Other Ask the Mods

Status
Not open for further replies.
I was asked whether we'd be doing this thread for the end of the generation or not, here's your answer. Anyway, the basic premise of this thread is to (obviously) ask the OU moderators (almost) anything you want. Whether it be about Pokemon in general, or if you just want to get to know the moderators better, it's fine to ask here.

However, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
  • Do not ask why a Pokemon wasn't suspect tested, or why a Pokemon isn't a certain rank on the viability rankings.
  • Do not get too personal with your questions.
  • We obviously don't mind any memes, but don't let it get out of hand.
This thread will be open for about a week.

Regarding the new mechanics - I believe it'll be interesting to figure out the best way to use the new Dynamax mechanic. At its core it's pretty simple but it'll definitely be fun to play around with how to optimally time it and how you can get the most use out of the new moves.

Regarding Dexit - I honestly don't really know how I feel about it. The fact that they're cutting out Pokemon is something a lot of people don't agree with but I believe that it makes perfect sense given the size of the games if all Pokemon were to be included. Their justification wasn't a particularly satisfying one, though. The general power of OU will probably drop next generation but that isn't a necessarily good or bad thing so I really don't have any thoughts on it.

Any underrated movies/TV shows/animes/books/other media to share?
I don't think that anything I read or watch is particularly underrated but you should definitely read and/or watch Dr. Stone. If you enjoy football, I'd recommend the new Inazuma Eleven season; Inazuma Eleven: Orion no Kokuin.

  • fams, what y'all like to listen to? favorite songs, artists, or albums?
Some of my favorite artists:
  • A$AP Rocky
  • Lil Uzi Vert
  • Travis Scott
  • Denzel Curry
  • Leafs
  • Bokoesam
  • Aminé
Some of my favorite songs:
Some of my favorite albums:
  • later in the generation, many people r thinking sm is stale or too matchup dependant. thoughts on these claims?
I don't agree that it's stale; people often tend to confuse stale with stable. This generation of OU definitely has its elements of matchup issues, but I think it tends to be overstated.

  • overall, how is moderating such a big forum like ou like? y'all ever get burnt out? i know i would!
It can be pretty exhausting at times, but I like dedicating myself to this community so I haven't been burned out at all.

Favorite Pokémon (in general)?
My favorite Pokemon in general are probably Archen and Archeops. Competitively, I like :blobpex: a lot.

Favorite team of the generation? Current favorite?
I don't really attach myself to teams, but this team is probably my favorite to use right now, despite its weaknesses and shaky matchups.

most underrated?
While it sees respectable usage in tours, I think that Slowbro is often significantly underrated.

How did you guys come up with your names?
Jordy is my name in real life. Yes, it's Jordy and not Jordan.

Who is the biggest weeb?
Probably me or TPP, but I think that we all know it's Leo deep down.

Is it obvious?
Is it?

Please may each of you recommend me a song or an album?
Please may each of you recommend me a series or a film?
Please may each of you recommend me a book?
For album I'd recommend TESTING by A$AP Rocky.
I don't watch a lot of series or films, but I've been enjoying Stranger Things recently, so I guess I'm recommending that.
I haven't read a real book in a while so I'll just recommend you Dr. Stone instead.

What is your favourite ingame team from any game?
My favorite in-game team is probably the one from my most recent BW playthrough: Serperior / Gurdurr / Excadrill / Victini / Archeops / Jellicent. Serperior truly is garbage, though.

What is your favourite Pokemon game?
I liked Pokemon X and Y a lot, although it had a lot of wasted potential. My favorite Pokemon game is probably Black 2 or Platinum.

What is your favourite non-Pokemon game?
It's definitely Dead by Daylight, which is an online horror game with a wide array of different killer characters to play against as a team of 4. The basic objective of the game is to repair 5 generator in order to power the gates to escape while being chased by a killer. I could go on about it for forever but if you'd like to read more about it you can just look it up.

