Defining moves: Swords Dance, 50% Recovery

Design concept:
The most important things to me in this stage are, 1) designing around the Defining Moves that facilitate and interact with Diamond Storm the most, 2) executing well on a defined role / reason to be used (this is also related to differentiating ourselves from other Ground-types), and 3) being capable of fulfilling traditional bulky Ground-type duties in the builder and in-game (this is where Libra and Colo suffer).

I chose to account for Swords Dance + 50% recovery because I believe they fulfill 1) and 2) the best, opposed to other great but perhaps less interactive options like Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, and Thunder Wave. Swords Dances solidifies our role as an offensive Ground-type and gives us the breaking power that EQ + non-STAB Dstorm really wants. Recovery is a huge point of differentiation over other Ground-types, synergizes great with SD (good at breaking fat but can struggle vs revenge killers), and also leans into Dstorm's whole "we want to stay on the field" thing.

Offenses:
136 Attack with an Adamant nature and +2 boosting is really, really strong. Specifically, it's just enough to 3HKO Argh without Leftovers, and hits some other really cool sweet spots: Earthquake does 99% max to Tapu Lele, and will never OHKO Dragapult after Stealth Rock (87.3% max). There is also a 99.6% chance to 2HKO Landorus-T after Leftovers at +1. 76 Speed outruns Argh. Part of why I chose this lower Speed was to incentivize HP investment; having good bulk is really important to competing with other Ground-types, so this is a cool benefit of a lower Speed tier.

Defenses:
80 HP is mostly arbitrary, but I didn't want to go too high (in the 90-100s) so that HP investment would be a little more encouraged. 99 SpD Avoids the OHKO from Timid Specs Tapu Lele's Psychic after Stealth Rock. 115 Defense is also pretty arbitrary, and although it's roughly in the range I wanted –– ~15-20 higher than our SpD, enough to take Zera hits, etc –– the reason it's 115 specifically was because that's the maximum within the BSR limit. Normally I don't like just pushing stats until you hit the limit, but I think given all the individual limits are quite tame + not accounting for anything other than SD/Recovery, it feels somewhat fine. Most spreads seem to be prioritizing SpD > Def, especially those accounting for SD and/or recovery, and I really value being able to take on Zera / Shifu after boosts / preserving a (small) defined weakness in lowish SpD, so I suppose this spread stands out a bit in that regard.

Offenses
252+ Atk CAP31 Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 237-279 (84.3 - 99.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Defenses

I realized my spread is very close to some others (especially Korski and Brown4Sides) but I believe my required moves and speed benchmark are enough to distinguish itself.

55 / 117 / 135 / 59 / 100 / 124 (590)
PS:
134.14
SS: 82.33
PT: 107.29
ST: 84.43

PT+ST: 191.72
BSR: 578.96

Optional Moves: Swords Dance, Taunt, Pain Split, Leaf Blade

Objective:

This spread has three goals, which are focused on our switch-ins lists:
  • Provide a reliable counter to Zeraora and Tapu Koko, our main targets in the switch-ins list.
  • Outspeed all relevant birds so we can threaten them without investing in Special Defense.
  • Get as much power as possible within these conditions.
This spread is definitely on the strong side but CAP 31 competes with other colossi like Garchomp and Landorus-T and needs tools to find its niche. Funnily enough, this spread is inferior to them in all ratings (except Lando-T on PT but Intimidate tips the scale) but the speed in particular leverages all other CAP 31 assets.

