Defensive Poliwrath and

Scarf Shaymin

I've chosen Shaymin among the grass type available because it is actually the only that deals with it consistantly until Leaf Storm misses whatever the nature or the ice coverage Feraligatr uses and it has a better bulk than Rotom-Mow.

When it comes to Poliwrath, it has proven, in my experience in both side of the match up, to be the more reliant option to handle Gatr. Its only real issue is it doesn't fit in that many teams outside of stall.

I could neither vote for myself nor let Lalaya wins all the projects of the week

Time's up!

Let's analyze our submissions and see what we can learn from it
  • Water-Types do very well vs Feraligatr, :rotom-wash: Rotom-Wash, :choice band: :azumarill: Azumarill and :choice band::crawdaunt: Crawdaunt threaten it offensively while Water-Types like :poliwrath: Poliwrath, :milotic: Milotic and theaten to wall it, phasing it out and burning it respectively while threatening a scald burn.
  • Grass-types that outspeed Feraligatr or can take Ice Punch like :choice scarf: :rotom-mow: Rotom-mow, :shaymin: Shaymin and :tangrowth: Tangrowth respectively do very well vs Feraligatr over the course of a game.
  • Feraligatr is one of the many setup sweepers in the tier that finds itself walled by Unaware, whether that's a :quagsire: Quagsire or :clefable: Clefable standing in its path.
Winner(s):

I'd as always would love to thank everyone that participated, seems that we got more submissions this time around!
I'd also like to mention that the submissions have gotten better, which is a great improvement.
I wanna keep it brief, so I'll be announcing our winner this week!

Berunka's Poliwrath won with 4 votes!
We'll be posting our next victim today very soon! Stay tuned and thank you for participating.

Is it just me or is it getting hotter in here...?
A Pokémon notorious for being obnoxiously hard to switch into, sporting stallbreaking capabilities, defensive utility and hazards all in one mon
And also I am pretty sure it's a frog so that's probably its biggest W
This week we've got none other than Heatran!

:bw/heatran:

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Stealth Rock
- Flash Cannon
- Earth Power

How do you personally check this beast? I am a stall lover so the advice would be appreciated!
The submission phase starts now and will last for 5 days! Abide by the rules when submitting as usual. Happy posting!

:ss/quagsire:
Quagsire @ Leftovers
Relaxed Nature
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

The Hp and SpDef investment makes sure it's always 4HKO'd by Earth Power-it's strongest move. Earthquake OHKOs. I chose Quagsire because Gliscor doesn't like to switch in.

Calcs: 252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 80 SpD Quagsire: 124-147 (31.4 - 37.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery, 0 Atk Quagsire Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 360-424 (111.4 - 131.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Gliscor Calcs: 252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 244 HP / 244 SpD Gliscor: 157-186 (44.6 - 52.8%) -- 24.6% chance to 2HKO after Poison Heal and trapping damage, 252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Gliscor: 208-246 (71.4 - 84.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal and trapping damage

Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Slack Off
- Thunder Wave

This is a counter, with literally no Heatran set capable of beating this guy

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 55-66 (13.9 - 16.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery and trapping damage
252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 67-79 (17 - 20.1%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

and in case you still don't know the opponent's set and are worried of a solarbeam:

252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 178-210 (45.2 - 53.4%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

modest calcs:
252+ SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 60-72 (15.2 - 18.3%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery and trapping damage
252+ SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 194-230 (49.3 - 58.5%) -- 66% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Slowking Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 164-194 (50.7 - 60%) -- 84.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

ripbozo heatran doesn't do enough in time even if it was magma taunt

:bw/rotom-wash:
Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Trick
- Nasty Plot

Rotom-Wash is a great counter to Heatran. It resists all of its damaging moves, outspeeds it, and 2HKOs with Hydro Pump. Hydro Pump becomes an OHKO if Stealth Rock is up on Heatran's side.
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Rotom-Wash: 77-91 (31.9 - 37.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after trapping damage
252 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 296-350 (91.6 - 108.3%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 296-350 (91.6 - 108.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

We talked about how to manage Feraligatr last week. Now we can talk about why Feraligatr needs to be managed ! Even though this offensive set does more damage to Feraligatr than a defensive set, Heatran is powerless against Feraligatr without Power Herb+Solar Beam technology.

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Feraligatr: 128-151 (41.1 - 48.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Feraligatr: 106-126 (34 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after trapping damage

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 115-136 (36.9 - 43.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 96-113 (30.8 - 36.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after trapping damage

252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 398-468 (123.2 - 144.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Heatran becomes just a setup fodder for the gatr to eat for breakfast. However, Flame Body can be a significant obstacle, so I would only consider Feraligatr as a check on Heatran. Still, even a burned gatr can be scary.

my vote goes to :rotom-wash:

Quag: I won't make the point of dying to Solarbeam because all except mine do, but that is such a weird spread that i think Azu and Fera just steamroll through you if you're not max def

Rotom: arguably the most used of the entire bunch although its only a soft check

Fera: I personally wouldnt let this chipped to risk a burn if I can help it

Time's up!

