Hey everyone, it seems DLC 1 has had very little effect on AG, so this will continue as usual

Lunala takes the victory, congrats BaconEatinAssassin!
Moving on:
:sm/eternatus:
Eternatus @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dynamax Cannon
- Flamethrower
- Meteor Beam
- Recover

Perhaps the only noteworthy change that came with Isle of Armor, Meteor Beam allows Eternatus to situationally punish Ho-Oh for pivoting into it even harder than Sludge Bomb does, and win the 1v1 against Tyranitar and Diancie. This makes checking Eternatus more awkward than it already was, so let's see what we can come up with this time.

Necrozma-Dusk-Mane @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Prism Armor
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sunsteel Strike
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

This is pretty straightforward. Dm switches into dmax cannon or comes in on a sack, then DDs while living a flamethrower, then OHKOs with EQ and has a reasonable chance to just sweep. Even if etern has gotten an mbeam boost, flamethrower still doesn't kill. Submitting as a check.

+3 252 Atk Necrozma-Dusk-Mane Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eternatus: 650-766 (154.3 - 181.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Eternatus Flamethrower vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Prism Armor Necrozma-Dusk-Mane: 148-175 (44 - 52%) -- 13.7% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Eternatus Dynamax Cannon vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Necrozma-Dusk-Mane: 82-97 (24.4 - 28.8%) -- 99.5% chance to 4HKO
+1 252 SpA Eternatus Flamethrower vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Prism Armor Necrozma-Dusk-Mane: 222-262 (66 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Even if the etern user decides not to click flamethrower, they can't beat Dusk Mane, and their etern gets ohkoed or 2hkoed anyway.
+1 252 Atk Necrozma-Dusk-Mane Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eternatus: 392-462 (93.1 - 109.7%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

Xerneas @ Power Herb
Ability: Fairy Aura
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Geomancy
- Moonblast
- Thunder
- Hidden Power Fire

By forgoing Sludge Bomb, Eternatus forfeits its ability to actually threaten Xerneas, allowing it to setup a Geomancy with ease. In addition, because this set lacks Power Herb, even the +1 Special Attack from Meteor Beam, as shown in the calc below.

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Meteor Beam vs. +2 0 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas: 140-166 (35.6 - 42.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

reserving mega Mewtwo - y

Mewtwo-Mega-Y @ Mewtwonite Y
Ability: Insomnia
EVs: 40 Def / 216 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psystrike
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast
- Nasty Plot/Recover

Mewtwo can use Eternatus as set up fodder and then kill it or just OHKO it with Psystrike. It can also switch in and live any hit and then OHKO.
Ice Beam and Fire Blast is the usual coverage and Recover is pretty self-explanatory.

216 SpA Mewtwo-Mega-Y Psystrike vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eternatus: 452-534 (107.3 - 126.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Dynamax Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mewtwo-Mega-Y: 199-234 (56.3 - 66.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mewtwo-Mega-Y: 118-140 (33.4 - 39.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Meteor Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mewtwo-Mega-Y: 235-278 (66.5 - 78.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Submitting as a COUNTER.

Chansey
can easily switch into eternatus. Also Meteor beam is a 2 turn move once it usages it power herb.Chansey can easily confide it and then just thunder wave it and spam seismic toss either killing it or forcing to switch out while lowering its sp attack.Plus chansey checks most of the sp attacks. It walls them easily. Also tbh eternatus power herb wont make it op as ditto check its to easily.Even if it kills one mon. When ditto comes in.It is either forced to switch out or it dies to transformed ditto.Overhype imo.

Submitting Ditto as a check.
Ditto @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Limber
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Transform
252 SpA Eternatus Dynamax Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eternatus: 372-438 (88.3 - 104%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
The key factor here that makes Ditto useful against this Eternatus variant is it discourages Meteor Beam usage (once the Ditto player knows the set). If Eternatus charges Meteor Beam as Ditto switches in (bold play, but with Dynamax Cannon's limited PP and Ditto's ability to switch into its coverage fine, not too unlikely), then it essentially has trapped itself. In combination with a defensive check Eternatus needs Meteor Beam to beat (such as the aformentioned Ho-Oh, Diancie etc), this leaves the Eternatus player in a very tricky position.

Problem: this etern is timid.
252 SpA Eternatus Dynamax Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eternatus: 372-438 (88.3 - 104%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
Problem 2: this etern won't take LO recoil.
Solution 1: Rocks are your friends
252 SpA Eternatus Dynamax Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eternatus: 372-438 (88.3 - 104%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
Solution 2: Yes it will, this is not a Power Herb set.

- Psychic

252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Meteor Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 143-169 (36.2 - 42.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Clefable: 108-127 (27.4 - 32.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
Eternatus Dynamax Cannon vs. Clefable: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever

As you can see, Eternatus can do little more than tickle Clefable now that it has dropped Sludge Bomb. Clefable can take advantage of this by being allowed to easily use Calm Mind several times, and then use Psychic to blow past Eternatus.

4 SpA Life Orb Clefable Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eternatus: 169-200 (40.1 - 47.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 4 SpA Life Orb Clefable Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eternatus: 252-299 (59.8 - 71%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 4 SpA Life Orb Clefable Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eternatus: 338-398 (80.2 - 94.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Even if Eternatus is at +1 already, Zacian-C can still sometimes survive.

To all those who think this is weird, a couple of things:
  • Meteor Beam gives the +1 SpA even if Ho-Oh uses Protect, letting +1 Dynamax Cannon force it out. (I asked Guardsweeper about this.)
  • This is AG, the same tier in which the best defensive mon runs Rest but not Sleep Talk. Eternatus can very easily generate a free turn to charge its move, and Recover combined with Eternatus's nutty bulk and its poison immunity means that it is hard to punish it for doing so.
  • Eternatus needs the added power Life Orb or a Z-move gives to break certain checks. Running Power Herb makes too vulnerable to being phased (at least, I assume this is the reason why, Guardsweeper can clarify if I'm wrong).

err reserving empoleon, if unviable mons can be nominated

Submitting Empoleon as a counter:

:ss/empoleon:
Empoleon @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock / Defog
- Roar
- Scald
- Protect / Defog

Penguin resists both Rock and Dragon while is not weak to Fire. It has a surprisingly decent special bulk so it can tank whatever Eternatus throws at it. It gets free Rocks or Defog as Eternatus gets forced out. Roar forces boosted Eternatus out which could potentially break through, and forces hazards damage from rocks. Scald is just a spammable STAB while Protect gives free Leftovers recovery or Penguin is prone to being worn down.

252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Empoleon: 99-117 (26.6 - 31.4%) -- 19.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Meteor Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Empoleon: 99-116 (26.6 - 31.1%) -- 11.6% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Eternatus could boost its SpA with Meteor Beam and attempt to KO with 2 Flamethrowers

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Eternatus Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Empoleon: 148-175 (39.7 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

But Penguin can just switch in on the boost and phaze as Eternatus uses Meteor Beam.

Power Herb is not worth it on Eternatus for several reasons. Perhaps most importantly, offensive Eternatus variants without Life Orb miss out on a great deal of innate pressure, such as 2HKO's on Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM. Power Herb at best allows you to take out Ho-Oh, a Pokemon Eternatus abuses already, Power Herb or no Power Herb. Even if Eternatus pulls off the Ho-Oh KO, chances are it will be forced out the next turn by the likes of Zacian-C, Arceus-Ground, or Primal Groudon, after which it loses its SpA boost and is rendered itemless. This makes such a set considerably less dangerous and flexible than a Life Orb set, and thus a gimmick at best.