Moves
Before going any further, I want to mention the moves. This list is relatively narrow because this spread (and especially the speed) may benefit too much from too many options. I want to streamline this build while giving it just enough options so it is not entirely one-dimensional.
Swords Dance is just what we need to overcome fatter threats. This attack is on the low side considering the competition and we need the boost to realistically threaten Landorus-T or the steel birds (who still remain strong checks)
Taunt is everything CAP 31 needs. A protection against status, another way to threaten defensive checks and just a way to force the opponent to directly attack you: which is exactly what we hope thanks to Diamond Storm.
Pain Split is the poor man's Recover but 50% would be hella strong here. Still, Low base HP + Fast is the best spread to take advantage of Pain Split not only as a recovery move but as an offensive one as well. I believe we need at least some kind of recovery to leverage Diamond Storm's boost.
Leaf Blade so yeah, turns out Wood Hammer is a bit too strong with Swords Dance if we want to keep Equilibra as a counter. Thanks to the other moves we have already plenty of options to circumvent our checks so I would rather not have too many options. Leaf Blade is still 20% stronger to EQ-Neutral targets and provides a move to use when we want to keep Diamond Storm's PP.
Notable exclusions: I don't want to give options just so we can have a "gotcha" moment against would-be counters. That's I elected against Fire coverage: it's not realistic with this spread to go mixed and aside of frying Kartana and maybe Ferrothorn, this is useless.
Rapid Spin is a wee-bit concerning with Swords Dance. I don't think it is OP by any means but given how stacked this statline is, I prefer to stay on the safe-side.
50% Recovery is something I considered but between Pain Split and our natural speed, our current options are enough. I think with this bulk, 50% recovery would be a bit obnoxious.

All in all, it gives some flexibility in whether one's want to sweep or provide utility, but the options in each possible way are narrow.

Defense
Starting with the defensive here because our main competitions, Landorus-T and Garchomp are highly-valued for their defensive versatility and how they blank-check many threats.

The best way not to take damage is to kill the opponent before they get an hit on you. This is why this spread's most valued defensive stat is actually speed. 124 is enough to get the jump on a lot of would-be threats, especially Zapdos and Tornadus-T which are my main targets. We outspeed them both and while we absolutely cannot take two Hurricanes in the face, we can comfortably take one and our mere presence in the team force them (and especially Zapdos) to double-guess their moves.
In particular, Tornadus-T cannot KO us with Knock-Off + Hurricane without a boosting item.

It is also a good way to pressure the two other members of our Pressure list: Tapu Lele and Landorus-T: Scarf Tapu Lele cannot switch-in freely on us as we are never OHKOed from full and Spec is easily 2KOed by DS + EQ (or 2 EQ) and defensive Lando-T are pressured by any combination of Taunt, Swords Dance and of course Diamond Storm to either push through it or get momentum.
Lastly, being fast usually means having more opportunity to use Diamond Storm. The best way to leverage Diamond Storm, in my mind, is to have something like Kartana or Urshifu who would usually cut right through us and instead being met with a Diamond Storm boost on the switch and the odds are suddenly not in their favour anymore.

55/135/100, while not stellar is still pretty solid. It is equivalent to 100/94/69 univested and 100/124/91 with full HP investment (I don't believe you ever not run full speed on this). I focused on our Switch-Ins list to set this spread, and especially these two: :zeraora: :tapu-koko:
  • Zeraora cannot ever 2KO us with Close Combat, even with SR and 1 layer of Spikes.
  • Tapu Koko cannot 2KO us with Dazzling Gleam, even with SR.
This allows us to be a reliable counter to these two and come in and out during the game. With some HP investments, CAP 31 can even endure these hits with Lefties knocked off, for example.

Aside from that, this spread is pretty good at taking one hit and the possible +2 boost from DS lets us survive some impressive stuff, most notably Weavile's Triple Axel and Scarf Kartana (and even Band 3/4 of the time) who would love to otherwise force us out. Weavile still outspeeds us because I consider that Diamond Storm is our way to win this match-up.

Offense
Once the speed level was set-up (to outspeed Tornadus-T), I will be honest: I have just pump the Attack as much as possible.
We need power. Every other spreads mention this and mine is not different. While we are on the weaker side (most notably, potentially missing the 2KO on defensive Zapdos with Diamond Storm), our Speed, Taunt and Swords Dance more than make up for that if we want to tackle on fat threats.

Most notably, this has no trouble OHKOing Tapu Koko and Zeraora with EQ, Weavile with Diamond Storm and 2KOing all Toxapex with Earthquake. Tornadus-T cannot switch on us and Zapdos can only do so with Boots intact. We have enough gas to seriously discourage Kartana from coming (+2 EQ is an OHKO with any kind of chip, like 1 layer of Spikes).

