Forum Rules
  • Before posting a new thread, please ask for moderator approval first. Mods reserve the right to close any thread that is not approved. Additionally, use the search feature to help you find existing topics. Do not make duplicate threads.
  • Do not post your in-game team here, or ask for help to improve your team. The Rate My Team section is the place to do this, which can be found here.
  • All posts should be based on actual in-game information. Please do not post speculation or your suggestions for fantasy Pokémon.
  • No discussion of ROMs is allowed. However, discussion based on importing the game is entirely allowed and welcome.
  • Please refrain from theorymoning moves that you think a Pokémon should or should not get. Stick with what is confirmed please.
  • Do not create threads just to ask a question. Likewise, don't make posts just to ask simple questions. Simple game play related questions, that do not promote any form of discussion, go in the Resources (WIP) thread. Be sure to read the first post before asking or answering questions.
  • DO NOT make posts asking or inviting discussion about Pokémon you have bred / traded / trained in cartridge. We are here to discuss strategy - we don't care what IVs you got on your Chatot. Please take these types of topics to the WiFi forum.
  • Non-competitive topics should be posted in Orange Islands. Orange Islands is the in-game subforum for discussion related to in-game aspects of Pokémon SV. Whereas the 1v1 subforum houses discussion related to competitive play, Orange Islands houses threads created for the sole purpose of aiding you in your play through of Pokémon SV.
General Posting Guidelines
- Don't double post. There's an edit button for a reason. If you need to delete one of your posts, the delete button is an option after selecting edit.

- Make the effort for your posts to be grammatically correct and coherent. We understand that not everyone speaks English as their first language, and we're willing to give some leeway here, but if English is your first language you really have no excuse to be making incoherent posts. Bad formatting not only makes your posts unpleasant to read, but they also lessen the positive impact of the points you're trying to make.

- Avoid excessive quoting. It's obnoxious, especially when you quote three paragraphs to answer with a one-liner. Please don't do that.

- Don't reply to a quote by putting bold text inside the quote box. This is exceedingly difficult to properly respond to. If you feel the need to break up a quote, you can do so by editing the quote tags.

- Do not insult or flame other users. Correcting users when they say something that's clearly wrong is fine. Calling them a (BAN ME PLEASE) or saying they are stupid/retarded is an automatic 2 point infraction, no exceptions for anyone, badged users included.

A Guide to the 1v1 Subforum Topics

Metagame Discussion

Viability Rankings
  • A topic where the community, lead by a council, attempts to rank every "viable" Pokémon in 1v1. Excellent resource for getting a feel for how the various 1v1 Pokémon fit into the metagame.
Metagame Discussion
  • A thread dedicated to discussing all aspects of the current metagame.
Resources (WIP)
  • A place to ask simple questions that do not require a thread of their own to answer. This is the only place where so called "one liners" are tolerated.
Tournament Discussion
Resources

Sample Teams
  • A thread where sample teams are collected and posted to help newer users get acclimated to the metagame.
  • Please note that this will not be up until we feel the metagame has developed sufficiently.
Sets Compendium
  • A thread that provides a visual list of viable Pokémon sets submitted by anyone for the SV 1v1 metagame.
Speed Tiers
  • A listing of the speed of every common set used in 1v1. Resource that you want to familiarize yourself with if you are newer to 1v1, as Speed Tiers are extremely important.
1v1 Old Gens
  • A resource for listing supported previous generations of 1v1, their respective resources, and discussion around each of the different formats.
1v1 Team/Set Dump
  • A thread for posting teams or sets that you make and want to share.
  • This is a more informal thread so fun ladder sets are allowed. Not everything posted has to be meant for the highest levels of play.
Other Places to related to 1v1
  • RMT Forum - Forum where users can post their teams to get advice, or to give others advice on their teams. Just read the rules before posting a RMT!
  • 1v1 C&C Forum - Forum where analyses for the onsite dex are written. Check the reservation thread before posting a thread.
  • 1v1 Room on Pokémon Showdown - Real time discussion on the 1v1 metagame. Clicking this link leads to the simulator, where the ladder and teambuilder also are.

Suspect Discussion Etiquette
Please familiarize yourself with the information in the hide tags below before posting in discussion threads.
- Firstly, if you make a checks or counters argument, the very first thing you need to do is make sure you have the correct terminology. A check, is something that can beat common sets of a given Pokemon, but can still lose to alternative sets or the change of a move. A counter is something that can almost always beat a given Pokemon, regardless of sets, so long as the correct plays are always made.