What are some of your favorite wallbreaking cores to use on a team and why?
Right now some of my favorites are Kyurem-B + Tapu Fini and Kartana + Excadrill. Kyurem-B is one of the best Gliscor abusers in the game right now and a lot of Clefable aren't running enough bulk investment for it. On top of that, thanks to Tapu Fini's Misty Terrain, it can abuse Toxapex without having to fear a burn, making it truly lethal for balance and bulky offense builds to deal with. I'm a big fan of sand in general and Kartana + Excadrill sand is probably one of my favorite variants right now. Kartana is capable of heavily weakening many of Excadrill's checks such as Celesteela and Zapdos, often giving Excadrill a much easier time to clean up in the late-game.

Do you consider a mega evolution mandatory on every team? If so, why? If not, what are the advantages of not having a mega on your team?
There's no reasons to see Mega Evolutions as anything but just other Pokemon competitively, so the fact that they're Mega Evolutions shouldn't impact how important they are to have. The advantage of not having a Mega Evolution on your team is that you could perhaps cover Pokemon better defensively or offensively; there's really not much to it.

What are(is) your favorite team archetype(s) to use and why? What about your least favorite team archetype?
My favorite archetype is balance because I like using strong defensive backbones while maintaining an offensive presence. I don't really have a least favorite archetype; I'll play around with anything if I feel like it.

Have you ever used Mega Charizard Y? If so, what were your experiences using it and would you recommend others to use this pokemon? If not, why haven't you used it?

For Jordy , as you’ve been a huge presence in both CAP and OU, which tier do you prefer/have you preferred throughout the generation?
Through my time playing both CAP and OU, I've always preferred OU.

Have you ever used Mega Charizard Y? If so, what were your experiences using it and would you recommend others to use this pokemon? If not, why haven't you used it?
I liked using Mega Charizard Y for a bit last year around the early rounds of WCoP because people were using a ton of Gastrodon instead of Toxapex for a short amount of time, which made Mega Charizard Y particularly threatening. However, I wouldn't recommend Mega Charizard Y in today's metagame. While it can work in Fire spam cores with Pokemon like Heatran and Victini, it still requires pretty extensive support in order to deal with Mega Latias and Toxapex properly, and you'll often have to resort to lures such as Groundium Z Weavile in order to do that. The fact that you're 6-0ed by Heatran due to Mega Charizard Y doesn't help either.

Yes. People who hate pineapple pizza are just shitty contrarians.
With SwSh massively changing the landscape of the meta, what are you thinking of the new mechanics, as well as stuff like the Dex cut affecting OU? Also post thoughts on the Dex cut in general.
Not a fan of the Dynamax mechanic - I think it emphasizes the issue with Z Moves greater because every move is a Z Move for 3 turns. I'd be lying if I said I look forward to it.

Dex cut doesn't bother me too much. Something to consider with the dex cut - it's difficult to not only create new Pokemon and keep the other ones in the region in some capacity that's created, but it's also difficult to balance everything with them. Sure, you have your usual shitmons like Maractus, but I'm hoping that by cutting down on the dex they solve issues that I personally have such as the major BST differences between some Pokemon and helping to push Pokemon that were borderline good (like Nidoking) a bit more into the scene with a BST boost. We'll see how things develop over the next few months.
For those of you who’ve played earlier iterations of OU (dp/rs/bw), what is your favorite? Easiest/hardest to get into?
I love spectating GSC. I think when you spectate it live and neither opponent is bringing some headass Baton Pass it's intense.

I've played DPP on up. I haven't touched a lot of ADV nor RBY OU, but my thoughts on ADV was I liked Ubers a bit better with it. Otherwise, I think DPP is easy to get into once you understand some of the mechanics with it (Explosion being stronger, lead matchups, knowing a bit more what could be on a team, etc), but the problem is it's arguably one of the worst metas to play IMO because of how much variance the meta actually has. I've grown to like BW more over time - I think weather was a good thing to keep in spite of others saying they weren't a fan of it, and I think some of the recent things the BW Council has done was for the better.
If there’s one thing on Smogon/PS you’d want to implement, what would it be? (Friends lists don’t count!)
Removal of the current chat system and finding a way to integrate with Discord instead.