Our counters list is pretty safe however. While Ferrothorn is cleanly 2KOed by +2 EQ, Equilibra can only be 2KOed by +2 Leaf Blade with some prior chip and the steel birds have nothing to directly fear before something like +6. Taunt is there to ensure that we are not sitting ducks but comes at the cost of either coverage or durability which is what I am aiming for: a strong spread that can be tailored to beat what you want but can not everything at once (and with some serious counters).

Other potential counters include Arghonaut who can shrug off literally anything short of Banded Leaf Blade (don't try this at home) or Jumbao.

Assumed EV spread: 24 HP / 252 Atk / 220 Spe+
Just enough EV to outspeed Tornadus-T and the leftover provides a bump in bulk. In the future, some might just go 252/252+ to outspeed other CAP 31.

Hey everyone. I had downloaded a fresh copy of the calculator and was going through spreads to check legality when I noticed a few discrepancies regarding limits. In some cases, it looks like users have either recorded the incorrect value of one of their limits or have a typo. In other cases, it appears that some users are using an outdated version of the calculator which can either be off by just a hair or very different depending on the situation. Either way, please double check your values and consider downloading a new copy of the calculator just to ensure your limits are up-to-date. This is not a pressing issue since you are all still within the limits, but this will become problematic if changes are made to ride the limits. I will be pinging users with the specific discrepancies I noticed.

Tommaniacal (all limit values off by a little)
StarFalcon555 (PS, SS, and Combined Tankiness limits are off)
ausma (PS and SS limits are off)
NoahIOTJ (all limit values off)
Zephyri (BSR is off)
Brambane (all limit values off)
Voltage (SS limit is off)
quziel (SS limit is off, looks like it currently accounts for a special attack of 50)
ultramafia (all limits are off by a little)
Full_Korbe (PS and BSR are off, I assume your attack stat was suppose to be 117)

Final Submission
Decided to make a Shift Gear spread because I can:

90 / 120 / 75 / 52 / 125 / 88 (550)
PS: 117.32
SS: 65.86
PT: 83.27
ST: 130.00
BSR: 567.07

Optional Moves:
Shift Gear, 50% Recovery

This spread aims to fill a mainly defensive role for teams while threatening a late-game clean after checks such as Landorus-Therian and Ferrothorn are weakened. 88 base Speed at +2 hits 424 without any EVs and a neutral nature, allowing CAP31 to outspeed Zeraora without investment. This allows CAP31 to run a spread of 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def Adamant, which is what I did damage calculations with.

Special bulk is a major emphasis of this spread; 252 HP CAP31 comfortably avoids 2hkos from Specs Dragapult Shadow Ball, Offensive Zapdos Hurricane, and Offensive Heatran's Magma Storm. As a result, CAP31's physical bulk is somewhat compromised, but it is still enough to avoid a 2hko from Zeraora's Close Combat. It's also enough to eat a considerable number of hits at +2 Defense.

Offensively, 120 Attack was chosen because it guarantees that Earthquake OHKOs Dragapult at +1, as well as hitting a number of other thresholds as well. Diamond Storm 2hkos Defensive Zapdos at +0, and OHKOs Tornadus-T at +1.

So yeah that's it.

252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Groudon: 135-160 (35.1 - 41.6%) -- 80.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Optional Moves: 50% recovery, Dragon Dance, special Fire coverage (Lava Plume!/Overheat), Taunt, Leaf Blade, Rock Polish, Stealth Rock
I am not sure about Stealth Rock. If it is not allowed, mods should feel free to remove this tidbit. Seems like rocks aren't out of the question

Justification:
This spread is designed to allow for versatility as all of the Pokémon CAP 31 competes with can do a lot with what they have. Additionally, Diamond Storm has both great offensive and defensive potential. It would only make sense for a spread/optional moves to highlight this. In an attempt to compete with :Landorus-therian:, :garchomp:, and :colossoil:, we may go overboard since the former two are top tier mons. I feel that my spread avoids this pitfall without overcompensation. All of our competition has exaggerated stats (factoring in :landorus-therian:'s Intimidate) so I thought it appropriate to go in that direction.