- Secondly, just because something lacks counters / checks does NOT mean it is instantly broken. Charizard, Gyarados, and Dragonite all forced picks and mindgames at preview, but that does not instantly make them broken. However, if something DOES have checks and counters, this doesn't make it NOT broken either. Tapu Koko had counters, Kyurem-Black had counters (specific to its set) and so on. Ideally, when discussing checks and counters of a given Pokemon, the checks and counters should at least be somewhat viable, as opposed to something not even on the VR, lest it just makes the Pokemon you're trying to defend look even more unhealthy, if you're legitimately suggesting people use awful Pokemon for the express purpose of beating a single threat.

- Thirdly, just because you beat something while you have an Elo rating of 1000 does not mean it's not broken. If you want to use battle statistics in your argument, look at the top tier battles, the VR posters, the Tourney scene, and use really good examples. It's much harder to refuse your points if you are a highly respected battler, usually because it means people trust and respect your opinion, regardless as to which way you vote. The lower you are on the ladder, the less any Pokemon will be used successfully and intelligently, so please bear that in mind.

- Fourthly, if you use arguments along the lines of saying "Darmanitan-Galar is bad, I KO it with CC all the time lol", or other similar one-liners, your post will be deleted, and you will be infracted if you continue further, or even infracted on the spot if the post is bad enough. We know the type chart; put some substance behind your posts or just don't bother wasting our time.

- Fifthly, Fact Check. There is nothing sadder than posting a sweeping statement that's incorrect. For instance, it's a common misconception that fighting types beat steel types in SM 1v1, as most steels had either a secondary typing that turned the tables or an ability like Sturdy that let them live a hit and clean KO right back. Everyone has access to the damage calc. Use it, lest you make yourself look like a fool.

- Sixth, be careful of the "Prediction argument". It goes both ways. This should be especially clear for the team preview-heavy metagame we find ourselves playing. It's easy to assume that Trick + Choice beat ImprisonForm Mew, while neglecting the fact that Mew can just raw Transform and proceed to KO you.

- Seventh, make sure your post actually brings some sort of discussion to it. Posts that just say what a mon has and calls it good while providing no reasoning to back it are just a waste of time. I'm not asking you to make a novel, but please make sure your post has a depth of reasoning and quality behind it. If you cannot be bothered putting thought into it, then quite frankly, we cannot be bothered reading it. In general, the better your arguments are (detail, reasoning etc), the better of the overall quality of your post, and the better chance you have of influencing people to see things your way. Therefore, if you feel strongly about a particular suspect or Pokemon in general, it is in your interest to make your post as well reasoned as possible, because if you half-ass it, then you are convincing no one.

- Eighth, don't discuss past or future tiering. Complaining about a past ban from years ago doesn't fix the past, likewise, you can never really accurately assess what the future will be like without any kind of results. This also includes arguments along the lines of "well Mimikyu's gonna be broken with Mew gone"; decisions do not hinge on individual interactions between Pokemon, but rather the entire culmination of their presence in the metagame, of which the former can only ever be a small part of the latter.

The current 1v1 TD team alongside the 1v1 TLs have decided to promote Vertigo to 1v1 TD. Vertigo is a newer face to the community but his knowledge to tournament policy, hosting, and planning is more than enough for this position. Additionally, Vertigo has shown that he has the technical skills with his sheet hosting and scheduling bot making him a great fit to the team and creating more tools to bring all the hype to our tournaments. Circuit planning and tournament formats and policies isn't an easy task so we believe that adding more experienced people in that field to our team will allow us to develop circuit making it more enjoyable for you the community.

As agreed internally with the TLs, we will be removing the tournament council as we believe it has ran its course. Thank you for your previous contributions.

Meloetta, Cinderace, and Necrozma are quickbanned! (8/1/24)

Also I'm going to keep this short but I'm stepping down from 1v1 TL, council, and all that. It's been fun and I'm glad to have been given the opportunity, but I don't have the time or passion needed to be what this tier needs anymore.

I considered doing shoutouts but honestly there's way too many people so thank you to those who have helped along the way, you know who you are.

Itchy will be in charge please behave for them and be kind to one another. That's all I've got really