I know such a request is probably unlikely, but low key I detest Showdown's chat system and I think if Discord chat replaced it I would be more inclined to log in.
Any underrated movies/TV shows/animes/books/other media to share?
We of the OU Moderating team are against anything with anime whatsoever and request those who do watch it to stop. That said I have spoken to one JoycapJosh and he has recommended everyone interact with Sword Art Online. I do not recommend this.

At the request of one of my friends I've been watching Sunny in Philidelphia. While it kind of teeters perhaps into pissing off PC people, I think there are some funny moments. I think it's due to Danny DeVito and actual music from Rick Astley being used in the show though.
u guys like to practice any sports in ur free time?
Bullying you is a sport and part of my free time. ;/
later in the generation, many people r thinking sm is stale or too matchup dependant. thoughts on these claims?
I think there's some merit to matchup dependent, but I don't think SM is too stale. I feel there's a lot of variety in teams and, while some things do repeat and re-occur, we've seen evolution within the metagames in multiple ways. Think back all the way to first SM, now current, and look at someone like Kartana for example. We've seen it being a gimmick choice during Metagross-era, more usable after Pheromosa ban, Swords Dance picking up steam prior to USUM, then we have Choice sets thanks to Knock Off tutor, and finally we have Z Move Kartana that's used for utility purposes. I don't really think it's too stale at the moment, but I can at least understand where people think there's some matchup dependencies.
overall, how is moderating such a big forum like ou like? y'all ever get burnt out? i know i would!
It's not bad. I think one thing that helps is the collaborative effort from the remaining teammates. I think that's what makes moderating important - knowing that you as an individual have specific limits, and using all of your collective strengths to your advantage. Burnout is very real - mostly it's caused by real life, tilt, or just stress from other individuals. Still, I think the group handles it well and we all get along and care for each other.

Except Leo. Fucker steals diamonds.

But we still love him.
ass or tits
Tits but let's spin this in a different method:

Would you prefer a PB&J, Peanut Butter Sandwich, or a Jelly Sandwich?

To me both compliment each other in their own unique way. The real answer, however, is and always will be eyebrows. The thiccer the better.
Would you rather fight a horse-sized duck or a hundred duck-sized horses?
Duck-sized horses are just Shetland Ponies.
Favorite Pokémon (in general)?
Tyranitar. It's a Pokemon that has a lot of things going against it, but in spite of its drawbacks it's a Pokemon that has shaped a lot of metagames or has been a significant contributor to it. Also love Gyarados.

In-game, Nidoking.
Favorite team of the generation? Current favorite?
While the user in question is banned, I really enjoyed the Hyper Offense team made by Shaka during Dugtrio or MMeta tests (don't remember which). I liked it a lot because, while it was purely a hyper offensive team, it had a lot of interesting things for its time. One example is Focus Sash Hoopa-U - where Magician can be a huge contributor to screwing over a Pokemon such as (at the time) Scarf Garchomp. It also was a team that used Sash Excadrill and (IIRC) Sash Greninja, which were metagame staples for specific team compositions for a while.

I'd say the iconic SPL Stall from this generation was a low key favorite too. In a way, the team was an interesting puzzle box because there were solutions for it (Alolan Marowak could overcome it, but Pursuit Dugtrio could stop it), and it was probably the team that helped prove how powerful Arena Trap was for the time.
Who is the person you respect the most on Smogon?
There are definitely a lot of people I like and respect, but (while it's a cop out and he certainly has his flaws), I have to say it's one Finchinator . That isn't to say some people champion such things better, but Finch has always been the one person who I've seen help countless people in various tiers and just a huge help around Smogon. Dude has a big heart - maybe to his detriment sometimes.

That said, I've interacted with many people outside of the OU community and more into, I guess one could say, cliques and I have people I highly respect over the years. So I assure you - Finch isn't the only person.