Offenses:
Being built around a non-STAB move means CAP 31 will need a high attacking stat. I went with 140 because it is certainly enough at +1 to take out :Tornadus-therian:, deal heavy damage to :Zapdos:, while not 2HKOing standard :Corviknight: at +2. If Leaf Blade is included in the final movepool, our Attack would not be high enough to 2HKO :arghonaut: with it. The Speed was more difficult to settle on. I started out on 93 as you outspeed :tyranitar: without any investment and giving it a greater "speed buffer" for :heatran:. I toyed with the idea of 98-100 speed as you can Diamond Storm in :urshifu:'s face to avoid the 2HKO from Close Combat; however, that would reduce our damage output significantly due to BSR limits and hampers :Jumbao:'s ability to check us. I settled on 80 to preserve power while being faster than :heatran: and outspeeding:zeraora: at +1 (with +Speed nature). The Special Attack is enough to OHKO Kartana with Lava Plume with a -SpA Nature. I'm suggesting it for the potential burn chance. I increased the SpA to 80 to 2HKO PhysDef :Ferrothorn: with Overheat using a -SpA Nature. Admittedly, this can be done at base 76 but I did not want to have weird Ultra Beast style stats.

+1 252 Atk Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tornadus-Therian: 414-488 (114.3 - 134.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 Atk Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Zapdos: 280-330 (73.1 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 172+ Atk Sandshrew Diamond Storm vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 179-211 (44.8 - 52.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery.

0- SpA Hippowdon Overheat over 2 turns vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Ferrothorn: 372-440 (105.6 - 125%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns after Leftovers recovery

0- SpA Hippowdon Overheat vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Kartana: 664-784 (256.3 - 302.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Hippowdon Leaf Blade vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Arghonaut: 170-202 (41 - 48.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0- SpA Hippowdon Lava Plume vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Kartana: 260-308 (100.3 - 118.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO Old Lava Plume calc

Defenses:
I knew that a large HP stat would be to the project's advantage it lets :ferrothorn: fare better against us since it will recover more HP with Leech Seed than a standard HP stat (the equivalent would be about 85/90). There is no justification as to why I submitted 120. After running some calcs for a DD set, we live Adamant CB :rillaboom:'s Grassy Glide at +2 Def without investment if our base Defense is 70 @ 120 base Health. This further incentivizes Diamond Storm use. It also allows CAP 31 to avoid the 2HKO from :Zeraora:'s Close Combat. A base SpD of 80 allows CAP 31 to live two utility :Tornadus-therian: Hurricanes without investment and living three Magma Storms from defensive :Heatran: with max SpDef investment. This is likely how it would be played as handling :tapu koko: and :magnezone: requires investment in SpD in a similar manner to :landorus-therian:, though to a lesser extent due to our giant HP stat and likely 50% recovery move. HP | 113 Attack | 100 Defense | 65 Special Attack | 126 Special Defense | 126 Speed
600 BST
130.52 Physical Sweepiness | 88.21 Special Sweepiness | 92.56 Physical Tankiness | 114.78 Special Tankiness
589.99 BSR

Designed for Earthquake & Diamond Storm, and Pain Split/Taunt/Rocks/Fire Blast/Power Whip
Tankiness ratings are designed so that the mon has good natural special bulk, and not as good physical bulk, so it appreciates the diamond storm boost more. Natural Physical bulk is still decent so it doesn't rely on the diamond storm boost. The tankiness ratings are set at what I think are the appropriate benchmarks. HP is base 70 so uninvested it sits at 281 to make effective use of pain split. Invested it sits at 344, which is still usable with pain split but I wanted to incentivize attack investment over HP investment. Stats are overall high to allow this mon both to take necessary unresisted hits and to allow it to compete offensively with other ground types, standing out with its higher speed tier. Can hold Leftovers/Life Orb

