as a big US politics head i was wondering if we could change the topic to one of the following, ideally with less manic posting. sometimes you guys write like thesaurus' are going out of style and i gotta tell you that's not really how the real world works.

anyway, some current event topics:

- george santos's incredible gift for lying
- the massive 1.7T omnibus bill passing and the additional 44B for Ukraine
- the lack of any monetary policy being passed for americans as we are gearing up for a full recession
- american copaganda and fentanyl

the whole cops and fentanyl thing is insane not only because it appears the entire american police force has managed to convince themselves a tiny flake of fentanyl coming into contact with their skin results in an overdose that requires immediate administration of naloxone, but that local and national media will take these stories of, for example "hero cop saves life of other cop--Fentanyl wants to kill your family" and publish them without a second thought.

frankly i dont think this is particularly shocking about the cops, but its insanely embarrassing how this just gets passed along at face value to the rest of the population. To ignore any and all of the following questions that might arise when you notice something might not add up: "So skin contact, as opposed to say, an injection, resulted in an overdose?" "The police officer did not experience a euphoric high before overdose, but instead immediately began hyperventilating and collapsed on the floor?" "So drug dealers are selling this to people even though it more or less kills people immediately, as opposed to just getting them addicted to something less immediately harmful that would allow for repeat business and additional profits?"

There are plenty of other examples of cops lying and the media basically just plagiarizing the cops in their publications. For me though this sticks out as one of those cool things that make me feel like im turning into the joker every time i read or think about it

(for folks who might not be familiar, here's a good article on this: https://defector.com/the-myth-of-cops-overdosing-from-touching-fentanyl-persists-for-a-reason/)

the cop thing is fake (surprise) but isn't the fent part real? synthetic opioid ODs are up both historically but also accelerating in modern times ("increased by over 56% from 2019 to 2020 and accounted for over 82% of all opioid-involved deaths in 2020"). don't know if you meant it was only the cops WITH fentanyl part that was insane but the line in the middle about drug dealers selling it seems to suggest you think the fentanyl part is also false (keeping in mind the CDC says "the source of the fentanyl is more likely to be illicitly manufactured than pharmaceutical" so its not doctors going trigger happy with the prescriptions either)

to be completely honest im not sure what youre saying exactly. my post was not intended to suggest fentanyl is harmless. im talking about how there is a torrent of misinformation about fentanyl being published that comes from police not understanding how fentanyl works, and media outlets being unwilling to think critically about how accurate the information they receive from police is--only that.

this line specifically. answer is apparently they are; opioid deaths are up, synthetics (like fent) are driving most of it, and data (from what looks to be mostly law enforcement admittedly) seems to indicate that its illegally manufactured fentanyl rather than the pharmaceutical stuff. it just wasnt clear from your post whether you meant it was the copaganda that was fake or both the copaganda and the increasing prevalence of fent thats fake, though now thats cleared up

Okay this sub forum has become quiet, which means the leftists have stopped infighting and once again entered the annual winter hibernation. Righties don't exist in this bubble and anyone who tried to claim being a moderate becomes the hilarious victim of Godwin's Law. I've also drank a lot of New Years Shuckle Berry Juice if you know what I mean. So let's reanimate this long dead leftist circle jerk. Elon Musk. Old Musky. Elon Tusk. Mankind's least favorite living human, but one who has objectively pushed humanity in a better direction.

He has pretty much single-handedly convinced every major automobile manufacturer that ICE vehicles aren't the basket to throw your eggs into. Even if Lithium runs dry Sodium is a valid(ish) replacement and one way or another, Tesla got us here a decade sooner than we would have otherwise. My next car will probably be an electric Chevy Express and I feasibly can buy it before 2025 thanks to Musk.

Space X is the leader in commercial space flight. Reusable rockets are revolutionary especially at a time when NASA has retired the Space Shuttle and Russia is having a fit over western reactions to... well, you know.

Speaking of "you know" Starlink is keeping Ukraine connected to the outside world despite Russia's best efforts. It's offering a reasonable alternative to wire based internet access on a global scale. While price isn't affordable for everyone it's still offering options where there once were none.

Neuralink, which might have the world record for most monkeys killed for science, is pushing humanity forward in ways we can't even comprehend (due to lack of monkey killing robots in our brains).

The Boring Company is a public transport specialist that specializes in, well, holes. By getting highways underground traffic can be reduced, public space increased, and a reduction in vehicle congestion.

Hyperloop. Basically everything I said above but with a tiny chance of explosive decompression. Also faster, probably.

Open AI is a thing. Maybe it will become a thing. Maybe not.

Musk released rap tracks titled "RIP Harambe" and "Don't Doubt Ur Vibe". This is dumb, but so is posting politics in a Pokemon forum yet here we are.

Ol' Musky voted for Hillary in 2016 and endorsed Yang in 2020 but voted for Biden.

Musk also supported carbon taxes to discourage emissions.

Elon considers climate change humanity's greatest threat, after AI.

He bought Twitter, which has created oh so many hilarious memes.

Oh boy but despite all this Elon has managed to fuck it all up. The guy should be every lefty's best friend but he's such a fucking douchebag that he ruined it all. He's praised China, stated his support for the Republicans in the future (what he actually does is yet to be seen), opposed left leaning reactions to COVID, opposed the COVID vaccine (he got it anyway), called a bunch of rescuers pedophiles, criticized public transportation (despite the Boring Company), claimed Dr Fauci is a criminal, and managed to become such a universal celebrity bogeyman that he could fart in public and somehow it would make the front page of Reddit.