How did you guys come up with your names?
Good question. Originally, years ago, I used to have a lot of fun with Megaman Battle Network. If you didn't know, I tried submitting folders for the time for BN6. Eventually, I got some of my folders recognized in the Alphabatized "Renowned" folders, in particular with the N Code. While some like J, S, and a few others like F were very strong codes, N was unique. It had NeoVariableSword, NumberBall, and (perhaps my favorite) Airplanes! The name was stupid I admit, but cmon I was probably like 16 or so at the time and couldn't think of anything else.

Long story short - I really liked Colonel from the series so it stuck to me.
Best mons game
I think I have a soft spot for the GSC series, and was really a huge fan of HGSS. I think they were remade perfectly and appealed to me in various ways. BW2 is a runner up.
Worst mons game
Maybe ORAS? I think ORAS's main storyline was okay - Archie and Maxie were cool, but the lack of the Emerald Battle Frontier was a huge blow to the game.
Who is the biggest weeb?
Leo. He recommended me to watch Sword Art Online too.
Meanest user?
Probably me. Actually, that's not really a contest other than maybe Finch. GMars tries but he's a softie.
Do you think that more Pokemon should have been suspect tested in OU?
I speak outside of Mods and Council, but personally I think it would have been better to have some more suspect tests in OU. I think the problem was when certain Pokemon seemed to get out of hand, they settled down in the dust again and didn't become problems until later.
What is your favourite ingame team from any game?
GSC - Nidoran Male Spearow Totodile Mareep. Probably can do without one of these, but these 4 usually handle just about anything thrown at them. HGSS can have Gyarados in here somewhere if you want and Spearow can be replaced with something else (Kenya is really good though).
What is your favourite non-Pokemon game?
Age of Empires II, Fire Emblem
How do you become a mod?
For C&C I think aldaron and co. were just super drunk one night and thought I could ruin an entire forum in a short timespan.

For OU I think it was due to some knowledge at the time with things and having a hand with C&C helped.

As far as others becoming a mod? First, try not to be too pushy on things. One problem I always see with people is that they try to shove themselves in to become a mod. It's best to get integrated with the community, get involved with the Pokemon scene in various ways, try to avoid falling for what I like to call "pitfalls" (okay I kind of stole that from Mekkah), and just work hard. I think Leo and GMars (Jordy too) are great examples of people who've worked very hard and we weren't exactly on friend terms per se (I think Leo hates me).
What are some of your favorite wallbreaking cores to use on a team and why?
When it was relevant, I really loved Mega Garchomp. I think it's an example of a really cool wallbreaker with potential utility with Stealth Rock. Mega Garchomp seeing usage in USUM was really great to see. I know that's not really a core, but a specific Pokemon is still nice to mention.[/quote]

I liked Zard Y a lot more during Dugtrio's reign of terror in USUM. With Duggy Zard Y was such a massive dick to a lot of teams, and Lati@s wasn't the hardest to get by at the time either. Now? Nah, it's not the worst, but hard to justify it IMO.

Mushrooms are my favorite topping on pizza, but I personally like pineapple too.

Dex cut will be interesting because we don't know what we'll have to work with, but I think in Gen 7 there was a strong power creep to where matchup is more impacting than it should be, and the number of accepted weaknesses for most teams is higher than what people would normally be fine with.

I actually really like Gen 1 and Gen 3 OU. I'm still learning Gen 3, but I've spent over a year playing Gen 1 and while it's probably the most hated gen of OU, I find it fun. In Gen 1, most teams are identical except for 1-2 slots and move choices. While you can technically freeze and crit your way to victory, things like no leftovers means each turn matters a lot more. There is no passive recovery, so any damage you take is permanent until you use a turn to softboiled/recover. Gen 3 is a little similar in that regard with sand being permanent and a huge part of the metagame. Leftovers being cancelled out means that some damage can be permanent to mons without recovery moves. For example, if your Gengar loses 20% and is at 80%, it will never go higher than that even if you have leftovers because of sand. I would say Gen 1 is technically the easiest to get into because there's not a lot of teambuilding or unique interactions to learn as there are in other generations. However, this doesn't mean it's actually easy, as with any gen/tier you learn, you need to be playing well to win. Simply knowing the mons and mechanics won't cut it, but if you're great at playmaking, then you might get off to a fast start.