Physical Tankiness is enough that Zeraora won't 2hko with Close Combat
252 Atk Zeraora Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hippowdon: 118-139 (41.9 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Special Tankiness is enough that Zapdos won't 2hko with Hurricane
0 SpA Zapdos Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 118-139 (41.9 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Speed is enough to outspeed weavile, and attack is enough to OHKO weavile with Diamond Storm
252 Atk Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 282-332 (100.3 - 118.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Tapu Koko:
252 SpA Tapu Koko Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 87-103 (30.9 - 36.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 338-402 (120.2 - 143%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Tapu Fini:
252 Atk Hippowdon Power Whip vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Fini: 212-250 (75.4 - 88.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 103-123 (36.6 - 43.7%) -- 99.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Fini: 132-156 (46.9 - 55.5%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO

Will not always win against Scarf Fini, but if it carries Power Whip the matchup is significantly more favorable.

252 Atk Hippowdon Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 192+ Def Tapu Fini: 162-192 (47 - 55.8%) -- 21.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 SpA Tapu Fini Draining Kiss vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 84-100 (29.8 - 35.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 192+ Def Tapu Fini: 102-121 (29.6 - 35.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Will probably always win the matchup againts CM Fini even without Power Whip.

252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon in Psychic Terrain: 235-277 (83.6 - 98.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 187-222 (66.5 - 79%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon in Psychic Terrain: 157-186 (55.8 - 66.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Beats non scarf Variants of Lele by outspeeding, will lose to Scarf Lele by being outsped.

Weavile:
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hippowdon: 186-222 (66.1 - 79%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Shard vs. +2 0 HP / 0 Def Hippowdon: 96-114 (34.1 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Cap will win 1v1, and with a diamond storm boost will be harder to revenge kill

Toxapex:
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 158-188 (51.9 - 61.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Zapdos:
252 Atk Life Orb Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 205-244 (53.5 - 63.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Zapdos: 160-190 (41.7 - 49.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Technically Zapdos can switchin and spam roost if 31 does not carry Life Orb, but it's not going to win. And if 31 carries Taunt/Pain Split it can't PP stall Diamond Storm.

Ferrothorn
0- SpA Hippowdon Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Ferrothorn: 180-212 (51.1 - 60.2%) -- 84.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Hippowdon Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Ferrothorn: 200-236 (56.8 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Def Ferrothorn Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hippowdon: 97-115 (34.5 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 88-105 (25 - 29.8%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Properly Checks CAP31 if it isn't carrying Fire Blast, 31 can carry Fire Blast to muscle past.

Landorus-Therian
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hippowdon: 150-177 (53.3 - 62.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 252 HP / 164+ Def Landorus-Therian: 83-98 (21.7 - 25.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Diamond Storm vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus-Therian: 107-127 (33.5 - 39.8%) -- 30.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

always counters 31

Dragapult
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Draco Meteor over 2 turns vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 326-385 (116 - 137%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragapult: 186-220 (58.6 - 69.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As it should, Dragapult wins 1v1

Thank you all for the quality submissions. Compared to the limits discussion, I had a lot of information to work with which made the slating process much easier. I even used some of the more detailed submissions as a baseline for spreads that offer less of an explanation. I tried to offer a good mix of options that should enable voters to focus on the most defining characteristics of CAP 31. One thing of note is that many of the spreads submitted were very similar in structure and goal to others, so the decision for what made slate often came down to very specific interactions. Lastly, be aware that defining moves are subject to reevaluation so spreads that considered them may not actually obtain them.

Zetalz 70/120/105/65/130/90

While the spread is similar in structure to what Voltage has achieved (more on that later), there are a few elements of this spread that may be more desirable to voters. The first thing of note is the speed tier. Given the consideration of grass-coverage and our ability, the speed tier helps 31 better target bulky water-types such as Tapu Fini and makes this move inclusion a more desirable choice. The slightly better physical tankiness helps ensure a better matchup into Zeraora by avoiding a roll for 2hko. The general focus on bulk and the consideration of Swords Dance also allows for more customizable EV investment.

