos can still win the 1v1 thanks to roost. Ferrothorn doesn't do anything to zapdos, except leech it for suicune but even then, I'm pretty sure zapdos still wins the 1v1 vs cune.

68 SpA Zapdos Discharge vs. 252 HP / 40 SpD Suicune: 188-224 (46.5 - 55.4%) -- 15.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
68 SpA Zapdos Discharge vs. +1 252 HP / 40 SpD Suicune: 128-152 (31.6 - 37.6%) -- 0.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
68 SpA Zapdos Discharge vs. +2 252 HP / 40 SpD Suicune: 96-114 (23.7 - 28.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
68 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 268-316 (76.1 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Time to post partners. Deadline is on the 16th.
Reserving Chople Berry Tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Chople Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 80 Def / 180 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Ice Beam/filler

First and foremost, Tyranitar can provide Stealth Rocks to complement the spikes Ferro lays down. But speaking to the mon itself, Tyranitar is a great partner to this core because it can deal with Mega Manectric easily, who easily dominates this core thanks to Suicune's lacking of recovery and Ferrothorn falling prey to Flamethrower or Overheat. It additionally provides a reliable answer to the Latwins to help keep Ferro from having to deal with HP Fire shenanigans. Thanks to it holding a Chople Berry, it can also deal with major threats to the core in Thundurus and Mega Charizard Y, even tanking a Nasty Plot boosted Thundy Focus Blast from full.

+2 252 SpA Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 180 SpD Chople Berry Tyranitar in Sand: 286-338(70.9 - 83.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

(I put down a filler slot because the set imported from Smogon has Ice Beam, but since Suicune and Ferrothorn will likely be performing well against Landorus-T anyway, you can customize it to your needs. The only set Ferro would probably struggle with checking is Double Dance, but Tyranitar shouldn't be your stop to that anyway.)

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 92 SpD / 28 Spe
Impish Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Roost
- Return
- Heal Bell

Defensive Dragon Dance Mega Altaria provides mandatory cleric support and a solid Fighting-type resist for the core. It does a solid job of checking Zard Y, Serperior, Breloom, miscellaneous Electric-types, Reuniclus (usually 2HKOs at +1, 90% chance to avoid 2HKO from +2 Psyshock), and actually sets up on status users more generally (except Clefable but Suicune+Ferrothorn beat that). As a secondary setup sweeper, Malt beats up special walls and Dragon/Water/Grass types that Suicune can't.

Meanwhile, Mega Altaria can afford to run mono-Fairy coverage because all of the Fairy resists in OU are solidly checked by one or more of Suicune and Ferrothorn (save Zard Y but Malt sets up on it), and most of them despise Scald burns, Spikes damage, or both. Ferrothorn's Leech Seed will occasionally give Mega Altaria some passive recovery, and Suicune will help a lot with Roost-stalling out particular moves by choiced wallbreakers. Offensive checks like Weavile, Mega Diancie, SD Talonflame, and Choice Scarf users are handled by Suicune and/or Ferrothorn.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 244 HP / 4 Def / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

OR

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 28 SpA / 152 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Protect
- Magma Storm

Utility's EVs hit a leftovers number and ensure that SpD is one point higher than Def on the off-chance you face a P2/PZ with Download. SubToxic's EVs outpace adamant Mega Scizor and prevent Sab's KOff ever breaking your sub, with 0 Atk IVs being really important to stop Foul Play variants having a chance to break your sub. You can move the SpA into SpD if you want or you can just keep it there for the slight boost to Magma Storm. Slower spreads are an option but I personally think that any Tran that loses to adamant Mega Scizor is a travesty.

Heatran makes for a really nice partner regardless of whether you run standard utility or SubToxic for a few reasons. SubToxic partially stacks roles with Suicune in that it can PP stall stuff somewhat if it needs to while also being able to have two 'mons that are capable of toxic stalling with SubTect rather than one. In addition to this, it has really solid defensive synergy with both of these Pokémon, being able to absorb Fire-type moves targetted at Ferrothorn and being able to eliminate Grass-types barring random stuff like Breloom and the more niche Virizion or Tran lures like AV+EQ Tangrowth and SubSeed/HP Ground Serp. Toxic allows it to bait and cripple Seismitoad and Gastrodon too, which stops them being able to give Cune a hard time while still alive (although Cune can PP stall them and win, it can save time/your own PP if you aren't forced to). In exchange, both Suicune and Ferrothorn absorb Water-type moves that give Heatran a headache while Suicune also pressures. Both variants are able to spread Toxic that Suicune can help stall out. All in all it is just a nice partner for this core.

Latias @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psychic
- Healing Wish
- Recover

This core gets smashed by Electrics, Breloom, and Medicham, judging from the threats that were submitted. This makes Latias an excellent partner since it is a damn reliable switch into Electrics while taking on Breloom and Mega Medicham pretty freely. Additionally, Latias provides a healing wish user just in case Suicune gets low on HP, giving it a second chance to sweep the opposing team.

Latias @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Psyshock
- Surf

Mega Latias fits into this core nicely as it can more reliably take on Electric-types such as Thundurus, Zapdos and Mega Manectric. It also provides a Fighting-resist that can defeat Breloom and Mega Lopunny. Calm Mind allows you to have an alternative win condition. Meanwhile, Suicune can beat Scizor and Clefable which Mega Latias hates. Finally, Ice Beam can be used if dealing more damage to Thundurus is deemed important.