I mentioned this in the RMT thread, but if I can holiday mode back, that'd be great. I'm not even kidding when I say I got a headache the first 2 days it was gone LOL.

TV show wise, I think Chuck (starring Zachary Levi) was fantastic. I've watched a ton of anime and I really shouldn't ramble on because this post is gonna end up longer than it should, but I'll just name a few I really liked that aren't super popular. Haikyuu, Saiki Kusuo, Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice), Free!, Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, and Black Clover. Black Clover is technically popular, but it gets A LOT of hate because of production and animation issues. It starts out really slow, but each arc is better than the previous one and so far it's been able to keep doing that even until now (it's still airing). I think I actually like the main character more because he not only has a tough background, but because a lot of viewers hate him too lol. He yells a lot at the start, but I think it's worth sticking with in the long run.

Thanks for the questions :)
Best / worst gen of OU?

Thoughts on Z-moves and Mega Evolution in competitive Pokémon?

Was USUM OU Memetagame Discussion really a mistake?
I think the best or most loved gens would be Gen 2 and Gen 3. Most hated would be Gen 1 for sure. Although, I think SM easily deserves worst gen because matchup is way too dominating by itself. This might sound dumb, but I think any team can be a good team given the right matchup. On paper some teams might look like garbage, but if you get a favorable matchup, then you'll probably be fine. It's harder to make great consistent teams because the number of mons you will be weak to is higher than it should be. It should take more than an auto-win matchup with the broken moth for you to win a game.

Personally I love mega evolution. Z moves keep the metagame interesting and I love creativity so I'd say I like them.

It was a tragedy for sure.

I think I actually listen to anything that's not rock or metal. I play basketball, run, and swim. I'd marry GMars, fuck Finch and kill myself. I used Scarf Krookodile the same number of times as I've used Scarf Talonflame, and I can say with confidence that Scarf Talonflame is way more fun, probably because it's not a smart thing to use. I don't really have an opinion on it since I never use it. I mentioned this earlier but I think it's heavily matchup dependent. Wcop and Snake have been fun although a bit stressful at times. Stress would probably come from barely missing playoffs in wcop and being last place in snake. I'm having a great time meeting and working with new people, a lot of which I've respected for a very long time including bro fist and McMeghan. I hope snake isn't my last time to work with either or them, or anyone else on my team. I'll admit I got burned out of modding RMT forum once because I locked 114 teams in 3 months and tried expanding my brain to come up with ways to fix the 999 problems we've always had that no one else bothered to try and fix. Luckily it's been getting better and maybe my brain did expand after lol. OU forum has been extremely fun for me and I think it's mainly in part to my fellow OU moderators being fun people I love working with.

Favorite Pokémon (in general)?

Favorite team of the generation? Current favorite?

Who do you think is the best USM OU player right now?

Who is the person you respect the most on Smogon?
Duck sized horse. matching socks. Lucario is my favorite mon. I don't think I've ever had a favorite team for this generation yet. If I can make Lucario work in OU then maybe I'll have one. Best SM OU player atm is a little hard to say for sure. I'll list some of the people I think could be classified as top 5: bro fist, lax, ben gay, ABR and Empo. bro fist has been super consistent for a long time. After seeing lax play in SPL and wcop, I feel like he's a great playmaker. Ben gay is crazy with building/matchup and I feel like he is someone that is extremely hard to take down without insanely good matchups. ABR and Empo have both been dominating for as long as I've been here (mainly Gen 6 and Gen 7) and they continue to make solid plays every time I see them. I'm hoping their OLT series this week turns out to be one to remember in a good way. Person I respect the most would probably be Finchinator. I can't say I respect his diet, but his work ethic, active personality and non serious/funny nature makes me really appreciate him. The last part means that there's always room for jokes, which means I can work hard while having fun, and is probably the main reason I love being on the OU mod team.

most overrated fuck in the meta rn?

most underrated?

personal fave of the entire gen?
Most overrated mon would probably be Lando/Heatran. They're both great for sure, but I feel like they are the most dangerous when using offensive sets utilizing z moves, and because Scarf and Specially defensive variants respectively are a lot more common, they feel a bit overrated at times.