Dex 110/147/75/60/80/83

The spread shares a similar structure to Excadrill, but the attack and bulk is far more generous. On initial viewing, I was not sold on the bulk the spread had to offer. I was not expecting the damage roles to be very favorable, but the calcs provided indicate otherwise. Recovery should also reinforce the bulk element of the spread if it maintains it. The lack of consideration for setup makes the strong attack stat necessary to stay competitive with the other relevant ground types in the tier. The combination of promising bulk and monstrous attack helps alleviate the responsibility of speed towards 31’s success. It can operate at a lower speed tier than expected while still being threatening.

DetroitLolcat 75/150/120/65/110/65

With both the slowest speed and strongest attack on slate, DLC’s submission is the best 252 Adamant spread to consider. The spread has great bulk with the ability to further invest which will make this a difficult spread to take on. The lack of consideration for setup and 50% recovery was a good call since I am unsure either would make it through the reevaluation of defining moves. Pain Split as a recovery alternative may or may not make it through the reevaluation, so be aware of that when considering this spread. The immediate power this spread offers is hard to pass up though.

Amamama 80/113/122/53/86/126

With max speed and one of the best physical bulks, this spread was considered for slate very early on. With the higher speed tier, 31 is far more threatening to mons like Weavile and Astrolotl. Even with a rather weak special attacking stat, fire coverage seems more reasonable given the ability to outspeed certain Kartana variants. Considering speed paired with potential defensive boosts from Diamond Storm, having a guaranteed “weakness” in special defense will make balancing easier. This spread is also the most likely to see heavy reevaluation in moveset discussion given the lesser attack stat, so there may be more flexibility granted to it compared to all other spreads on slate.

Da Pizza Man 132/135/86/53/66/79

There were many 132 hp spreads to consider this time around and being able to define a unique niche compared to the others was a difficult task. Given the slower speed tier, Dragon Dance was a smart inclusion to set itself apart. Pairing the defensive benchmark versus Landorus-T at +2 def with a base hp that is already trying to encourage substitute seems like a strong combination, especially when you consider that Landorus-T would be used to impede the progress of us setting up Dragon Dance. These are very specific interactions, but I think it works well for what the spread is trying to achieve.

Voltage 132/125/61/55/95/82

Of all the spreads that have a heavy focus on special bulk, Voltage’s does it best. The ability to absorb relevant hits comfortably without investment means we will be able to focus on our offensive capabilities and not be sacrificing for it. While the application for the 101 hp substitutes is niche at best, having additional uses for the 31 is generally a positive. Given the speed tier, recovery will be a necessary tool and make the special bulk element of the spread go much further. Swords Dance also seems like a necessary consideration to better enable our two-move coverage. The mix of traits made this an easy contender for slate.

mark6870 96/127/105/45/82/87

I think this is potentially the strongest Dragon Dance spread. The speed tier can threaten mons like Tapu Fini and Modest Tapu Lele before the boost and proceeds to out speed all desirable targets at +1. The consideration for recovery alongside setup makes an item choice like Life Orb more compelling and further increases the potency of our two-move coverage. Having a weaker special defense on this spread seems like a needed balancing factor but it still manages to have the flexibility to switch into something like Tapu Koko Dazzling Gleam with relative ease.

Darek 90/120/75/52/125/88

Having the only Shift Gear spread is an easy way to be a contender for slate. When +2 speed allows 31 to outpace almost the entire tier, speed stops being overly relevant. The spread has a Necrozma feel to it given the strong mix of bulk and setup. The attack stat is rather tame and I think pairs nicely with what could have potentially been a very volatile move. This is still a difficult spread to gauge how strong it ends up being, but I am comfortable seeing how this preforms and making necessary adjustments in post-play lookback.

I will pass the discussion over to SHSP for final comments.

This has been a fascinating and fun stats stage, and Wulf and I have had many a fruitful conversation about each spread and what they bring to the table. We've got a wide group of subs on the slate, and I'm eager to see what gets decided! It's full steam ahead from me, let's get to polling soon!