Let's analyze our submissions and see what we can learn from it
  • Water-types do very well vs Heatran, in conjunction with recovery like with Slowking, you can even threaten to hard wall it. Offensive pressure after being forced out like that from Feraligatr or Scarf Rotom-W help a lot with checking Heatran too.
Winner(s):

I'd as always would love to thank everyone that participated. Unfortunately, we got a lot less submissions, maybe this was due to Heatran being tough to check? I thought there were a lot of options but I'll try something easier next time.
Anyway, our winner is

Breloom @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Notoriously obnoxious yet very lovable, Breloom has proven itself as a crucial part of the BDSP metagame. This is especially true after Gengar's ban which erased one of its best checks. So we ask, how do you check this Pokémon?

Azumarill @ Leftovers
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Scald
- Play Rough

Choice Banded/Belly Drum Azumarill is known to be a very threatening offensive force in this format. However, Sap Sipper Azumarill proves to be a successful check to Breloom. Sap Sipper invalidates Spore and any Grass move used by Breloom, while its Fairy-typing resists any Fighting moves. This allows it to switch into Breloom, and threaten to 2HKO with Play Rough or cripple Breloom with burns from Scald. Rest enables Azumarill to last an entire match, and it can sit in front of Breloom while asleep for two turns because Breloom can't do anything back. Even at +4, Breloom's Mach Punch is always a 3HKO. This set also performs well against the Substitute + Focus Punch set used by Breloom, because you can out stall Substitute and heal with Rest. The only Breloom set that can perform decently against Sap Sipper Azumarill is Substitute + Facade.

+4 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Azumarill: 174-205 (43 - 50.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Breloom Focus Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Azumarill: 111-132 (27.4 - 32.6%) -- 70.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Also, this thing isn't completely useless outside of Breloom. It has amazing defensive typing and good bulk. It can switch into Tyranitar, Crawdaunt, Dragonite, Garchomp, Infernape, Mamoswine, Scizor, Shaymin, Feraligatr, and Weavile as a defensive tool.

I give all credit for this set to the user 'The Goomy', who is currently 37th on ladder using this set: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/ignorance-is-“not-blissey”-tricky-sticky-stall-teams-peak-5-1792-elo.3697901/

Tangrowth is outstanding at checking Breloom, Being immune to spore and eating up Mach Punch is pretty huge, as Breloom has nothing to really threaten Tangrowth. (breloom does not learn sludge bomb idc whoever made a post on sludge bomb loom you are so lame omfg skill issue)

Xatu reisists both stab of Breloom and is immune to Spore thanks to Magic Bounce. Only thing that can threat Xatu is Rock Tomb / Rock Slide but I've never seen one in the meta. 56 speed to outspeed Adamant Breloom and KO with psychic .

Here's a mon I haven't used in a while but it works as a good status absorber. I remember someone mentioning it on the metadiscussion thread, so a little credit to them.

:ss/heracross:
Heracross @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly/Adamant
-Close Combat
-Facade
-Megahorn
-Swords Dance/Substitute/Sleep Talk
There are two ways to deal with Spore, Flame Orb-induced status, or Sleep Talk: the former requires a bit of setup, the latter is less powerful than the other options available but easier to use specifically in the status absorber role. In practice, Breloom offers Heracross a way to KO Breloom, or a potential switch, since Heracross is always faster than Breloom.

252 Atk Guts Heracross Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 343-405 (131.4 - 155.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Guts Heracross Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 378-445 (144.8 - 170.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Guts Heracross Facade (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 267-315 (102.2 - 120.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Guts Heracross Facade (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 294-346 (112.6 - 132.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Guts Heracross Megahorn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 343-405 (131.4 - 155.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Guts Heracross Megahorn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 378-445 (144.8 - 170.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 88-105 (29.2 - 34.8%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO after burn damage
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 175-208 (58.1 - 69.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and burn damage

252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 110-130 (36.5 - 43.1%) -- approx. 3HKO after burn damage
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 165-195 (54.8 - 64.7%) -- approx. 2HKO after burn damage
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (4 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 220-260 (73 - 86.3%) -- approx. 2HKO after burn damage

Bullet Seed is awful to calc as crits can interfere.
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (4 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 220-260 (73 - 86.3%) -- approx. 2HKO after Stealth Rock and burn damage
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (5 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heracross: 275-325 (91.3 - 107.9%) -- approx. 25% chance to OHKO

All this makes Heracross a good check that prevents Breloom from using Spore. It has some opportunities to switch against Breloom while also being a good way to revenge kill an established Breloom after Swords Dance. And look how happy it is !