Most underrated I'll say is Buzzwole because it has a good move pool and it hits very hard.

Favorite mon in OU is a bit hard, but I'll go with Greninja. It feels very satisfying to lure switch ins like Tapu Fini with Protean Greninja, and getting the Ash-Greninja transformation is always a pleasure as well.

Team Pokepals is the default username for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky. I later changed to TPP because it was easier for others to refer to me that way. Pokemon Mystery dungeon games Red/Blue, Explorers and Super Mystery Dungeon are the best games for sure. I've never played it, but the Gen 5 mystery dungeon, Gates to Infinity is the one I'm gonna put down as the worst one. It had limited pokemon and I think it was smaller and might not have bad boss battles. Leo is the biggest weeb on this planet. Meanest user is a hard one so I'll leave it unanswered for now.

The Violet Evergarden OST: Automemories. Chuck (starring Zachary Levi) is a great TV show. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Considering how Magearna went from broken to alright in the span of a few months, I'm tempted to say no. I still thing some things could be banned to help reduce the burden teambuilders have while trying to avoid being 6-0'd by nonsense like Volcarona. Favorite in game team was probably in DPP where I had starter + Staraptor + Luxray + Lucario + idk. Explorers of Sky is my favorite game. Smash bros is my favorite non-Pokemon game. You tryhard while being a good person and be decent at the game to get mod.
What are some of your favorite wallbreaking cores to use on a team and why?
Do you consider a mega evolution mandatory on every team? If so, why? If not, what are the advantages of not having a mega on your team?
What are(is) your favorite team archetype(s) to use and why? What about your least favorite team archetype?
I would say some form of type spam, like rain, would be my favorite wallbreaking cores. It's effective to weaken similar checks when the opponent is pretty much forced into the same mon for both of your threats. I like mega evolution because you get a knock off absorber. Items are usually huge, especially leftovers, and knock off is an extremely good and helpful move that can easily make the difference in a lot of games. Favorite archetype would probably be offense, least favorite might be semistall/stall because it takes a lot longer to make progress in order to win. Knock Off + hazards + status + PP stall can go a long way and make things easy, but dual regenerator can force some games to go over 300+ turns easily and it's just boring to watch and even more boring to play imo. I still think they're good playstyles, but not something I'd prefer using frequently.
whose the shittiest user u met
who would u ban
who do u hate on this site
I'm a very friendly and open person so the number of people I dislike is near zero. However, things that do rub me the wrong way would include when people choose to be disrespectful to others willingly and insult or even bully others for no reason. It's even worse when it's done publicly and goes unpunished, which I think is fairly common in general. I treat everyone with respect no matter what and love supporting others in any way I can, and the last thing I would want to do would be the cause of someone's pain. Criticism and harsh words are sometimes fine, but don't let it get too far. We're all human and therefore we should work together and help each other to create a brighter future for everyone.
Have you ever used Mega Charizard Y? If so, what were your experiences using it and would you recommend others to use this pokemon? If not, why haven't you used it?
I have used it a few number of times. I used a Toxapex lure with it because it seriously sucks being walled so easily by something so common. Toxapex and Mega Latias being common are the reasons I don't use Zard-Y often. Volcarona also gives it competition and that mon can potentially sweep with 1-2 quiver dances, so I'd rather do that than get 1-2 kills.
What gens you like most from least favorite to favorite.
What hobbies do you guys have outside this game? Any other games you play?
Do you like school?
2, 5, 4, 7, 6, 1, 3 are my least favorite to favorite. I play Clash Royale, PUBG mobile, and Smash Ultimate. Hobbies include running, basketball, swimming and watching anime. School can sometimes be annoying, but I think it's a good thing overall and is good in giving you something to do everyday and keep you active.