To me it blows my mind that this guy exists. He should, on paper, be a leftist hero. But he also has made so many shitty statements and actions that the left hates him. The right of course is just the contrary left, and loves him. This guy and his existence is like bizzaro world. Watching Republicans defend a guy in favor of clean energy, public transportation, space travel etc is peak irony.

Humanity's most hated savior, Elon Musk.

You're no fun. I can't think of any better time to post in a Pokémon forum's Politics thread than when sufficiently inebriated. Are you guys all just rawdogging this thread sober?

If people don't want to talk about Elon Musk we can go back to how the Republicans are literally Nazis and any right leaning / moderate view is objectively malicious. That was productive.

i am the complete opposite of a stickler and love sarcasm/irony in even the most inappropriate times but talking about how Elon should be every leftists best friend when he's a literal billionaire is wild. i read the second half of your post which i get was the "but" part yet it still kinda fell apart when you're bringing up stuff like the boring company and hyperloop. the former is a complete money sink that'll inevitably go bankrupt despite their invention of claustrophobic tunnels and the latter is probably a front for money laundering.

also Musk believing in climate issues is supposed to make me happy? nearly every billionaire is supportive of these sorts of things in one way or another. climate change is a massive market and they're all capitalists. whether they truly care or believe in climate change is irrelevant so long as they get to joy ride to space or whatever billionaires do in their free time.

if you want to stan a billionaire at least pick someone like Gates or MacKenzie Scott. both have done more for humanity than Elon has and at least the latter gives you girl boss energy that'll get you laid in Seattle.

If you thought my post about Elon was positive I apologize, maybe I should have called him a douchebag a few more times than I already did.

Regardless of the success of his investments the majority of the big ones, Space X, Tesla, Starlink etc have objectively improved the planet. Not only have these things directly made the world better they've shown commercial viability for them, leading to competition. So even you hate Musk, his actions mean you can get an electric car now without buying a Tesla. His other investments have a common theme of "clean tech" which even if some are dead ends they're still usually net positive if they succeed and if they don't the research and development usually finds its way into other projects.

What makes all this weird is that Elon Musk could have easily been pretty much universally loved by the left. But he's such a raging douchebag (see, I said it again!) that he's alienated the left and even paradoxically found support by the right almost exclusively because they support anything anti-left. If Musk just shut the fuck up he'd probably get the same kind of approval as Bill Gates or Steve Jobs but instead he kind of just keeps saying stupid shit until inevitably the media turns against him and he reaches a point where he can leave the toilet seat up and it will make the front page of /r/worldnews.

In case I haven't said it enough, he's a douchebag douchebag douchebag. Douchebag. But a lot of the stuff he invested in are the future, and until he started putting money into those things no one else was putting serious money in them. So now electric cars, private space flight, and global satellite internet are proven to be commercially viable. So that's pretty good.

I think electric cars would be better if they had their own lanes so they could reach high velocities. You could even stack multiples in one line to accomodate various passengers. Maybe make their lines span the entire country. Has anyone ever thought of this
Wow, I think this train of thought has a lot of potential! We'd just need to figure out something to call it...

enjoying watching Kevin McCarthy fail to get elected speaker in the first round for the first time since 1923

just failed on the second round again, and sounds like he'll fail on the third round as well.

100% correct the US public transportation network is total ass and needs an overhaul.

But China / Europe despite their robust public transportation system still use cars and they're even more invested than the US in electric technologies. There's also applications for battery advancements in renewable power such as windmills or solar. Old E-car batteries can be repurposed for solar panels on houses. Then there's e-bikes, e-scooters etc. that give people cheap options in cities.

I know your post was a joke and all but the possibilities electric cars bring are enormous regardless of how good a nation's public transportation sector is. It's something every nation should be embracing because a shift to a green future isn't really possible otherwise.

On paper electric cars are cool and a great replacement, but the issue here is why they're being pitched and the order these things are being prioritized. Elon has been crazy about electric cars because it's been a way to impede construction of better public transportation, not because of any interest in clean energy. His cars are also known to be poorly made and the manufacture process isn't even that clean as a result.

The reason why we should focus on public transport and country-wide train lines in any country is that those are much more efficient and safe in combating the car centric societies we live in. Yknow how when you learn something, the first 80% are much easier to learn than the rest of the 20%, which require more specific studying? Trains are there to resolve the 80%, and after we got that sorted we can focus on more specific solutions like electric cars to resolve the 20% left

Imagine being such an enlightened centrist that you think an openly conservative billionaire scam artist who busts unions, treats his workers like serfs, and got his head start from blood emeralds is a friend to leftism. Please explain that one to me in some more detail. Maybe the problem is that you're not a leftist? That's not gatekeeping by the way; the gate is wide open, you just need to like... actually support some kind of leftist policy to get there.

Yeah, US public transportation in a country where recent railroad strikes fail to secure serious benefits for workers, mainstream media acts as corporate America's proxy in justifying union busting, and the simple fact that too many Americans can't image a world without a car for travel. Delightful.

Since it pisses me off, I'll add a piece on the decreasing size of parking spaces.
Average parking spots in the US are 7.5 to 8 feet wide, down from 9 to 10 feet a few decades ago when we drove supposed "land yachts." Here's the problem: We're driving land yachts again. A 2017 Range Rover is 78 inches wide, just 0.6 inches narrower than the 1965 Lincoln Continental that a well-heeled person might have driven in a previous life.

Parking space dimensions are typically governed by local codes, but that may only apply to spaces on public lots and streets. Mall and garage owners can often cram as many spots into a given paved space as a straight face will allow them and let you worry about the dings and keyings.

Every time I'm stuck between a huge SUV and a dude in a Ford pickup that can't park, I'm risking in all in the awful state of New Jersey. Please save me.
